A pourable mold mixture made from 100% silicone caulk, paint thinner and cornstarch has been reported, but it is an individual experiment—not a standardized or validated recipe. A 2010 Make: article records approximate ratios and cure times from one reader. Because caulk formulations and solvents differ, the result may vary in strength, cure, shrinkage and safety. For dependable molds, use a purpose-made pourable silicone selected for the part’s geometry, production scale and casting material.
What the reported caulk method uses
The method comes from a reader experiment published by Make: on November 4, 2010. It does not identify a universal caulk formulation, test standard or repeatable performance specification.

Reported mixture for a mold
- Combine silicone caulk and paint thinner at approximately a 4:1 caulk-to-paint-thinner ratio.
- Add about one tablespoon of cornstarch.
- The reader reported roughly 5–10 minutes of working time and about 45 minutes to set.
Those proportions and times are the reader’s observations, not guaranteed results. “100% silicone” on a caulk tube describes the sealant’s advertised base, not a standardized mold-rubber formulation.
Reported thinner casting mixture
For a thinner mixture, the same report described silicone-to-thinner ratios ranging from 3:4 to 1:2, followed by about half a tablespoon of cornstarch. The reader said this thickened the mixture and suggested reducing the cornstarch to about one-quarter tablespoon for a more pourable result, with a longer set time. These are approximate, reader-generated observations; they should not be treated as measured viscosity, pot-life or cure specifications.

Why the result can change from one batch to another
Caulk formulations are not interchangeable
Different products can contain different additives, cure systems and solvent packages even when their labels use similar wording. The cited experiment does not establish that its ratios work with every clear or white silicone caulk.
Solvent can affect strength, cure and shrinkage
A secondary reference on caulk molds warns that the solvent selected and the amount used may affect material strength, cure time and shrinkage. Treat that warning as general background, not as product-specific safety or performance documentation. Paint thinner is a broad product category, so its composition must be confirmed from the container label and safety data sheet (SDS).

Cure behavior is difficult to predict
Working time and set time depend on the exact materials, layer thickness, temperature, humidity, ventilation and mixing. A surface that feels firm does not prove that the entire mold has reached its intended properties.

Safety and suitability checks before mixing
- Read the labels and SDS for the exact caulk, thinner and cornstarch before opening or combining them.
- Follow the manufacturer’s requirements for ventilation, protective equipment, storage and disposal. Do not infer solvent safety from the 2010 craft report.
- Keep the mixture away from ignition sources when the solvent documentation identifies flammability hazards.
- Make a small test batch first, using a disposable container and a simple test master, rather than committing a detailed original.
- Do not assume the resulting material is food-safe, skin-safe, toy-safe or compatible with a particular resin, plaster, wax or other casting material. The cited sources do not establish those uses.
When a purpose-made pourable silicone is the better choice
Formlabs describes silicone molding as pouring a castable silicone around a master. Its guidance says the choice should account for the target geometry, undercuts and holes, production scale and the material that will be cast. Smooth-On’s document catalog lists purpose-made pourable silicone products, starter kits, technical information and silicone-thinner documentation. Those products are a documented category, but no product is automatically suitable for every project.

| Project consideration | What it means for the choice |
|---|---|
| Fine detail, holes and undercuts | Plan how the rubber will flow, capture detail and demold without tearing; complex geometry may justify a formulated mold silicone and a planned parting design. |
| One-off mold | An improvised experiment may be considered only after a small compatibility test and a review of the exact materials’ documentation. |
| Repeated production | Reproducible properties and published technical data are generally more important than the low-cost appeal of an unvalidated mixture. |
| Casting material | Check the mold product’s instructions for compatibility with the resin, plaster, wax, concrete or other material being poured. |
| Material properties | Use the selected product’s technical data rather than assuming a caulk mixture has the tear strength, flexibility, cure profile or dimensional stability of formulated mold rubber. |
Release agents and silicone-to-silicone work
Smooth-On’s guidance states: “Silicone-to-silicone applications such as making two-part molds or casting silicone into silicone are possible, but require a release agent.” For silicone contacting silicone, choose a release method from the product’s technical bulletin and SDS, then test the complete material combination on a small sample. Do not generalize that requirement to every master material without checking the chosen product’s instructions.
A practical decision path
- Identify the master and casting material. Record whether the mold will contact resin, plaster, wax, concrete or another compound.
- Assess geometry. Note undercuts, holes, deep pockets, thin walls and the intended parting line.
- Decide the production scale. A single simple mold has different demands from repeated casting.
- Check documentation. Read the exact caulk, solvent, purpose-made silicone and casting-material labels, technical bulletins and SDS documents.
- Test compatibility. Make a small coupon or simple duplicate before molding an irreplaceable pattern.
- Use release where required. In particular, follow the manufacturer’s release guidance for silicone-to-silicone contact.
- Evaluate the cured sample. Look for incomplete cure, tackiness, cracking, excessive softness, distortion or visible shrinkage before proceeding.
What the acetone question does—and does not—show
A Reddit discussion titled “Clear Silicone Caulk and Acetone Molds?” demonstrates that makers ask about acetone in this context. The discussion is not evidence that acetone is effective, safe or compatible with a particular caulk. Use only combinations supported by the exact product documentation and a controlled test.

Bottom line for a pourable DIY mold
The caulk-based pourable method is worth understanding as a documented experiment: approximately 4:1 caulk to paint thinner with about one tablespoon of cornstarch for the reported mold mixture, and thinner ratios of 3:4 to 1:2 with about half a tablespoon of cornstarch—or roughly one-quarter tablespoon for greater flow. Those figures belong to one reader’s 2010 report. They are not a universal formula, safety assessment or guarantee of mold performance. If detail, undercuts, repeatability or a known casting material matters, select a purpose-made pourable silicone and follow its technical documentation.
