Its “more openings than closures” framing describes that week’s mix of news—not a like-for-like count: it combines new experiences and booking availability with temporary interruptions, refurbishments, and permanent closures.
What opened or became newly available that week?
The weekly roundup highlighted four positive developments: EPCOT Food & Wine Festival booths, a pop-up restaurant format at the Diamond Horseshoe, bookings for Lakeshore Lodge, and a new Disney Springs store. These developments are not all the same kind of opening: a festival booth or store is a guest-facing venue, while a booking window makes it possible to reserve a future stay.

The roundup is about Walt Disney World and reports the October 9–16, 2026 window. It does not establish a company-wide tally of openings versus closures, and the two sides of the headline are not directly comparable.

The statuses below are those reported in the weekly roundup. Dates described as expected or inferred are not confirmed reopening announcements; construction and operating information can change.
#1 Best Overall
Magic Kingdom
- Walt Disney World Railroad: temporarily closed, with October 30, 2026 reported as the expected reopening date. When it returns, the train is expected to run on a shortened route because the Frontierland station is closed during work associated with Villains Land and Piston Peak.
- Carousel of Progress: closed for refurbishment, with a return anticipated in 2027. The roundup gives no firm reopening date.
- Rivers of America, Liberty Square Riverboat, and Tom Sawyer Island: permanently closed since July 7, 2025, to make way for Piston Peak. The roundup reports no opening date for Piston Peak.
Hollywood Studios
- Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo: closed in June 2025.
- Muppets Courtyard: walled off for construction of Monstropolis.
- Mama Melrose’s: closed since May 2025.
Disney’s concept for Monstropolis includes planned dining at Harryhausen’s and Archie’s Square Pig Pizza. Those are future offerings, not currently open restaurants. The roundup relays Disney’s description of a city guests can explore, with its residents and cuisine, as the project’s intended experience.
EPCOT
- Coral Reef Restaurant: undergoing refurbishment. The roundup points to November 4, 2026, as a likely return based on its booking calendar; that date is an inference, not a Disney-confirmed reopening announcement.
- La Signature and parts of the Germany Pavilion: reported under refurbishment.
Animal Kingdom
DinoLand, U.S.A. closed February 2, 2026, to make way for Tropical Americas, also referred to as Pueblo Esperanza. Work includes a planned Indiana Jones attraction. The roundup does not give an opening date for the new land.
Resorts
The roundup also reports temporary closures and refurbishment work affecting Port Orleans–French Quarter, All-Star Sports, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Coronado Springs, Grand Floridian, Bay Lake Tower, and Saratoga Springs. These are localized or amenity-specific impacts in some cases; they should not be read as whole-resort closures. The reported items include a mix of current interruptions and forecast dates.

How to interpret the “more openings” headline
The roundup’s headline is a snapshot of the kinds of news reported that week, not a measure of how much construction or disruption guests will experience. A new store, a festival booth, and the start of bookings are different from reopening a major attraction. Likewise, a temporary refurbishment is not equivalent to a permanent closure, and a construction wall does not itself establish when a project will open.
- Newly open or available: a venue or experience has opened, or bookings have become available.
- Temporary closure: an attraction, restaurant, or amenity is unavailable for a limited period, sometimes with only an estimated return date.
- Permanent closure: the former experience has ended, often to clear space for a replacement project.
- Construction underway: work is visible, but the roundup may not establish an opening date.
Other Disney projects are separate from this Walt Disney World update
Disney’s official Walt Disney World press room lists several 2026 openings or refreshed experiences beyond the October 9–16 roundup: The Magic of Disney Animation, stated to open September 14; Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, described as refreshed and open; Soarin’ Across America; updated Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff figures in Frozen Ever After; and Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, described as open. These listings provide wider 2026 context, but they are not all news from the roundup’s reporting week. Disney Experiences press room
Construction stories at other resorts should not be mistaken for Walt Disney World status updates:
- Disneyland Resort in California: its official construction page describes expansion work, a reopened walkway between Avengers Campus and Cars Land, a Grand Californian Club-Level Concierge lounge in progress and slated for 2026, and eastern Esplanade work that can affect movement through the main entrance. Disneyland Resort experience updates
- Disneyland Resort projects: Disney says a Coco attraction is under construction, Tomorrowland is being reimagined, and an Avatar destination planned for part of Hollywood Backlot is in early development, with construction timing still to be announced. Disney also described a future parking and transportation hub with approximately 6,000 spaces and multi-year arrival-area construction slated to begin in fall 2026. - Disneyland Paris: Disney Adventure World and World of Frozen opened March 29, 2026, with Adventure Way, Raiponce Tangled Spin, Adventure Bay, and Disney Cascade of Lights. Disney’s earlier announcement described a €2 billion investment plan and 14 new dining locations; those figures refer to the Paris expansion, not Walt Disney World. Disneyland Paris News

Reopening estimates can move, and some projects have no announced date.
