What the DEWALT 108-piece mechanics set is
DWMT73801 is the model number for DEWALT’s 108-piece mechanics set. The manufacturer’s U.S. product name identifies two drive sizes—1/4 inch and 3/8 inch—so the kit is intended for hand-tool work that uses those square-drive standards. It is not a powered tool, and the piece count does not mean 108 sockets; the total includes ratchets, sockets, extensions, adapters, bits, keys and storage components.
DEWALT describes the kit as having two pear-head ratchets and an assortment of sockets, extensions and adapters. Its U.S. product copy also highlights a quick-release 72-tooth ratchet, DirectTorque technology, a polished chrome-vanadium finish, a removable accessory case and a vinyl-grip bit driver. Those are manufacturer-stated features, not results from independent testing.

DEWALT’s promotional line says, “With the 108 piece mechanics tool set, you can be sure you have the right tool for the job.” That is advertising language. Whether this kit covers a particular repair depends on the fastener sizes, access and specialty tools that repair requires.
What is included
Two drive sizes and two ratchets
The kit is organized around 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch drives. The smaller drive is generally used with smaller sockets and fasteners, while the larger drive accommodates the kit’s larger sockets and applications. The set includes two pear-head ratchets. DEWALT’s U.S. page specifically calls out a quick-release, 72-tooth ratchet; check the regional package description if you need to confirm which ratchet carries each listed feature.
A quick-release mechanism is intended to let you remove a socket without pulling against the drive, while the 72-tooth specification describes the ratchet’s tooth count. Tooth count alone does not establish torque capacity, durability or performance under a particular load, so do not treat it as an independent strength rating.

1/4-inch six-point sockets listed in the U.S.
The U.S. product page lists these 1/4-inch-drive, six-point sockets:
- SAE: 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 9/32, 5/16, 11/32 and 3/8 inch.
- Metric: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 mm.
Six-point sockets contact the six flats of a compatible hex fastener. Match the socket size exactly before applying force; a loose fit can round a fastener and make removal harder.
Additional contents identified by DEWALT’s Canadian listing
DEWALT’s Canadian product page provides a broader contents description than the U.S. summary. In addition to the ratchets and sockets, it identifies deep sockets, hex keys, bits and both drive sizes, along with extensions and adapters. The sources reviewed do not provide a complete size-by-size inventory for every deep socket, bit or key, so the regional contents panel or the label inside the case is the authoritative way to verify an individual piece.

The vinyl-grip bit driver is useful when the job calls for screwdriver-style bits rather than a socket. Extensions move the socket farther from the ratchet to reach recessed fasteners; adapters allow compatible accessories to be used across the two drive standards. Neither accessory changes the size of the fastener, and an adapter should not be used to exceed the drive or accessory’s rated application.

The 108-piece and 72-tooth figures are specifications published by DEWALT. No independent performance study or hands-on test establishes how the set behaves under a particular torque, temperature or working environment.
What jobs the set can and cannot cover
A two-drive socket kit is a practical starting point for routine disassembly and assembly when the required fasteners fall within its listed sizes. The combination can be useful for general mechanical maintenance, equipment adjustments, household repairs and construction-related hardware that uses compatible hex fasteners. Those examples describe the type of hand work the format supports; they are not a DEWALT claim that the kit contains every tool for any one repair.

Before starting a job, identify the fastener type and size, the amount of clearance around it and the torque procedure. A repair may require tools outside this set, such as larger drive sizes, specialty sockets, a torque wrench, pliers, locking tools, Torx or security bits, impact-rated accessories, breaker bars or manufacturer-specific service tools. The published contents establish that the kit includes the categories listed above, but they do not establish coverage for a specific vehicle, machine or building system.
Shallow versus deep access
The Canadian listing identifies deep sockets, while the U.S. summary lists the 1/4-inch six-point socket sizes without describing every socket as deep or shallow. Deep sockets can reach a nut farther along a protruding stud, but they may not fit where clearance is tight. Confirm the individual socket type in the case before choosing it.
When a 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch drive is not enough
Do not force a small-drive ratchet onto a fastener that needs substantially more leverage. A larger tool, a torque wrench or a manufacturer-specified procedure may be necessary. Adapters make accessories compatible with another drive size; they do not turn a light-duty drive into a higher-capacity one.

How to use the kit without damaging a fastener
- Identify the fastener. Determine whether it is a six-point hex head, a bit-driven screw or another profile. Choose a matching accessory rather than relying on a nearly fitting size.
- Select the drive. Use the 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch ratchet and a socket with the same drive, or use a suitable DEWALT adapter listed for the kit.
- Seat the socket fully. Push it straight onto the fastener. It should sit squarely on all six flats; stop if it rocks or bottoms out on an obstruction.
- Add an extension only when needed. An extension can improve reach, but it also adds joints and can make alignment less direct. Keep the ratchet and socket in line with the fastener.
- Set the ratchet direction. Check the selector before applying force. Keep your hand positioned so a sudden release will not strike an edge or moving component.
- Break the fastener free gradually. If it will not move with reasonable hand force, investigate corrosion, a locking compound, a wrong size or a required torque procedure instead of jumping on the ratchet.
- Finish and store the pieces. Remove the socket with the quick-release feature when available, wipe off contamination and return each item to the removable case so the inventory remains verifiable.
For assembly, start threads by hand where possible and use the socket only after the fastener is correctly engaged. If a specification calls for a measured torque, use a calibrated torque wrench; the 108-piece kit is not identified in the supplied product descriptions as including one.
DWMT73801 versus DEWALT’s 168-piece set
DEWALT identifies DWMT73803 as its 168-piece mechanics set and DWMT73801 as the related 108-piece option. The model numbers matter because the larger piece count does not describe the contents of DWMT73801.

The U.S. DEWALT product page states “1 Year Limited Warranty.” The Canadian page states “Full Lifetime Warranty.” These statements come from different regional pages and should not be merged into a single global warranty claim. Eligibility, exclusions, proof-of-purchase requirements and service procedures can depend on the country of sale.
Keep the receipt, model information and regional seller details. If a warranty issue arises, contact DEWALT through the support channel for the market where the set was purchased and quote DWMT73801. A warranty does not replace safe-use instructions or cover damage caused by using an unsuitable accessory or application unless the applicable terms say otherwise.
Buying and verification checklist
- Confirm the model: Look for DWMT73801, not only the phrase “108-piece.”
- Confirm the drive sizes: The set is built around 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch drives.
- Check the regional contents: Compare the case and package with the U.S. or Canadian DEWALT listing for your market, especially if deep sockets, bits or hex keys are important.
