Denmark is not switching all its streetlights to red. Municipal sources describe several site-specific projects: narrow-band red lights beside bat habitat in Gladsaxe, a path-lighting trial that shifts toward orange-red in Odense, and a proposed red-bollard route around Copenhagen’s Damhussøen. Together they show how municipalities are testing ways to guide people at night while limiting light in ecologically sensitive places—not evidence yet of a nationwide change or proven ecological gains.
Why are some Danish municipalities using red or orange-red light?
The projects are designed to balance nighttime access with concerns about light reaching bats and other wildlife. Their approaches combine light spectrum with where fixtures point, how far apart they are, and when or how strongly they operate. Red color alone does not define the design or establish its ecological effect.
Here is how the three documented projects differ:

How the Gladsaxe design uses red light and dark gaps
AFRY/Light Bureau describes a 700 m stretch of Frederiksborgvej beside an area used by roosting and foraging bats. The design specifies 30 bollards, each about 1 m high and spaced around 30 m apart, plus 12 poles 3.5 m high at road-crossing points. The project description says the gaps are intended to reduce total light and leave dark corridors for light-shy ground species while still lighting the route.
Gladsaxe Municipality has reported seven bat species recorded near Frederiksborgvej; its release says none was assessed as threatened or red-listed. That context helps explain the site-specific brief, but neither species presence nor the design intention demonstrates that the installation has improved ecological outcomes. AFRY says the case was intended to inform evaluation and future discussion.

What changes in Odense’s orange-red lighting trial?
Odense Municipality says it installed biodiversity lighting in November 2025 on about 1.3 km of path beside Ørbækvej, between Niels Bohrs Allé and Neder Holluf. Rather than using red light alone, the system combines a 3000 K white source with an 1800 K orange-red source. The municipality says the sources adjust in opposite directions by time, shifting toward orange-red later in the evening and night.
Kelvin figures here describe correlated color temperature; they are not a full measurement of the light spectrum or proof of a particular effect on wildlife. Odense says the sources have the same light intensity as other local paths and that the municipality and Energi Fyn assessed the result as safe for path use. That is the project’s assessment, not a general safety certification for red lighting. The municipality’s alderman for City and Culture, Søren Windell, described the installation as a test that might inspire other municipalities; it is a trial, not evidence that Denmark has adopted this system nationwide.

What is known about the Damhussøen proposal?
A Copenhagen municipal committee record dated 1 December 2025 describes a plan for about 75 downward-facing red bollards along roughly 1.9 km around the lake. The proposal places the light sources about 1.0–1.2 m high, with average spacing of 30 m, to create dark corridors. The stated goal is orientation along the route rather than continuous illumination. The record also notes objections concerning wildlife and the value of keeping the area dark.
The same record says the relevant preservation and nature-protection permissions had been granted by 2025. It also records that the committee case was postponed on 1 December 2025 and gives an expected construction start in mid-2026 and planned use in late 2026, conditional on approval and detailed design. Those were future dates in that record; the reviewed sources do not establish whether construction has since started or finished.

Are red streetlights better for bats and other wildlife?
The project sources describe red or orange-red lighting as part of an effort to limit disturbance, but they do not provide independent, quantified before-and-after ecological results for these specific installations. It would be premature to say that the lights have increased biodiversity or are proven to protect bats.
These examples also show why evaluating a lighting scheme requires more than asking whether it is red. Relevant design features include the spectrum, brightness, timing, direction, spacing, spill toward habitat or water, and the route’s actual needs—such as walking, cycling, or crossing a road. The ecological setting and monitoring after installation matter too. The Gladsaxe and Copenhagen sources describe habitat context and design intentions; they do not establish measured outcomes.

What the Danish projects could mean for urban lighting
The useful lesson is not that red is a universal replacement for white street lighting. It is that municipalities can treat darkness between fixtures, downward direction, lower mounting heights, and time-based changes as parts of a site-specific design. A route used for cycling or road crossings may have different visibility needs from a path where the goal is basic orientation.
Whether similar designs make sense elsewhere depends on local habitat, route use, engineering, and applicable public-space requirements. The Danish examples demonstrate distinct ways to test that balance. Their published project descriptions do not yet show that these approaches have delivered measured ecological improvements or transformed urban lighting beyond the individual sites.
