Examples from Germany and Czechia show distinct ornament-making traditions, while trees assembled for a museum exhibit demonstrate how community decorators express cultural ties. None of these examples represents every household in a country.
Where did the Christmas tree tradition begin?
There is no settled single-country answer. The Natural History Museum says that “What we now know as Christmas trees have their roots in Protestant northern Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.” Estonia, Latvia and Germany each have claims to early examples, based on different historical records. The museum’s account presents the origins as contested rather than naming one undisputed inventor.

How are Christmas trees decorated in Germany?
A German Federal Foreign Office account describes a 1605 written description of a Strasbourg household tree. Strasbourg was then German and is now in France. The tree was decorated with apples, wafers, gilt and sweets; this is an early account cited by the source, not proof of the first Christmas tree. The Foreign Office’s overview also emphasizes that decorations vary from one household to another.

Not every seasonal decoration is hung on a tree. The same account describes the Krippe, or nativity scene, as a household and public display. It also describes the Christmas pyramid: a wooden display in which candle heat turns a rotor and its figures.
What is distinctive about Czech Christmas tree decorations?
Czechia is associated with handmade decorations made from blown glass beads. UNESCO’s heritage record describes the practice as a longstanding local method of decorating trees and as evidence of both craft and a literary folk tradition. It documents a particular craft, not a custom practiced by every Czech family. UNESCO’s record of the tradition offers a specific example of how a material and a making technique can shape a tree’s appearance.

What do community-decorated trees show about other traditions?
The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry’s Trees and Traditions exhibit featured trees decorated by community organizations and families. These are examples created for the exhibit, rather than a definitive guide to how people across each country decorate at home.

Does the type of Christmas tree affect decorating?
The tree itself can influence the practical experience of decorating and maintaining it. Natural History Museum General Herbarium curator Jacek Wajer says Norway spruce tends to shed needles easily in centrally heated homes. He says Nordmann fir retains its needles longer and has less prickly foliage. That is a comparison of those two traits, not a ranking of national decorating traditions. The Natural History Museum discusses the tree species.
