The National Day of Making was proclaimed for June 18, 2014, alongside the first White House Maker Faire. Its invitation was nationwide: make something, learn a skill, share a project or bring people together—not just attend an event in Washington. The date is historical; the sources here do not establish an official 2026 schedule.
What was the National Day of Making?
On June 17, 2014, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation designating June 18 as the National Day of Making. The White House paired the day with its first Maker Faire and encouraged people across the country to celebrate in homes, schools, makerspaces and communities. The invitation was not limited to people attending the White House event.
Obama called on Americans to observe the day with activities that would encourage makers and manufacturers to share their talents and develop their skills. The White House guide suggested sharing work under #NationOfMakers. The event and date refer to the 2014 celebration, rather than a currently verified annual observance.

What counts as making?
Making can include building, crafting, composing, shaping, creating and tinkering. In a 2014 White House interview, Maker Media CEO Dale Dougherty described it as work that crosses art and science, technology and design, and often combines multiple interests and skills. His definition makes room for both hands-on craft and technology-enabled projects.

Ways to take part in the spirit of the day
The original invitation offered options for different ages, experience levels and settings. You can adapt them to a home, school, workshop, makerspace or online gathering.
- Make or share: Start a small project with friends or family, or share a photo of something already underway.
- Open a space or meet online: Invite people to visit a local makerspace, or gather virtually to show inventions and works in progress.
- Teach or learn: Demonstrate a skill for someone else, or ask a mentor to help you learn one.
- Publish project plans: Explain how you made something so others can build it, adapt it or remix the design.
- Build community: Host a workshop or class, or bring people together to discuss maker programs and opportunities nearby.

Choose a project that fits your tools and space
A project does not need specialized equipment to count. The 2014 White House guide named 3D printers, laser cutters, design software and desktop machine tools as examples of technologies expanding access to making—not as a checklist or a requirement.
Start with what you want to make, then decide what tools the work actually calls for. A simple project might use materials and hand tools you already have. If a design needs a custom printed part or another specialized process, consider whether a local makerspace or workshop can provide access before buying equipment. The historical guide does not recommend a particular tool or machine.
