DaVinci composite slate and shake roofing can offer a high-end appearance and documented Class 4 impact performance, while asphalt shingles remain the comparison category many contractors price most often. There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on the exact roof assembly, local code, installation quality, written warranty, appearance goals and a project-specific estimate.
Published DaVinci testing includes a Class A fire result, a passed 110 mph wind test and Class 4 impact resistance, but those figures apply to the products and assemblies tested—not automatically to every roof. Current, apples-to-apples installed prices and service-life comparisons were not established, so compare detailed bids rather than relying on generic cost or longevity claims.

DaVinci and asphalt shingles are different buying decisions
DaVinci Roofscapes manufactures polymer-composite roofing in slate-style and shake-style profiles. Asphalt shingles are the alternative material category in this comparison. DaVinci’s 2024 Select Shake guide describes an engineered rib structure beneath the shake profile, so the finished roof is a manufactured system rather than a loose collection of decorative pieces.

That distinction matters when you request estimates. A contractor must price the complete roof assembly, including preparation, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, labor and disposal. Comparing a DaVinci material price with an asphalt-shingle material price alone can produce a misleading result.

What DaVinci’s published testing actually shows
Class 4 impact resistance
UL 2218 Class 4 is the highest class used in the cited impact test scale. DaVinci’s own testing summary, dated March 2019, reports Class 4 for the products and tests it describes. A BOCA Engineering Co. evaluation dated October 16, 2023, also reports UL 2218 Class 4 for DaVinci roofing materials.
Use that result as evidence about the tested material and assembly, not as a promise that every roof will respond identically to every storm. Ask your contractor to provide the test documentation applicable to the exact product and installation being proposed.

The March 2019 DaVinci testing summary reports a Class A result under ASTM E108. The later BOCA evaluation adds an important qualification: ASTM E108 classification may be Class A, B or C depending on assembly details and installation conditions.
Therefore, “DaVinci is always Class A” is too broad. The roof covering, underlayment, deck, slope, attachment method and other assembly details can affect the classification. Have the contractor identify the tested assembly and confirm that it matches your roof design and local code requirements.
Wind testing
DaVinci’s March 2019 manufacturer-published summary reports that the products and tests it describes passed a 110 mph wind test. That number is a test result, not a universal wind rating for every DaVinci installation. The BOCA evaluation likewise states that wind values depend on the assembly and installation.

The BOCA report records a 747°F spontaneous ignition temperature under ASTM D1929. This is a material-test value; it is not the same thing as a roof fire classification and should not be presented as one.
DaVinci’s 2019 summary also reports accelerated-weathering and freeze-thaw testing. Those tests can indicate how the tested material performed under laboratory cycles, but they do not establish a guaranteed real-world service life for a particular roof.
Why assembly and installation change the result
Roof ratings belong to an assembly, not merely to a product name. Two roofs using the same covering can differ in deck condition, underlayment, fasteners, slope, flashing, ventilation and installation method. Those differences help explain why the BOCA evaluation qualifies both fire and wind performance.
The Select Shake installation guide, labeled February 2024, states: “This information is provided for the use of professional roofing contractors. This Installation Guide does not supersede local building codes which should always be followed.” That instruction should shape the entire buying process.
Flashing at valleys and overhangs
The guide describes a ribbed support structure beneath certain shake cuts at valleys and overhangs. It instructs installers to hide that structure with standard metal flashing. Ask the contractor to show on the proposal where this flashing occurs and which material, dimensions and installation method will be used.

A drawing or written detail is preferable to a verbal assurance. It gives you something to compare when reviewing bids and helps the inspector verify that the visible finished roof matches the required detail.
Local code comes first
Do not assume a manufacturer guide replaces code requirements. Confirm permit needs, required underlayment, fire provisions, wind design, flashing rules and any restrictions from a homeowners association or historic district before signing a contract.
Cost: compare complete scopes, not internet averages
The available documentation does not establish a current, authoritative installed-cost comparison between DaVinci and asphalt shingles for the same roof, geography, date and installation scope. A contractor comparison discusses both materials but does not provide a dependable basis for a universal price, savings figure, payback period or replacement interval.
Ask each bidder for a written estimate using the same scope. At minimum, require separate line items for:
- Removal and disposal of existing roofing.
- Decking inspection and any priced repair or replacement allowance.
- Underlayment and ice- or water-protection materials where required.
- Valley, eave, rake, wall and chimney flashing.
- Ventilation work, including changes needed to meet code.
- Roof covering, accessories, fasteners and starter materials.
- Labor, permits, inspections, taxes and disposal fees.
- Access equipment, protection of landscaping and cleanup.
Have both contractors state what is excluded. An apparently lower bid may omit tear-off, deck repairs, flashing replacement or ventilation work that another bidder included.
How to normalize two estimates
- Give every bidder the same roof measurements, photographs and known problem areas.
- Request the exact product name, profile, color and accessory package, not just “DaVinci” or “asphalt.”
- Require quantities and unit prices for decking repairs and other allowances.
- Confirm whether the estimate assumes one layer or multiple layers of existing roofing.
- Ask for the expected start date, duration, payment schedule and change-order procedure.
- Compare the totals only after the scopes, exclusions and warranty documents match.
Service life: what can and cannot be concluded
The cited material does not support a reliable, apples-to-apples service-life number for DaVinci versus asphalt shingles. Accelerated-weathering, freeze-thaw and other laboratory results are evidence about test performance; they are not a guarantee of how long a roof will last in your climate.

Actual field life is influenced by exposure, ventilation, installation quality, maintenance, storm damage, foot traffic and the condition of the supporting roof. Rather than accepting a generic “lasts X years” statement, ask the contractor to explain the assumptions behind any life estimate and to provide the applicable written warranty.
Warranty terms need product-level verification
Warranty language is not interchangeable across DaVinci products. The Inspire brochure identifies a 50-Year Limited Lifetime Warranty for Inspire Classic Slate. That named warranty should not be generalized to every DaVinci slate or shake product, and a limited material warranty is not the same as a guaranteed service life.
Before signing, obtain the current full warranty for the exact product in the proposal. Check:
- Who is covered and whether the warranty can transfer to a subsequent owner.
- What defects are covered and for how long.
- Whether coverage is prorated or limited after an initial period.
- Which installation, ventilation and maintenance conditions are required.
- What exclusions apply to storms, improper work, structural movement or alterations.
- Who handles a claim and what documentation is required.
DaVinci’s Select Shake guide states that the company does not warrant or take responsibility for installation. The installer’s contract and workmanship warranty therefore matter as much as the material document. Keep both documents, along with permits, photographs and paid invoices.
Choosing an installer
Because the cited guide is intended for professional roofing contractors, installer competence is a central selection criterion. Look for a contractor who can demonstrate experience with the exact DaVinci profile or, for asphalt, the exact product system being quoted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteQuestions to ask before hiring
- How many roofs using this exact profile have you completed?
- Which written installation instructions and local code provisions will govern the work?
- Can you provide the tested fire and wind assembly that matches my roof?
- How will you detail valleys, overhangs, walls, chimneys and penetrations?
- Who performs the work, and how is subcontractor responsibility handled?
- What workmanship warranty is included, and how are service calls documented?
- What happens if concealed decking damage is found after tear-off?
Verify licensing, insurance, permit responsibility and references through the appropriate local authorities. A manufacturer’s material warranty does not replace those checks.

When DaVinci may fit your priorities
DaVinci deserves closer consideration when slate or shake appearance is important, when you want to evaluate a documented Class 4 impact result, or when the project’s design and code requirements can be matched to a tested assembly. It may also suit a homeowner willing to select an installer with specific product experience and to review product-level warranty conditions carefully.
Those advantages do not remove the need to compare complete bids. The appearance, documented tests and warranty have value only if the proposed assembly is allowed by code and installed correctly.
When asphalt shingles may fit your priorities
Asphalt shingles remain a legitimate comparison category when a contractor can provide a complete, code-compliant proposal that meets your appearance, budget and performance priorities. The relevant question is not whether asphalt is automatically cheaper or shorter-lived; the available documentation does not establish those universal claims. Ask for the exact product’s test data, warranty and installed scope, then compare it directly with the DaVinci proposal.
A practical decision process
- Define the roof. Record roof areas, slopes, existing layers, penetrations, valleys, ventilation and known leaks.
- Confirm constraints. Check local code, permit rules, fire and wind requirements, neighborhood restrictions and any historic-review conditions.
- Select comparable products. Name the DaVinci profile or asphalt product, color, accessories and underlayment in every bid.
- Verify tested performance. Request assembly-specific fire, impact and wind documentation; do not rely on a material name alone.
- Get at least two written scopes. Require matching line items for tear-off, decking, flashing, ventilation, labor and disposal.
- Review warranties. Read the current material warranty and the contractor’s workmanship warranty together.
- Choose the installer, not just the covering. Favor the bid that clearly explains code compliance, flashing details, supervision and change orders.
- Document the completed roof. Keep permits, inspection records, product labels, photographs of concealed work and final warranty paperwork.
Bottom line
DaVinci’s published evidence is meaningful but specific: Class 4 impact resistance is reported in 2019 manufacturer testing and a 2023 BOCA evaluation; the 2019 summary reports Class A fire performance and a passed 110 mph wind test; and the BOCA report warns that fire and wind results depend on assembly and installation. Those figures should guide verification, not replace it.
Choose between DaVinci and asphalt shingles only after you have a location-specific, code-aware scope, a qualified installer, an assembly that matches the required tests and the exact current warranty in writing. Without those details, a universal price, lifespan or “best roof” verdict would be guesswork.
