DaVinci composite tiles and asphalt shingles are not interchangeable line items. The better choice depends on the exact roof covering, deck condition, underlayment, flashing and ventilation details, local code, installer skill, warranty terms and the complete installed quote. DaVinci’s published overview documents specific test results for products covered by that document, but it is a manufacturer comparison—not an independent cost or service-life study against a named asphalt shingle.
Use the framework below to compare a real DaVinci Shake or Slate proposal with a real asphalt-shingle proposal on the same house and scope of work.

What you are actually comparing
A roof replacement is a system decision. The visible covering is only one layer. A sound comparison includes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the precise DaVinci product (Shake or Slate) or the precise asphalt-shingle model and color;
- roof-deck inspection and any allowance for replacing damaged sheathing;
- underlayment, ice-barrier provisions where required, flashing, ventilation and fastening;
- tear-off, disposal, access and site-protection work;
- local building-code requirements and any wind, fire or insurance conditions;
- the installing contractor’s experience with that product and assembly; and
- warranty coverage, exclusions, transfer rules and claim procedures.
A quote that names only “DaVinci roof” or “architectural shingles” does not establish that the two systems are equivalent. Ask for product names, quantities, installation details and exclusions before judging the price or performance.

At-a-glance comparison
| Decision area | DaVinci composite tiles | Asphalt shingles | What the comparison requires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Style | Slate-style and shake-style profiles are marketed by DaVinci. | Appearance depends on the selected shingle line, profile, color and manufacturer. | Place actual samples on the house and compare the specific products, not the category name. |
| Fire performance | The DaVinci overview reports ASTM E 108 Class A for products covered by that document. | Rating varies by product and roof assembly. | Obtain the current listing for the exact shingle and assembly. |
| Impact performance | The overview reports UL 2218 Class 4. | Rating varies by product; some shingles may have no Class 4 listing. | Check the exact product test report and installation conditions. |
| Wind documentation | The overview reports ASTM D 3161 certification to 110 mph for the products covered. | Wind resistance varies by product, fastening pattern, deck and exposure. | Compare current product-level documentation and the required installation method. |
| Warranty | U.S./Canada lifetime-limited warranty for named DaVinci Shake and Slate products, with conditions, exclusions, time-based limits, wind provisions and installation-cost language. | Terms differ by manufacturer, product, installer status and registration requirements. | Read the complete warranty for the quoted model and identify who performs each remedy. |
| Installed cost | Not stated in the DaVinci product documents. | Not stated for any named asphalt product. | Use itemized local bids for identical roof scope; do not infer a premium or payback period. |

Appearance and design fit
DaVinci Slate and Shake profiles
DaVinci markets polymeric composite tiles in slate and shake styles. Slate-style courses can support a formal, historic or high-contrast design; shake-style profiles can provide a more textured, rustic appearance. The manufacturer describes the products in promotional language as “DaVinci composite roofing tiles blend state-of-the-art materials with an artist’s touch.” That sentence is corporate product copy, not an independent performance finding.
Evaluate a physical sample in daylight and from the street. Composite tiles can have variation within a blended color, and the visual effect changes with roof pitch, dormers, hips, valleys and trim. Ask the installer how the manufacturer’s color-blending instructions are followed and whether replacement tiles can be matched if a repair is needed years later.
Asphalt-shingle appearance
Asphalt shingles range from low-profile strip designs to dimensional or designer profiles. Color, shadow lines and granule pattern can make the same roof shape look substantially different. Compare the exact shingle series, not a generic “architectural” label. Confirm whether the sample shown is the current product and whether the quoted color is available in your region.
Questions that prevent a visual mismatch
- What are the manufacturer’s approved colors and blending instructions?
- Will the ridge, hip, valley and starter components be from the same product system?
- How will visible flashing, vents and skylight surrounds coordinate with the roof color?
- Can the contractor show a completed local installation of the exact profile?
Published fire, impact and wind results
The DaVinci Roofing & Siding Product Overview, whose footer indicates March 2021, reports three results for the products covered in that document:
- ASTM E 108: Class A fire result.
- UL 2218: Class 4 impact result.
- ASTM D 3161: certification to a 110 mph wind rating.
These are manufacturer-published product results. They are not an independent, across-the-market comparison with all asphalt shingles, and a rating for one product or assembly cannot automatically be assigned to every DaVinci line or to an entire installed roof. The overview directs readers to DaVinci for current tests and certifications.

Why the assembly matters
Test standards apply under defined conditions. Deck type, underlayment, fastener type and spacing, edge treatment, slope and other installation details can affect the listed assembly. A contractor should identify the exact current listing and installation guide used for your project. If the roof is in a high-wind, wildfire, hail or other regulated area, ask the building department or insurer which listing and documentation they require.
How to compare an asphalt product fairly
Request the same categories of evidence for the named asphalt shingle: fire classification, impact classification if claimed, wind rating, required fastener pattern, minimum slope and approved underlayment or accessory components. “Impact resistant,” “high wind” or “Class A” in an advertisement is not enough to prove that the quoted assembly meets your local requirement.

DaVinci’s U.S./Canada document
The warranty issued by Westlake DaVinci Roofscapes, LLC identifies DaVinci Shake and DaVinci Slate products and is marked effective March 1, 2019. It is a lifetime-limited warranty, not an unconditional promise that a roof will last for a particular number of years. The document addresses claim requirements, time-based coverage limits, wind limitations and installation-cost language, along with exclusions and other conditions.
Before signing, obtain the current warranty that applies to the exact product and location. Confirm the start date, what defects are covered, how coverage changes over time, whether transfer is permitted, which labor or tear-off costs are included, and what the owner must do to submit a claim. Keep the sales contract, product identification, photographs and completion documents with the warranty.
Questions for any asphalt-shingle warranty
- Is the warranty from the shingle manufacturer, the installer, or both?
- Does enhanced coverage depend on using a certified contractor or registering the roof?
- What is covered during the initial period and what changes afterward?
- Are wind, algae, color variation, improper ventilation, inadequate slope or installation errors excluded?
- Does the remedy provide repair, replacement materials, labor, disposal or only a prorated payment?
- Can the warranty be transferred when the property is sold, and is there a deadline?
Never convert the word “lifetime” into a guaranteed service-life number. Warranty duration and expected physical performance are different questions.

Installed cost: build an apples-to-apples quote
No current comparable installed prices were established for DaVinci versus a named asphalt shingle, so a credible article cannot supply a universal dollar premium, payback period or return-on-investment calculation. Roof geometry, access, regional labor, disposal fees, deck repairs and code upgrades can change the total substantially.
Require the same scope in both bids
- Measure the same roof area. Ask each contractor to show the measured squares, waste allowance and all roof sections included.
- Separate tear-off and disposal. Identify the number of existing layers, disposal method and any additional charge for concealed layers.
- Include deck work transparently. Require a unit price or allowance for damaged sheathing rather than an open-ended change order.
- List every roof-system component. The bid should name underlayment, ice-barrier material where required, starter courses, field covering, ridge and hip products, valley treatment, flashing, vents, fasteners and sealants.
- Address penetrations and transitions. Include chimneys, skylights, plumbing vents, walls, dormers, eaves and gutters affected by the work.
- State labor and protection. Clarify supervision, daily cleanup, landscaping protection, magnetic nail collection and final inspection.
- Identify taxes, permits and allowances. Make clear whether permit fees, engineering or code-driven upgrades are included.
Compare the totals only after these lines match. A lower bid can simply omit flashing replacement, ventilation, deck repairs or required accessories.
Code, listing and roof-assembly checks
QAI’s listing covers DaVinci polymeric roof-covering products and provides assembly and listing context, including underlayment and roof-covering information. Use the current QAI listing, the current DaVinci installation guide and your jurisdiction’s adopted code for the actual project. Do not infer that a rating applies regardless of deck, underlayment, fastening, roof slope or location.
Before the contract
- Ask the contractor to identify the exact product designation and current installation instructions.
- Confirm the roof slope falls within the product’s permitted range.
- Verify required underlayment, valley construction, flashing and fastening details.
- Check whether your municipality requires a particular fire or wind classification.
- Ask the building official or insurer whether documentation is needed for a premium, permit or inspection.
During installation
Keep the product cartons, delivery documents and installation records. Photograph deck repairs and concealed flashing before they are covered. If the installer proposes a substitution, require written confirmation that the substitute is compatible with the manufacturer’s instructions, the listed assembly and local code.
Installer capability can decide the outcome
Composite tiles and asphalt shingles both depend on correct layout, fastening, flashing and weatherproofing, but a contractor experienced with one material may not be experienced with the other. Ask for recent projects using the exact DaVinci Shake or Slate profile—or the exact asphalt product—and request references for roofs of similar complexity.

Verify the contractor
- Confirm licensing, insurance and workers’ compensation requirements in your jurisdiction.
- Ask who will perform the work and whether subcontractors are used.
- Request the manufacturer’s installation training or certification information where applicable.
- Review a written workmanship warranty separately from the material warranty.
- Ask how the contractor handles damaged tiles or shingles, color matching and future service.
- Confirm who obtains permits and schedules inspections.
A strong material warranty cannot correct an installation that does not follow the listed assembly. Conversely, a skilled roofer cannot extend coverage beyond the manufacturer’s written terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision process
Choose DaVinci when the project priorities point there
DaVinci is worth serious consideration when a slate or shake appearance is central to the design, the exact product’s current documentation satisfies local requirements, and you have a qualified installer who can provide a complete, itemized assembly. The decision should remain tied to the written quote and warranty rather than to a category-wide assumption about durability or value.
Choose asphalt shingles when the specific proposal fits better
An asphalt system may be the better fit when its appearance meets the design brief, its documented fire, impact and wind performance satisfies the site, and local contractors can install and service that exact product at a scope and warranty you understand. The category contains many products; do not treat one shingle’s rating or warranty as representative of all asphalt shingles.
Pause and obtain more information when
- either bid uses a generic product name;
- the contractor cannot identify the current listing or installation guide;
- the warranty is summarized verbally but not supplied in full;
- the quote excludes deck, flashing or ventilation work without explaining the assumption;
- the price difference is presented without matching the scopes; or
- the installer has no relevant completed projects to show.
Common comparison mistakes
Using a category average as a product fact
“Composite,” “architectural shingle,” “Class 4” and “lifetime” are not complete specifications. Tie every claim to a named product, current document and installation condition.
Comparing retail material prices with installed roofing
A package of roof covering is not a complete roof system. Labor, tear-off, disposal, deck repairs, flashing, underlayment, ventilation, permits and site protection can dominate the final price.
Best Value
- The product is manufactured in united states
Assuming a test result covers every roof
The published DaVinci ratings apply to products covered by the referenced overview and its test context. Confirm the exact assembly for your address instead of copying a rating into a contract.
Reading “lifetime” as a service-life guarantee
The DaVinci warranty is limited and conditional, with time-based provisions and exclusions. Read the remedy and claim requirements; do not use the heading alone to forecast replacement timing.
Ignoring future repair logistics
Ask how replacement pieces will be sourced, how discontinued colors are handled and whether the installer will remain available. Record product names and colors in your closeout documents.
Questions to take to your roofer
- What exact DaVinci or asphalt product, profile, color and accessory package is quoted?
- Which current fire, impact and wind documents apply to this product and this roof assembly?
- What deck, underlayment, flashing and ventilation assumptions are included?
- What conditions would trigger a change order, and what are the unit prices?
- Who will install the roof, and how many comparable projects have they completed?
- What does the material warranty cover at installation, after the initial period and after a transfer?
- What labor, tear-off and disposal costs are included in a warranty remedy?
- What local code, permit or insurance documentation is required?
- What maintenance and inspection records should the owner keep?
- Can the contractor provide a written completion package with product identification, photographs and warranty documents?
Bottom line
There is no defensible universal winner between DaVinci Roofscapes and asphalt shingles from the available evidence. DaVinci’s March 2021 overview reports Class A fire, UL 2218 Class 4 impact and ASTM D 3161 certification to 110 mph for the products it covers, while its U.S./Canada warranty effective March 1, 2019 is limited and conditional. Those facts do not establish a cost premium, a guaranteed lifespan or superiority over every asphalt shingle.
Get competing, itemized proposals for the same roof assembly; verify current listings and local code; read the complete warranties; and select the material your qualified installer can correctly install and support. That process produces a more reliable decision than choosing from a material label or a headline rating.
