Daylighting can make a fitness space feel brighter, more connected to its surroundings and easier to use, but it should not be presented as a proven exercise intervention. The strongest defensible approach is to combine useful daylight with glare control, responsive electric lighting, safe equipment planning and operating hours that fit users’ schedules. WELL v7 treats light and fitness as separate concepts, and current evidence does not show that daylight alone makes people exercise more or perform better.
What daylighting contributes to a fitness facility
Daylighting design is the deliberate use of windows, roof openings or other building features to bring natural light into occupied areas. In an exercise facility, its value is primarily environmental and visual: it can help people see the space, understand circulation routes and experience a less enclosed setting during the day. Those benefits depend on where light lands, how evenly it is distributed and whether direct sun creates discomfort.

Daylight is therefore a design input, not a stand-alone fitness program. A successful project still needs equipment that supports different activities, enough clearance for safe use, supervision or instruction where appropriate, and access hours that work for the intended population.

Visual comfort is as important as light quantity
More daylight is not automatically better. Direct sun on a treadmill display, reflective weight plates or a polished floor can create veiling reflections and make users squint or change position. A bright window in the field of view can also become a distraction during balance, lifting or group instruction. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) identifies daylight as a useful building resource while recommending shades where glare must be controlled.

Shading should be designed so that reducing glare does not leave the entire room dependent on electric light. A controllable shade, a carefully located opening and a dimmable electric system can work together: the shade manages uncomfortable brightness while the electric system supplies the light that daylight cannot provide at a particular time of day.
Daylight does not replace fitness programming
GSA guidance for workplace exercise rooms places daylight within a broader planning picture. It recommends a mix of cardiovascular, strength-training and free-weight equipment, opportunities for group activity, help with safe equipment use and hours that accommodate users’ schedules. These operational decisions affect whether a room is genuinely usable, regardless of its window area.
What the available evidence actually shows
Evidence connecting daylight with physical activity is indirect. The frequently cited pilot by Mohamed Boubekri and colleagues compared office workers rather than gym users. It included 49 participants: 27 day-shift workers in windowless workplaces and 22 comparable workers in workplaces with windows. Only 21 participants wore actigraphy devices.
| Study detail | What was reported | How to interpret it for a fitness project |
|---|---|---|
| Participants | 49 office workers; 27 in windowless workplaces and 22 in workplaces with windows | The sample was not drawn from gyms or other exercise facilities. |
| Objective measurements | A subset of 21 participants wore actigraphy devices | The measured subgroup was small. |
| Observed differences | Workers with windows had more light exposure during the workweek, a trend toward more physical activity and longer sleep duration measured by actigraphy | The findings indicate an association, not a demonstrated daylight-caused exercise effect. |
| Limitations identified by the paper | Small sample size, volunteer or convenience sampling and limited actigraphy coverage | Results should not be converted into a predicted increase in gym attendance, exercise duration or performance. |
No gym-specific exercise effect size was established in the reviewed material. There is no supported percentage increase in facility use, minutes exercised or athletic output that can be attributed to daylighting. A design brief should state this limitation plainly so that a wellness objective is not mistaken for a measured outcome.

Design daylight and exercise tasks together
Map activities before selecting openings
Start with a plan of the occupied exercise zones: cardio machines, strength equipment, free-weight areas, stretching or mobility space, circulation paths and any group-training area. Identify where users look for long periods, where mirrors or screens are installed and where instructors need clear sight lines. Then test how daylight will reach those zones at different times of day.
ISO 19454:2019 describes daylight-opening design as a process that considers building context, including sunshine duration and daylight-opening ratios. The standard, reviewed and confirmed in 2024, does not prescribe one universal window or skylight size for fitness facilities. Opening decisions must be made against the site, orientation, surrounding buildings, climate, program and operating schedule.
Distribute light rather than creating a single bright patch
Users move between stations, so a design that illuminates only the perimeter can leave interior equipment visually disconnected from the daylit edge. During concept design, examine light distribution across the full occupied area and identify transitions between bright and dim zones. The goal is a comfortable visual field that supports movement, reading controls and recognizing other users without forcing everyone to face a bright opening.
Provide a deliberate glare-control strategy
GSA recommends shades where daylight creates glare. In practice, the control strategy should answer three questions:

- Which openings can produce direct sun in the users’ view or on reflective equipment?
- Can occupants or staff adjust the shade by zone rather than darkening the whole room?
- What electric lighting level is available when shades are closed or daylight is insufficient?
Control logic should be explained to staff and, where appropriate, made understandable to users. A shade that is difficult to operate may remain in the wrong position, while an automatic system that ignores class changes can create complaints even when its sensor readings are technically acceptable.
Coordinate daylight with electric lighting
Daylight varies with weather, season, time and external obstructions. GSA therefore recommends supplemental electric lighting when daylight access is inadequate for circadian stimulation. Electric lighting should be zoned and controllable so that perimeter areas can respond differently from deeper parts of the room. Commissioning should verify that controls do not produce abrupt changes that distract users during workouts.
ANSI/IES RP-46-25 is a 2025 recommended practice intended to translate evidence about physiological and behavioral responses to light into recommendations for daytime interiors. Its public description includes measurement of physiological lighting responses and topics such as circadian entrainment, alertness and performance. The public product information does not provide a numeric gym threshold, so a project should not claim compliance with an invented daylight or light-dose value.

| Decision criterion | Questions for the design team | Evidence-based boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Reach and distribution | Which occupied exercise areas receive useful daylight, and how does the distribution change through the day? | ISO 19454:2019 supports a context-based process using factors such as sunshine duration and opening ratios; it does not set a universal gym opening specification. |
| Glare control | Can direct sun and reflections be controlled without leaving the room unnecessarily dark? | GSA recommends shades where needed and supplemental electric lighting when daylight is inadequate. |
| Electric-light coordination | Are zones, sensors, dimming and manual overrides matched to the activity plan? | ANSI/IES RP-46-25 addresses physiological and behavioral responses to light, but its public description does not disclose project-specific numeric thresholds. |
| Building and local conditions | Do openings fit the site, surrounding buildings, climate, maintenance plan and intended hours? | ISO’s process is project-specific; the reviewed sources do not identify a best orientation or product. |
| Overall fitness support | Does the room also provide varied equipment, safe-use assistance, group opportunities and workable hours? | GSA treats these operational and programming decisions as part of a usable exercise room. |
Use the right standard for the facility
WELL v7: related goals, separate concepts
WELL v7 addresses Light and Fitness as separate concepts. Light-related features concern issues such as circadian disruption, windows, lighting output and controls. Fitness features are intended to encourage physical activity. This structure is useful because it prevents a project from treating a daylight feature as proof that the fitness objective has been met.
A project may pursue both concepts, but documentation should keep the claims distinct: describe what the lighting design does, then separately document how programming, access, equipment or policies encourage movement.
EN 17229:2026 and public fitness clubs
The current NEN listing shows EN 17229:2026 as effective from March 1, 2026. Its scope covers publicly accessible fitness clubs, including equipment positioning and environmental and procedural requirements for safe exercise. That scope does not automatically establish requirements for every private, residential or workplace exercise room.

A practical daylighting workflow
- Define the users and schedule. Record whether the space serves staff, members, residents, students or the public, and note when each activity occurs. Early-morning and evening programs may rely on electric lighting even in a well-daylit room.
- Map the activity zones. Place cardio, strength, free-weight, group and circulation areas before fixing opening locations. Mark sight lines, mirrors, displays and surfaces likely to reflect sunlight.
- Study the site and sun. Review orientation, neighboring obstructions and seasonal sunshine duration. Use the daylight-opening process described by ISO 19454:2019 rather than applying a generic window-to-floor rule.
- Test glare scenarios. Check direct sun and reflections at representative times, including periods when classes or high-use equipment are operating. Specify where shades are needed and how they will be controlled.
- Zone supplemental lighting. Provide electric light for areas and times that daylight cannot serve, with controls that allow appropriate response to changing conditions.
- Coordinate with equipment and safety layouts. Confirm that openings, shades and luminaires do not interfere with equipment clearances, spotting positions, emergency routes or instructor visibility.
- Verify operation after installation. Commission sensors, dimming, shade controls and manual overrides. Observe the room during actual activities, not only when it is empty.
- Document claims accurately. State the environmental and visual objectives achieved. Do not promise increased exercise, improved performance or a specific health outcome unless a project-specific evaluation measures it.
Common failure modes and corrections
Bright windows that users avoid
If users turn equipment away from a window or staff keep shades permanently closed, investigate glare and reflections before adding more light. Repositioning equipment, dividing shade zones or changing control settings may solve the problem more effectively than increasing glazing.
Daylight concentrated at the perimeter
A bright edge with a dim interior can make the room feel uneven and leave controls or equipment displays hard to read. Rebalance electric-light zones and review whether the opening strategy serves the occupied plan rather than only the facade.
Automatic controls that conflict with classes
Rapid dimming, unexpected shade movement or a darkened instructor area can disrupt a session. Set operating modes around scheduled activities and retain a staff override, then test those modes with real users.

Wellness claims exceeding the evidence
The office-worker pilot does not justify a claim that daylight increases gym attendance or athletic performance. Use measurable project outcomes such as glare complaints, shade use, lighting energy, user comfort surveys or documented operating performance instead.
Applying a public-club standard to the wrong room
EN 17229:2026 is listed for publicly accessible fitness clubs. Confirm scope before using it as the governing reference for a residential gym, private corporate room or other limited-access facility.
What a complete brief should require
- A daylight narrative identifying occupied areas to be served and the visual tasks performed there.
- A glare-control strategy with shade locations, control zones and manual override provisions.
- A supplemental-lighting plan for cloudy conditions, deep-plan areas and non-daylight operating hours.
- An opening analysis that considers site context and sunshine duration rather than relying on a universal gym ratio.
- An equipment and circulation plan covering cardiovascular, strength-training, free-weight and group uses where those activities are in scope.
- Safe-use assistance, supervision and operating hours matched to the intended users.
- A standards schedule identifying whether WELL v7 concepts, ANSI/IES RP-46-25, ISO 19454:2019 or EN 17229:2026 applies, and which parts are actually relevant.
- A post-occupancy check that records comfort and control performance without attributing exercise outcomes to daylight unless they are independently measured.
Daylighting is most defensible in a fitness project when it is treated as one coordinated layer of the environment. It can support visual comfort and a more usable daytime setting, while glare management, electric-light controls, safe planning and accessible programming determine whether the facility works for the people who use it.
