Data Center HVAC FAQs: Cooling Loads, CRAC vs. CRAH, Redundancy, Efficiency and Maintenance

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data-center cooling must remove the heat generated by IT equipment and other facility loads under the required operating and failure conditions. Outdoor temperature does not eliminate that heat load; it changes whether economizers can reduce mechanical cooling. Reliable design combines correctly sized heat removal, controlled airflow, maintainable equipment, and a redundancy strategy that matches the facility’s availability objective.

This guide answers the practical questions owners, facilities engineers and operators ask about cooling capacity, CRAC and CRAH systems, N+1 arrangements, energy and water use, controls, and maintenance. It is general guidance, not a site-specific design or compliance specification.

How much cooling does a data center need?

The cooling load is the heat that the HVAC system must remove from servers, storage, networking equipment, lighting, people and other operating systems. IT equipment is normally the dominant source, but the final design also depends on the room, electrical infrastructure, air-distribution arrangement, heat-rejection equipment and the operating condition required during failures or maintenance.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains that a data-center cooling load is independent of outdoor-air temperature. A cold day does not make the IT heat disappear. Weather affects the operating method: outdoor-air or water-side economizers may displace compressor or chiller work when conditions and air-quality requirements permit.

Build the load estimate from the IT design

  1. Establish the IT load. Use the expected electrical demand of servers, storage and network equipment for the design scenario. Include growth assumptions and identify whether the figure is a measured demand, a nameplate limit or a planning allowance.
  2. Add non-IT heat sources. Account for lighting, occupants, UPS and electrical-distribution losses, pumps, fans and other equipment that releases heat into the conditioned space or into the cooling plant.
  3. Model airflow and heat-transfer stages. A room can have adequate nominal tonnage yet still overheat rack inlets if supply air is blocked, bypasses the load or mixes with hot return air.
  4. Check the required failure condition. Size the available capacity for the stated outage and maintenance cases, not only for normal operation. The acceptable result may be different for a concurrently maintainable facility than for a lower-availability installation.
  5. Validate against the actual operating envelope. Confirm that coils, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, controls and heat-rejection equipment can deliver the required temperature and flow at design outdoor conditions and at expected part load.

There is no universal sizing formula that can be applied safely to every data center. Climate, density, water availability, equipment specifications, codes and the selected redundancy topology all change the answer. A project engineer should document assumptions and test them against commissioning data before the plant is accepted.

What are the main data-center HVAC arrangements?

Most facilities combine room-level air handlers with a heat-rejection system. The room equipment may be compressorized, chilled-water based, or part of a larger liquid-cooling architecture. The right arrangement is a plant decision, not a choice made from the room unit’s label alone.

CRAC: compressorized computer-room air conditioning

A CRAC uses a refrigeration compressor, commonly in a direct-expansion (DX) configuration, to cool the air. Heat is rejected through an air-cooled or water-cooled condenser. DX equipment can be installed as distributed units and may suit sites without a central chilled-water plant, but compressor staging, refrigerant circuits and condenser conditions affect part-load performance and maintenance requirements.

CRAH: chilled-water computer-room air handler

A CRAH is a special-purpose air handler that uses a chilled-water coil rather than an integral refrigeration compressor. Chillers, pumps and heat-rejection equipment provide the chilled water. This arrangement can centralize refrigeration and support large capacities, but it adds water-side equipment, controls and distribution that must be maintained and made resilient.

CRAC and CRAH comparison

Consideration CRAC (DX) CRAH (chilled water)
Heat-transfer arrangement Refrigeration cycle in or near the room unit; condenser rejects heat outdoors or to a water loop. Air passes over a chilled-water coil; a central chiller plant and heat-rejection system remove the heat.
Capacity and part-load behavior Capacity depends on compressor staging, refrigerant circuits and condenser conditions. Depends on chiller sequencing, chilled-water temperature and flow, pump control and coil performance.
Redundancy and maintainability Distributed units can provide modular capacity, but each unit’s compressor and refrigerant circuit require service. Resilience must cover chillers, pumps, valves, controls, piping and CRAH coils as well as the air handlers.
Climate and water constraints Air-cooled versions avoid condenser-water consumption but may lose efficiency at high outdoor temperatures. Water-cooled plants can be efficient but introduce water-treatment, tower and supply constraints.
Control complexity Room-level controls are relatively distributed; coordination is still needed for airflow and staging. Requires coordinated plant, water-side and room-air controls.
Best choice Not universally superior; suitability depends on site conditions and reliability goals. Not universally superior; suitability depends on site conditions and reliability goals.

ASHRAE lists Standard 127-2020 as a test method for rating cooling equipment serving data-center and other IT spaces. Use current standards and the project’s adopted code edition when comparing equipment or preparing procurement documents.

What does N+1 cooling redundancy mean?

N+1 means the installed capacity includes one additional capacity unit beyond the number required to meet the stated design load. If four identical units are required to carry the load, five may be installed so one can fail or be removed for planned work while the required capacity remains available. The label is meaningful only when the unit size, design condition, control sequence and covered failure are stated.

Redundancy is a topology, not a guarantee

A room may have N+1 CRAHs while a single chilled-water pump, electrical feeder, control panel or valve remains a common point of failure. Conversely, a plant may have multiple chillers but insufficient pipe or heat-rejection capacity during a component outage. Review the complete chain from power and controls through heat transfer and heat rejection.

ASHRAE’s HVAC Applications Handbook describes the maintainability objective this way: “This requires a design that allows any element in the power and cooling infrastructure to be shut down and removed from service for maintenance without compromising the computing systems that depend on that infrastructure.” That principle must be translated into a documented sequence of operations and tested failure scenarios; it is not a complete design specification.

Common redundancy approaches

  • Standby capacity: Spare units remain off or lightly loaded until a failure or planned maintenance event.
  • Distributed redundancy: Several smaller units share the load, reducing dependence on one large machine but increasing the number of components and controls.
  • Dual paths: Separate cooling or power paths serve the load, subject to the facility’s ability to prevent cross-dependency.
  • Hot standby: A standby element is ready to assume load with limited transition time. ASHRAE discusses hot standby as one strategy, not a universal prescription.

For each arrangement, record which failures are covered, how the transfer occurs, what alarms appear, and whether operators can isolate the failed element without taking the IT load outside its supported environmental range.

Does redundant cooling increase energy use?

It can. Extra chillers, pumps, air handlers or cooling towers may consume energy even when they are lightly loaded, and availability requirements can force equipment to operate at less efficient part-load points. DOE notes that high-availability and hyperscale designs often carry an energy cost for power and cooling redundancy.

The penalty is not a fixed percentage. It depends on whether standby equipment is off, warm, or running; how controls rotate equipment; minimum flow and turndown limits; and whether the plant can use economizer operation. Compare the measured sequence of operations at representative loads rather than assigning a generic redundancy surcharge.

How should airflow, temperature and humidity be controlled?

Cooling capacity is useful only when conditioned air reaches equipment inlets. Separate cold supply air from hot return air with containment, blanking panels, sealed openings and an airflow path that matches the rack layout. Reduce bypass air and recirculation, then balance supply volume so high-density rows receive the required flow.

Use a coordinated control strategy

  • Set supply temperature and humidity within the environmental range supported by the installed IT equipment and the applicable thermal guidance.
  • Control fan speed, chilled-water temperature and flow together; changing one setpoint can alter coil capacity, pump energy and rack inlet conditions.
  • Use economizers only when outdoor-air quality, humidity, temperature, filtration and contamination risks are acceptable.
  • Trend rack-inlet temperatures, return-air conditions, differential pressure, valve position, fan speed, chiller efficiency and alarms.
  • After a setpoint change, verify the worst-case rack inlets and the response of the redundancy sequence, not just the average room temperature.

The DOE 2024 guide cites up to 80°F as a maximum recommended IT inlet temperature for most equipment in its referenced thermal guidance. That figure is contextual, not a universal allowable limit for every server class, manufacturer or facility. Follow the equipment warranty and the adopted thermal guideline for the actual installation.

Which efficiency metrics should operators track?

Metric Calculation or meaning Use
PUE Total facility energy divided by IT-equipment energy. Shows how much overhead energy supports the IT load; trend it with the same boundary and metering method.
WUE Annual site water use divided by IT-equipment energy, expressed in liters per kilowatt-hour in DOE’s description. Shows water intensity and makes cooling-tower or evaporative-system impacts visible.
Cooling-system efficiency DOE’s 2024 guide gives 0.8 kW per ton as a good-practice benchmark and 0.6 kW per ton as a better benchmark. Use as guide values, not guarantees, mandates or apples-to-apples results across different system boundaries.

Improve efficiency by correcting airflow mixing, avoiding unnecessary overcooling, widening humidity deadbands where the IT envelope permits, raising chilled-water temperatures when capacity remains adequate, and using variable-speed drives and economizers appropriately. Measure the effect under comparable load and weather conditions. Savings and water reductions vary by facility.

How often should data-center HVAC be maintained?

There is no single interval that applies to every data center. Build the schedule from manufacturer requirements, commissioning records, operating procedures, risk assessment, applicable standards and the consequences of taking equipment offline. A maintenance calendar should distinguish inspection, cleaning, functional testing, calibration and major service.

Establish the operating baseline

  1. Capture normal temperatures, humidity, airflow, pressure, valve positions, fan speeds, chiller and compressor status, water chemistry and alarm states during commissioning.
  2. Define alarm limits and escalation paths for drift from that baseline.
  3. Review the baseline after major changes, recommissioning or a significant IT-load increase.
  4. Trend deviations so a failing actuator, fouled coil, blocked filter or refrigerant problem is addressed before a thermal event.

Document work and continuity controls

  • Maintain written procedures for routine operation, planned maintenance, abnormal conditions and alarm response.
  • Identify the equipment that must remain available, the isolation points, and the temporary capacity required before work starts.
  • Use a permit or change-control process for valve operation, control changes and software updates.
  • After work, verify flow, temperatures, alarms, automatic restart and the expected redundancy sequence.
  • Keep human responsibility for safety and operational decisions even when analytics or automation generate alerts.

An ASHRAE handbook example for a described water system calls for annual valve exercise followed by cleaning filters and strainers. That is an example for the specified system, not a universal annual schedule for every data-center HVAC installation. Cooling towers and evaporative systems also require site-specific water treatment, inspection and risk controls; local water constraints and building-water requirements apply.

What should operators check when temperatures rise?

  1. Confirm the measurement. Compare the alarm with calibrated rack-inlet sensors and the building-management-system point.
  2. Check airflow. Look for failed fans, closed dampers, blocked filters, missing blanking panels, open floor tiles in the wrong locations or containment leaks.
  3. Check cooling production. Verify chiller or compressor status, chilled-water temperature and flow, coil valves, refrigerant alarms and heat-rejection operation.
  4. Check redundancy response. Determine whether the standby unit started, whether the control sequence issued the correct command and whether a common electrical or control dependency prevented operation.
  5. Protect the IT load. Follow the documented abnormal-condition procedure, shed nonessential heat sources if authorized, and escalate before inlet temperatures exceed the equipment’s supported range.

How should a project team choose a cooling strategy?

Evaluate the alternatives against the same decision record: heat-transfer and heat-rejection arrangement; capacity and part-load behavior; failure coverage and maintainability; climate and air-quality conditions; water availability and treatment; operating energy; control complexity; and the resulting IT-inlet conditions. Include expansion stages and the maintenance method, not only the first-cost equipment list.

Have the design team document assumptions, single points of failure, alarm priorities, isolation boundaries, test scripts and acceptance criteria. Commission the plant at normal and degraded conditions, then preserve those results as the operating baseline. Revisit the strategy when rack density, IT technology, utility constraints or availability requirements change.

Bottom line for owners and operators

A dependable data-center HVAC system starts with an honest heat-load model, delivers air where the IT equipment needs it, and keeps enough independently maintainable capacity online for the defined failure cases. CRAC and CRAH are equipment arrangements rather than universal winners. N+1 is useful only when the complete cooling path and its controls support the stated outage. Track energy and water with consistent boundaries, and maintain the plant from commissioning-based baselines and documented procedures instead of copying a generic interval.
