A Cuisinart convection microwave can be a smart efficiency upgrade when you want microwave speed, oven-style browning, and fewer countertop appliances. The key is choosing the right format. In 2026, the main Cuisinart countertop convection microwave most homeowners ask about, the CMW-200, is listed by Cuisinart as discontinued, even though it still appears through some retailers and marketplaces. That changes the buying decision.
For most homes, the best Cuisinart option is one of three paths: buy remaining CMW-200 inventory if the price, warranty, and return policy are strong; choose a newer Cuisinart air-fryer or toaster-oven style appliance if you mainly want crisping and baking; or use a listed built-in microwave convection unit from another manufacturer when the kitchen design calls for cabinetry integration.

On our kitchen remodels, we treat these appliances less like gadgets and more like small kitchen systems. The appliance price might be $150 to $290, but the real cost can change fast if the homeowner wants it built in, moved to a new wall, added above a range, or placed where the existing circuit and clearances do not work.
Best Cuisinart Microwave Convection Choices in 2026
The honest answer is that Cuisinart does not have a deep lineup of true microwave convection ovens in the way some appliance brands do. The CMW-200 is the model most closely tied to the phrase “Cuisinart convection microwave.” It is a 1.2 cubic foot, 1000-watt countertop convection microwave oven with grill, a stainless interior, a 12-inch rotating glass tray, reversible grill rack, LCD touchpad controls, defrost by weight or time, convection bake and roast, grill mode, and nine preset options.
#1 Best Overall
- 9 Express Cook options: Quickly prepare everyday favorites with preset cooking modes for Popcorn, Potato, Pizza, Beverage, Dinner Plate, Fresh Vegetable, Frozen Vegetable, Roast Chicken, and Cake for added convenience and consistent results.
- Child Lock setting: Prevent unintended use and add extra safety with a built-in child lock feature that disables the control panel when activated.
- Touch pad controls: Easy-to-use touch pad controls provide a sleek design and simple operation for selecting cooking functions and settings.
- 4-digit LED display: Bright and clear LED display allows for easy viewing of cooking time, settings, and countdowns.
- Compact built-in dimensions: External dimensions without trim measure 20 1/2" W x 14 1/4" H x 18" D, making it ideal for space-saving installations.
That is a useful specification set for a countertop unit. A 12-inch turntable matters more in daily use than the 1.2 cubic foot rating alone because it tells you whether common dinner plates, shallow casseroles, and reheating containers will actually rotate. In our experience, many homeowners overfocus on cubic feet and under-measure the cookware they use every week.
The complication is lifecycle support. Cuisinart’s own product listing marks the CMW-200 as discontinued and out of stock. That does not automatically make it a bad buy, but it means you should think like a contractor buying a discontinued fixture: confirm who honors the warranty, check the return window, verify the accessory rack is included, and avoid paying a premium for a unit that may be harder to replace later.
Retail pricing visible in 2026 shows a wide spread. A Cuisinart 1.2 cubic foot countertop microwave with air fryer/convection-style functionality has appeared at about $149.99 from Target. Walmart has listed the Cuisinart 1.2 cubic foot 1000-watt microwave with reversible grill rack around $290. Lowe’s has listed the CMW-200 with a 4.0-star average from 321 reviews and a 73 percent recommendation rate, which is respectable but not flawless. That mixed owner experience is a reason to buy from a retailer with a straightforward return policy.

Quick Comparison: Which Cuisinart-Style Option Fits Your Kitchen?
The right choice depends less on brand loyalty and more on the job you need the appliance to do. A countertop convection microwave is a plug-in cooking station. An air-fryer toaster oven is often better for crisping and browning but does not replace microwave reheating. A true built-in microwave convection appliance is a kitchen design decision, not just a countertop purchase.
| Option | Best For | Typical 2026 Cost | Construction Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cuisinart CMW-200 countertop convection microwave | Small households, apartments, kitchenettes, break rooms, ADUs | About $290 where still available | Requires countertop clearance, one open side, and a grounded receptacle. Not for over-range installation. |
| Cuisinart microwave with air fryer/convection-style features | Budget buyers who want microwave reheating plus crisping features | About $150 from major retailers | Confirm exact model functions before buying; naming can vary by retailer. |
| Cuisinart 10-in-1 air fryer toaster oven | Homeowners who mainly bake, toast, roast, and air fry | Reported launch price around $249.95 | Not a microwave replacement. Better as a small oven substitute. |
| Listed built-in convection microwave or microwave drawer | Custom kitchens, high-end remodels, clean cabinet integration | Installed cost often $500 to $2,500 or more | Requires cabinet planning, trim compatibility, outlet placement, ventilation clearance, and possible permit review. |
What the CMW-200 Does Well
The CMW-200’s value is practical cooking efficiency. It can microwave leftovers, defrost by weight or time, convection bake, roast, and use a grill feature. The combination of microwave and convection is useful when you want speed without the soft texture that straight microwave cooking can leave behind.
For example, reheating a slice of casserole or roasting a small portion of vegetables can be more satisfying in a convection microwave than in a standard microwave. You can use microwave energy to reduce cooking time and convection heat to improve surface texture. That does not mean every meal uses less electricity than every other method, but it often avoids preheating a 30-inch range oven for one tray of food.
We see the biggest payoff in compact living situations: accessory dwelling units, basement suites, office kitchens, pool houses, apartments, and remodels where a second full oven is hard to justify. It is also useful during phased kitchen renovations because a countertop unit can keep a household functioning while the main range wall is under construction.

Where It Falls Short
A 1.2 cubic foot appliance is not a replacement for a full oven. It will not handle large sheet-pan dinners, holiday cooking, oversized bakeware, or multiple racks of food. It also needs disciplined placement. If the countertop is tight and the homeowner keeps pushing the appliance into a corner under wall cabinets, performance and longevity can suffer.
The discontinued status also matters. With current-production appliances, replacement parts, matching accessories, and warranty pathways are usually cleaner. With a discontinued microwave, we would only recommend buying if the price is reasonable, the seller is reputable, and the return period gives you time to test every mode.

Clearance, Countertop Placement, and Heat Safety
The CMW-200 manual calls for placement on a level countertop surface with at least 12 inches of clearance above the unit, at least 3 inches to adjacent walls, one side open, the feet left in place, and intake and outlet vents unobstructed. Those dimensions are not suggestions to ignore after unboxing. Convection cooking creates heat, and the appliance needs airflow.
We also plan landing space next to any convection appliance. Hot cookware coming out of a convection microwave needs a heat-safe surface within arm’s reach. In a small kitchenette, that may mean adding a stone remnant, stainless counter section, butcher-block landing zone, or heat-rated trivet area rather than setting hot dishes on laminate seams or painted millwork.
Do not install the CMW-200 over a range cooktop or another heat-producing appliance. The manual warns against that type of placement because heat exposure can damage the oven and affect warranty coverage. This is one of the most common homeowner mistakes: assuming a countertop microwave can be adapted into an over-the-range appliance. It cannot unless the manufacturer lists it for that installation.
Built-In Look vs True Built-In Installation
A countertop Cuisinart convection microwave is not the same thing as a listed built-in microwave. That distinction matters for safety, warranty, and inspection. A built-in appliance is designed with required clearances, trim kits, vent paths, and installation instructions. A countertop unit depends on open-air cooling around the cabinet.
If a homeowner wants a built-in look, we price the full assembly before anyone buys the appliance. That includes the microwave, trim kit if available, cabinet opening, finished side panels, receptacle location, ventilation clearance, and service access. Trying to force a countertop unit into a cabinet can trap heat and create a service problem later.
For custom kitchens, a true built-in convection microwave, microwave drawer, or speed oven is usually the cleaner answer. It costs more upfront, but it protects the cabinetry investment. Cabinet modifications alone can erase the savings from using a cheaper countertop appliance.

The appliance is only one line item. A countertop Cuisinart may cost $150 to $290, but installation scope can range from essentially no labor to several thousand dollars if the work becomes electrical, cabinetry, ventilation, and finish repair.
| Project Type | Typical 2026 Cost Range | What Usually Drives the Price |
|---|---|---|
| Basic countertop replacement | About $150 on average, mostly appliance cost | Existing grounded receptacle, no cabinet work, no installation labor beyond setup |
| Professional microwave installation labor | $122 to $255 national average | Labor market, appliance type, mounting difficulty, haul-away |
| General microwave installation labor | $100 to $400 | Simple replacement versus new location |
| Over-the-range replacement | $100 to $300 labor; broader installed range often $250 to $1,200 | Mounting bracket, vent alignment, cabinet condition, electrical connection |
| Built-in microwave installation | $220 to $580 labor; broader installed range often $500 to $2,500 | Trim kit, cabinet opening, outlet location, finish carpentry |
| Microwave drawer | About $1,260 to $2,430 installed | Cabinet base modification, dedicated space, electrical planning |
| High-end built-in convection microwave | Can approach $5,000 | Premium appliance, grill/sensor features, cabinetry, electrical, finish work |
Homewyse’s May 2026 project-style estimate starts around $623 to $1,223 per microwave oven installation, which better reflects jobs where a crew is mobilized, materials are handled, and conditions vary. That is why a quick appliance swap and a remodel installation should not be compared as if they are the same job.
The main cost drivers are countertop versus built-in format, whether a new or dedicated circuit is needed, GFCI or AFCI protection requirements, outlet location, cabinet modifications, trim kits, ventilation changes, wall repair, local electrician and carpenter rates, permit fees, disposal, and whether the old appliance was hardwired or plug-connected.

Electrical, Code, and Permit Notes
A 1000-watt microwave is not a tiny load. In many kitchens, the question is not only whether the appliance turns on, but whether the circuit is appropriate for the kitchen’s total use. Coffee makers, toaster ovens, air fryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and microwaves can create nuisance tripping or overloaded circuits when a kitchen has grown appliance by appliance without electrical planning.
During remodels, we ask the electrician to evaluate circuit capacity, receptacle location, GFCI protection, AFCI protection, and the local authority having jurisdiction. Code requirements vary by adopted NEC edition and local amendments. Some jurisdictions are quicker to adopt new rules than others, and kitchen receptacle requirements have changed over time. Do not assume a 1990s kitchen layout is acceptable for a 2026 remodel.
Permits also vary by city and county. A plug-in countertop microwave on an existing compliant receptacle usually does not trigger a permit by itself. Moving an outlet, adding a circuit, modifying an over-the-range vent, opening walls, or changing cabinetry as part of a larger kitchen remodel may require permits and inspections. The practical rule is simple: once wiring, venting, or built-in cabinetry is involved, ask before work starts.
When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro
DIY is reasonable for a countertop Cuisinart convection microwave when you have a level counter, the required clearances, an existing grounded receptacle, enough landing space, and no plan to enclose the unit. The setup should take less than an hour: unpack, inspect for shipping damage, wash the removable glass tray and rack, confirm the feet are intact, place it with 12 inches overhead clearance and 3 inches at nearby walls, and test microwave, convection, and grill functions while still inside the return window.
Hire a pro when the appliance is going into a cabinet wall, above a range, on a shelf near heat sources, or into a rental unit where code compliance and liability matter. Also hire a pro if the outlet is missing, loose, ungrounded, shared with too many high-draw appliances, or located where the cord would be pinched or stretched.

For over-the-range work, we want at least two qualified people on site because the appliance is awkward, heavy, and mounted above finished surfaces. For built-in work, a carpenter and electrician may both be needed. If exterior venting is involved, the scope can expand to duct routing, roof or wall penetration, flashing, siding repair, and makeup air considerations in tighter homes.

Convection microwave efficiency is mostly about workflow. You save time by using the microwave function for speed and convection heat for browning. You save space by reducing duplicate appliances. You may save energy on small meals by avoiding a full-size oven preheat, but the exact savings depend on recipe, cook time, appliance wattage, and how often you use it.
For better results, preheat the convection mode when the recipe depends on oven-like browning. Use combination cooking for foods that benefit from speed plus texture. Avoid overcrowding the rack or turntable because blocked airflow weakens the convection benefit. Keep the glass tray clean so it rotates smoothly, and do not use oversized pans that hit the cavity walls.
For reheating, lower power settings often beat full power. Dense leftovers heat more evenly when the center has time to catch up. For crisping, use the rack when the manual allows it, leave space around the food, and expect smaller batches to outperform crowded ones. A convection microwave is most impressive when used within its size limits.

Who Should Buy One
A Cuisinart countertop convection microwave makes sense for a homeowner who wants one compact appliance for reheating, defrosting, small-batch baking, roasting, and grilling. It is especially useful in small kitchens, ADUs, temporary remodel kitchens, basement bars, guest suites, office kitchens, and homes where the main oven is overkill for weekday meals.
It is not the right answer for a homeowner who wants a seamless built-in look without paying for proper cabinetry and electrical work. It is also not ideal for families that regularly cook full sheet pans, multiple trays, or large roasts. If the kitchen does not have the required clearance, do not buy the appliance and hope it works out. Heat problems rarely get better after the counter fills up with daily-use items.
Bottom Line for 2026 Buyers
The best Cuisinart convection microwave decision in 2026 is a practical one. If you find the CMW-200 at a fair price, with a clear return policy and warranty path, it can still be a useful 1.2 cubic foot, 1000-watt countertop appliance. Its 12-inch turntable, convection modes, grill feature, stainless interior, reversible rack, and preset cooking options make it more capable than a basic microwave.
But if you mainly want crisping, roasting, toasting, and air frying, a newer Cuisinart air-fryer toaster oven may be the more current appliance. If you want the microwave integrated into cabinetry, skip countertop workarounds and price a listed built-in, drawer, or speed-oven solution with the electrical and cabinet work included.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Cuisinart CMW-200 still available in 2026?
Cuisinart lists the CMW-200 as discontinued and out of stock, but some retailers and marketplaces still show remaining inventory. Verify the seller, warranty, included rack, condition, and return period before buying.
Can a Cuisinart countertop convection microwave be built into a cabinet?
A countertop model should not be enclosed unless the manufacturer specifically lists it for built-in installation. The CMW-200 requires open countertop clearances, including 12 inches above, 3 inches near walls, one open side, and unobstructed vents.
How much does microwave installation cost in 2026?
A simple countertop setup may cost little beyond the $150 to $290 appliance price. Professional installation commonly runs $122 to $255 for basic work, while built-in installations can range from about $500 to $2,500 or more depending on cabinetry, wiring, trim, and ventilation.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDoes a convection microwave need a dedicated circuit?
It depends on the appliance, kitchen layout, and local code. A 1000-watt microwave is a meaningful load, so during remodels an electrician should evaluate circuit capacity, GFCI/AFCI requirements, outlet location, and local code rules.
Is a convection microwave more efficient than a regular oven?
It is often more practically efficient for small meals because it can combine microwave speed with convection browning and avoid preheating a full-size oven. Actual energy savings vary by recipe, cook time, wattage, and household habits.
What is the difference between a Cuisinart convection microwave and a Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven?
A convection microwave can reheat and defrost with microwave energy while also baking or browning with convection heat. An air fryer toaster oven is better for crisping, roasting, and toasting, but it does not replace microwave reheating.
