If your Crock-Pot will not turn on, is not heating, or leaves food undercooked or overdone, start with the plug, outlet, cooking setting, timer, lid, and fill level. These checks avoid unnecessary repairs, but controls and safe-use instructions vary by model, so use your appliance’s manual for model-specific guidance.

Why won’t my Crock-Pot turn on?

  1. Make sure the plug is fully seated in the outlet.
  2. Test the outlet with a lamp or another device you know works.
  3. Check that you have selected a setting and cooking time correctly.

A Hamilton Beach manual recommends checking the plug and outlet when settings cannot be selected; these are useful first checks for slow cookers generally, not a diagnosis of every brand or model. If the outlet works but the cooker still does not respond, find the model number and consult its manual or the manufacturer’s support. Do not assume the cause is a failed component.

Why is my slow cooker not heating or is food still undercooked?

Check the setting, time, lid, and fill level

  • Use Low or High to cook. Warm is for holding cooked food, not for cooking it.
  • Confirm the recipe’s time matches the heat setting you selected.
  • Make sure the lid is seated as intended and the cooker is not substantially underfilled.

Crock-Pot recommends filling stoneware about one-half to three-quarters full for expected cooking times, subject to recipe exceptions. A Hamilton Beach manual notes that voltage variation and altitude can lengthen cooking; its guidance is model-specific, so allow for variation rather than assuming a universal time adjustment.

Limit lid lifting

Lifting the lid releases heat and can extend cooking time. Crock-Pot advises not removing the lid during the first two hours unless the recipe calls for it. Follow your recipe and the manual for your model rather than treating that advice as an absolute rule.

If the cooker remains cold despite a working outlet and correctly selected cooking setting, stop troubleshooting at external checks. The manufacturer information cited here does not establish a safe general procedure for opening or repairing a heating base. Consult the model manual or manufacturer support.

Why did my food overcook?

Look at how full the crock was, the heat setting and duration, and whether the food remained on Warm for an extended hold. Crock-Pot says a low fill can affect expected cooking time and recommends reducing cooking time when food will be held warm for a long time.

A Hamilton Beach manual advises checking a half-filled crock for doneness one to two hours earlier than the recipe time. That is guidance for its product context, not a universal adjustment; use your own manual and recipe.

Is a gap between the lid and crock normal?

A Crock-Pot support response on a product page describes an approximately 1/4-inch gap on newer models as intentional, to prevent steam pressure that could crack or shatter the lid. That statement is model-specific, not confirmation that every gap is normal. If the lid is damaged, the gap is much larger, or the cooker is not heating, check the exact model manual or contact support.

What should I do if the stoneware is cracked?

Stop using cracked stoneware. Crock-Pot warns against preheating the cooker and against sudden temperature changes to ceramic stoneware and the lid. For example, do not rinse hot stoneware with cold water. Let the cooker cool before cleaning.

If you need replacement stoneware, verify that the part fits your exact appliance model. Crock-Pot product information includes a model-specific example for a 7-quart cooker; it does not mean inserts are interchangeable. Check the model number and the manufacturer’s parts or support information before ordering.

How should I clean the cooker safely?

  1. Turn the cooker off, unplug it, and let it cool.
  2. Wash removable stoneware and the lid according to the instructions for your model. Avoid abrasive pads or cleaners if the manufacturer prohibits them.
  3. Do not immerse the heating base.

Crock-Pot says its removable inserts may be ovenproof and microwave safe, but not for use on a gas or electric burner or under a broiler. Do not assume that guidance applies to another brand or model; check its manual.

When should I contact support or consider replacement?

For persistent power or heating problems after checking the plug and outlet, use the model manual or contact the manufacturer. The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a general safe procedure for repairing internal wiring, controls, or a heating element, so do not open the base based on these checks alone.
