For routine mowing, leave short, evenly spread grass clippings on the lawn. They break down there and return nutrients to the soil. If you collect them, use dry clippings sparingly as garden mulch, compost them with dry leaves or straw, or check whether your local program accepts them. Remove clumps that could smother grass, keep clippings out of storm drains, and follow the herbicide label before using treated clippings around other plants.
Should you remove grass clippings after mowing?
Usually, no. University of Minnesota Extension says clippings about one inch or shorter can generally stay on the lawn. Mow regularly, and avoid cutting off more than one-third of the grass height at a time; this helps keep clippings short enough to filter down between grass blades. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach likewise says properly mowed clippings do not need to be removed or bagged.
Long or wet clippings may settle into dense clumps, shade the grass beneath them, and leave patches of damaged turf. If the grass has grown unusually tall, collect or rake up the excess rather than leaving a heavy layer behind. Spread the collected material elsewhere only if it is suitable for that use.
Does leaving clippings cause thatch?
No. University of Minnesota Extension explains that clippings decompose quickly and do not significantly contribute to thatch buildup. Thatch is not a reason by itself to bag clippings after routine mowing.

What can you do with collected grass clippings?
| Option | Best when | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Leave them on the lawn | Routine mowing produces short, evenly dispersed clippings. | Remove long or wet clumps; mowing regularly helps clippings settle into the turf. |
| Use them as garden mulch | You have dry clippings suitable for the garden and the applicable herbicide label allows that use. | Apply a thin layer, no more than one to two inches at a time. Thick or wet clippings can mat and smell. |
| Add them to home compost | You have a compost pile or bin and dry leaves or straw to mix in. | Combine the clippings with these dry materials; grass alone can mat and develop odors. |
| Use local compost collection | Home reuse is impractical. | Acceptance and preparation rules vary by provider, so check local requirements. |
How to use grass clippings as garden mulch
- Check the lawn’s herbicide history. Read the specific product label before using treated-lawn clippings around garden plants. Do not use them as mulch unless the label allows it.
- Let wet clippings dry. Wet material is more likely to mat into a dense layer.
- Spread a thin layer. Apply no more than one to two inches at a time. Avoid piling clippings against plant stems or laying down a thick blanket that blocks air and light.
If you have more clippings than the garden can use in a thin layer, compost the surplus with dry browns or check local collection options.
Can grass clippings go in compost?
Yes. Add clippings as a green material and mix them with dry browns such as leaves or straw. Grass alone tends to compact; a dense, wet mass may decompose without enough air and develop an unpleasant odor. Mixing in dry material helps keep the pile from matting.

When should you bag clippings or use a mulching mower?
Collect clippings when the grass is too long to leave as a light, dispersed layer, or when mowing has produced wet clumps that would smother the turf. A mulching mower chops clippings several times before they fall back onto the lawn, which can make returning them convenient. It is not required: Colorado State University Extension notes that any mower can return clippings when the lawn is mowed often enough.

How should you choose a clipping-disposal option?
- Clipping condition and volume: Short, dispersed clippings suit the lawn; dry excess can work as a thin mulch layer; larger amounts can go into compost if you have browns to mix in.
- Available space: Consider whether you have a garden, compost area, or neither.
- Herbicide use: Check the specific product label before moving treated clippings into a garden.
- Local rules: If you cannot reuse the material at home, ask your local compost or yard-waste provider what it accepts and how clippings must be prepared. Collection is not available under identical rules everywhere.
Regardless of the destination, sweep clippings away from curbs and gutters so they do not enter storm drains. EPA guidance recommends community composting when home reuse is not an option, but local provider rules determine whether that route is available.
