A crane fly resembles an oversized mosquito, but adults do not bite or sting. The possible lawn pest is the larva, often called a leatherjacket: it can feed on grass roots and crowns and cause thinning patches. A flying adult alone is no reason to treat a yard; look for damaged turf and larvae, and consider local conditions before acting.

How to tell a crane fly from a mosquito

Adult crane flies have very long legs and a mosquito-like shape, but they are not blood-feeding mosquitoes. The University of California Statewide IPM Program says adults do not bite or sting. Their presence around the yard is usually a nuisance, not evidence that plants or people are being harmed.

The larvae are brown, legless, wormlike insects with tough skin, commonly called leatherjackets. UC ANR reports mature larvae measuring 1 to 1½ inches (2.5–3.8 cm); the page does not state a publication year. Finding larvae is more relevant to lawn health than counting adult flies.

Which part can damage the garden?

Larvae—not adults—are the potentially damaging stage. UC IPM says they feed on grass roots, crowns, and aboveground portions of grass plants. Affected turf may thin or develop dying patches. Some crane fly species feed on decaying thatch or other organic matter, while species such as European and common or marsh crane flies can feed on living turf, so an adult sighting does not identify a damaging species or prove an infestation.

The best-supported concern is turfgrass rather than garden plants generally. The available extension guidance focuses on lawns; it does not establish that crane flies broadly damage vegetable beds, ornamental borders, or all garden plants.

When crane flies are a lawn pest

Risk depends on species, region, turf condition, and the number of larvae. California guidance reports damaging levels primarily in Humboldt and Del Norte counties and says crane flies do not appear to be a turfgrass problem in warmer inland parts of the state. Cool-season turfgrass is susceptible. Oregon State Extension describes European crane fly damage to lawns in the Pacific Northwest. These are regional observations, not a nationwide map of risk.

Guidance Larval count and context
UC IPM, California Damage may occur at as few as 15 larvae per square foot in unthrifty turf; well-maintained turf may tolerate 40. Publication year is not stated on the page. These figures are California guidance, not a universal threshold.
Oregon State University Extension, Pacific Northwest More than 25 larvae per square foot is used as an action trigger for well-maintained turf. Publication year is not stated in the search result; this is regional guidance, not a universal rule.

How to check thinning turf for leatherjackets

Inspect where grass is thinning rather than treating based on adult flies. Leatherjackets may be in the thatch and soil just beneath the grass. UC IPM recommends spring monitoring after weather has warmed, generally around March, and describes these sampling options:

  • Cut a 6-by-6-inch turf section about 1–2 inches deep, inspect it for larvae, and multiply the count by four to estimate larvae per square foot.
  • Use a four-inch cup cutter to take a turf sample; multiply the larval count by 11.5 to estimate larvae per square foot.

Oregon State Extension gives homeowners a simpler check: cut a one-foot-square section of sod about one inch deep, turn it over, and inspect for larvae. Its more-than-25-per-square-foot action trigger applies to well-maintained turf in that regional guidance. In either method, interpret the count alongside actual injury and lawn vigor.

What to do if larvae and damage are present

Improve the conditions that weaken turf

Start with maintenance and site conditions. UC ANR and UC IPM recommend practices such as proper irrigation and fertilization, reducing excess thatch, and aerifying to encourage root growth and improve water and nutrient movement. UC IPM also recommends adequate nitrogen, improved drainage in chronically wet areas, reduced irrigation where appropriate, and reseeding bare patches. UC ANR suggests reducing shade where appropriate. These measures support turf resilience; they are not a guarantee that larvae will disappear.

Consider biological suppression cautiously

Beneficial nematodes may help reduce high larval populations. UC IPM says drenches with Steinernema feltiae may provide up to 50% reduction if properly applied. Treat that as possible suppression, not a promised result; suitability and application depend on conditions.

Use other controls only with local guidance

Oregon State Extension discusses insecticide use for European crane fly in its regional setting and puts cultural practices first. If considering a pesticide, follow the product label and local extension guidance for the pest, site, timing, and application. The available guidance does not establish a treatment that works everywhere.

How to decide whether action is warranted

  • Adults present, no turf injury: do not infer a lawn infestation from the flies alone.
  • Thinning turf, larvae not checked: inspect the thatch and shallow soil in affected areas before choosing a response.
  • Larvae present, lawn still vigorous: interpret counts in the context of regional guidance and turf condition; a count alone is not a universal mandate to treat.
  • Larvae present with thinning or dying patches: address drainage, moisture, thatch, and turf care, then consult local extension recommendations about further control.
