Could Engineered Yeast Help Build Shelters on Mars?

A laboratory study tested a sand-based binder made with gelatin and engineered yeast under selected simulated Martian conditions. It is a research material, not a ready-to-use shelter.

Engineered yeast is part of a laboratory-tested building material that could one day help make construction components on Mars. The material is not ordinary cement and is not a ready-made shelter: the 2026 study combined sand with a hybrid gelatin-and-engineered-yeast binder, then printed a scaled-down structure under selected simulated Martian conditions.

What “yeast cement” actually is

“Yeast cement” is a shorthand for a living building material, not Portland cement. In the 2026 study by Liu and colleagues, inert sand was bound with an adhesive made from gelatin and engineered yeast. The yeast is part of the binder system; it does not turn the sand into a conventional cement mixture.

The researchers printed a scaled-down structure in laboratory conditions chosen to represent aspects of Mars: a pressure of 0.01 atm and a temperature of −30°C. This demonstrates fabrication under those selected conditions, not construction on Mars or performance in the full Martian environment. Read the study by Liu and colleagues.

What the laboratory results show

The paper reports mean compressive strength of approximately 12 MPa and mean flexural strength of approximately 6 MPa for the tested material. These are results for the study’s specimens and methods; they do not establish how tall a structure could be, whether people could safely occupy it, or whether it could serve as a complete habitat.

The authors also estimate that fabrication energy demand was one to two orders of magnitude lower than representative heat-processing routes. That comparison applies within the processing boundary they defined. It is not an all-in accounting of lifecycle, resource extraction, transport, habitat systems, or mission energy.

The study reports retained mechanical performance through four remanufacturing cycles. That is a promising finding for reuse, but it does not establish indefinite recyclability, repair performance in the field, or a closed-loop manufacturing process on Mars.

What still has to be solved before it could shelter people

A construction material is only one part of a habitat. The study does not show that the printed material can retain breathable pressure, provide validated radiation protection, or maintain safe conditions for occupants over time. Those functions would require an engineered habitat envelope and supporting systems.

  • Binder and feedstocks: The optimized recipe uses Earth-derived porcine gelatin and externally supplied microbial nutrients. The paper discusses a gelatin-free formulation as a way to reduce imported inputs, but that possibility is not evidence of a self-sufficient Mars production system.
  • Mechanical and environmental performance: Direct tensile strength, permeability, thermal conductivity, radiation tolerance, and long-term durability remain to be established.
  • Scale and production: Full-scale fabrication, autonomous construction, and the material and energy requirements of an operational process are open engineering questions.
  • Habitat integration: Pressure-retaining membranes, resource-recovery systems, and planetary-protection measures would need to work alongside any biological building material.

How this differs from NASA’s mycelium work

NASA’s Mycotecture Off Planet project explores fungal mycelium—the filamentous network of a fungus—as a possible construction composite. That is a separate biological-construction approach from the engineered yeast and gelatin binder in the 2026 study. NASA has described prototype development, testing in planetary-simulator environments, radiation-protection investigations, and habitat design work; these activities do not demonstrate that either technology is ready for a mission.

In 2024, NASA reported a $2 million, two-year Phase III NIAC award for continued Mycotecture Off Planet development. Its Phase II final report describes work on biological strains, fabrication processes, prototypes, strength characterization, and a Mars mission architecture. Those milestones provide context for the wider field, but they are not head-to-head tests against the yeast-based material. NASA’s Mycotecture Off Planet project page and the NASA announcement of the Phase III award describe the fungal project; the Phase II final report record provides further project details.

What the result means for Mars construction

The study is evidence that a sand-based material using engineered biology can be printed at small scale under selected Mars-relevant pressure and temperature conditions, with mechanical properties measured in the laboratory. It also raises practical questions about imported ingredients, energy accounting, durability, scale, and habitat integration. The authors describe the work as demonstrating the “potential of bio-fabrication in future extraterrestrial construction”; potential is the right scope for the claim.
