Cottesloe Beach Pylon: What the 2025 Damage Report Says About Access

PerthNow reported in July 2025 that damage to the Cottesloe Beach pylon’s base led to an access restriction. The report did not give a repair or reopening date, and it does not confirm the structure’s status today.

A report published on 23 July 2025 said Cottesloe Beach’s offshore pylon had been taken off-limits after an inspection found damage to its base. That is the latest pylon-specific status in the sources available here—not confirmation that the structure remains closed in October 2026. The Town of Cottesloe asked visitors not to climb it for safety reasons.

What the inspection report said

PerthNow reported on 23 July 2025 that an inspection had found damage at the pylon’s base. The story described a large chunk as apparently split off and rusted over, and said the inspection report identified sections that needed repair or replacement. The inspection report itself was not available in the cited sources, so those details are attributable to PerthNow’s account rather than an independently reviewed engineering diagnosis.

At the time, the Town was considering next steps. The article did not give a confirmed repair scope, budget, contractor, schedule, completion date or reopening date, nor did it report a final choice between repair and replacement. PerthNow’s 23 July 2025 report is the source for the closure-era account.

Can you climb or dive from it now?

The Town’s safety request quoted by PerthNow was: “The Town does ask that community members and visitors to Cottesloe beach do not attempt to climb the pylon for safety reasons.” The report placed the pylon about 80 metres offshore within the shark enclosure. It described the pylon as off-limits when published, but the available sources do not establish its access status today. Check current Town of Cottesloe notices or ask the Town before visiting; do not treat the 2025 report as a current access bulletin.

Why the pylon matters

The concrete pylon was built in 1936 as part of a shark-proof enclosure scheme that was never completed. It survived as a Cottesloe landmark and is recognized for its cultural heritage significance. The Heritage Council describes it as the only remaining element of that unfinished scheme and notes its strong community attachment.

The Town’s April 2019 conservation management plan records significant repairs below the waterline in January 2019, supported in part by community contributions. PerthNow separately reported that community-funded work in 2019 restored part of the platform. These accounts refer to repairs in the same year, but the sources do not establish that they describe identical work.

What remains unknown

The reported damage prompted a safety restriction in July 2025, but the available sources do not verify whether repairs or replacement proceeded, whether a final decision was made, or whether public access has since changed. A later Town update specific to the pylon was not located in the available source set. Any claim about its present condition or reopening would therefore go beyond what these sources establish.
