The copper-colored façade at The Forge in Long Island City is not solid copper. It is an aluminum wall-panel system finished with Linetec’s proprietary copper anodize, supplied by Dri-Design (now represented in the company’s expanded AR-C collection). The finish uses copper to color the aluminum while isolating it in the coating, so Linetec says it keeps a copper appearance instead of developing the green patina associated with exposed copper.
The project combines more than 92,000 square feet of copper-anodized panels with a smaller area of Black Iron-painted panels. Its documented single-skin, pressure-equalized rainscreen and reported NFPA 285 compliance are project-source claims that still require verification against the current tested assembly, code edition, substrates and details used on any new building.

What was installed at The Forge?
The Forge is a 272-unit residential tower in Long Island City, New York. FXCollaborative designed the building; Dri-Design supplied the aluminum panels; and Linetec provided the copper anodized finish. Design discussions began in 2013, and the project case study says the building opened in spring 2018.
According to the 2018 Building Enclosure case study, the façade includes more than 92,000 square feet of Dri-Design panels in copper anodize and 4,800 square feet of panels painted Black Iron. Those quantities describe this building’s envelope, not a standard order size or a rule of thumb for other projects.

Dri-Design’s current website presents its expanded panel collection as AR-C, while historical coverage of The Forge uses the Dri-Design name. When reviewing current submittals, confirm which collection name, profile, attachment hardware and finish specification apply to the proposed job.
What is copper anodized aluminum?
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that forms a controlled oxide layer on aluminum. In this case, Linetec describes a proprietary process that uses actual copper to color the aluminum and isolates that copper within the finish. The result is still an aluminum panel: the copper is part of the color-producing finish, not a thick sheet of copper attached to the wall.
That distinction affects appearance, detailing and expectations. A copper-anodized aluminum panel does not behave like solid copper roofing or sheet metal. It does not acquire the same weathered surface, and its structural, thermal and handling characteristics must be designed as an aluminum rainscreen panel system.
Does it turn green?
Linetec says its proprietary copper anodize is intended to maintain its initial copper color without developing patina. The company also says the finish does not need a clear coat or ongoing treatment to maintain color stability. These are Linetec’s stated product characteristics, not an independent performance conclusion for every copper-colored anodized finish on the market.
“Copper-colored” therefore should not be used as a blanket promise about all anodized products. Confirm the exact finish designation, warranty language, color-control procedure and care requirements in the project submittal.
Why the façade shows natural variation
The Forge was designed to have variation from panel to panel rather than a perfectly uniform copper field. Tyler Fowler of Dri-Design explained: “The natural variation that is expressed on the façade through the copper anodizing process was a desired look.” On this project, that variation is a design feature, not evidence of random paint failure or premature weathering.

Aluminum alloy, temper, panel batch, viewing angle and light can all influence how an anodized surface reads. Linetec cautions that different aluminum material types in one job—such as break metal, extrusions and panels—will not color the same. A trim piece made from a different alloy can therefore look noticeably lighter, darker or differently toned beside the field panels even when the nominal color name is identical.
Sample and mockup procedure
- Define the acceptable range. State in the design documents whether variation is desired, limited or unacceptable, and identify which elevations are expected to read as a continuous field.
- Review production-representative samples. Request multiple panels, not a single small chip. Include the proposed panel alloy, finish, directionality and any perforation or formed edge that could change the appearance.
- Build a façade mockup. Place panels with the proposed trims, flashings, windows and adjacent materials under daylight and nighttime lighting. Review from the distances at which residents, pedestrians and neighboring buildings will see the work.
- Record approval. Photograph the approved mockup, document the range of acceptable tones and identify the party authorized to judge replacement panels during fabrication and installation.
How the documented wall system works
The project material describes the Dri-Design assembly as a single piece of aluminum rather than a metal composite panel. It also reports dry joints with no joint sealants or gaskets, and characterizes the wall as a pressure-equalized rainscreen. In that approach, the outer panels shed most rain while the drained and ventilated cavity behind them helps manage water that reaches the secondary plane.
The same project/manufacturer material reports NFPA 285 compliance. That statement belongs to the tested assembly and configuration described in the source; it is not automatic approval for every insulation, air barrier, sheathing, attachment pattern or panel size. Current code officials and design professionals must match the proposed build-up to a current test report or other accepted compliance path for the building’s jurisdiction.
What must be checked for a new project
- Current panel profile, thickness, alloy and finish designation.
- Substrate type, cavity depth, clips or fasteners, and movement joints.
- Wind pressures, corner and parapet zones, seismic movement where applicable, and the engineer’s attachment design.
- Air, water and vapor-control layers behind the rainscreen, including transitions at windows, balconies and roof edges.
- Fire-resistance documentation for the complete wall build-up, not just an individual panel.
- Current installation instructions, warranty terms and approved repair details.
Panel size, weight and attachment information
An ArchDaily product catalog entry lists a panel weight of less than 2 pounds per square foot and provides recommended maximum panel-size guidance that varies with panel proportions. Those figures are catalog orientation, not an independent test or a substitute for the manufacturer’s current engineering data. The actual allowable format depends on panel dimensions, support spacing, wind load, substrate and attachment details.
Recommended Free Tools
The catalog describes dry-joint installation and attachment to several substrate types. Before placing an order, have the manufacturer and project engineer confirm the current maximum dimensions, fastener schedule, edge conditions, tolerances and required cavity or support geometry. A panel that fits a catalog proportion may still be unsuitable at a high-pressure corner, around a large opening or on a different substrate.
How this finish compares with other façade choices
No single cladding is universally better. The useful comparison is how each option answers the project’s appearance, color, weight, evidence and maintenance requirements.

1. Establish the design intent
Decide whether the façade should read as a consistent copper tone or show controlled variation like The Forge. Put that decision in the finish schedule and mockup requirements. Identify all locations where anodized panels meet extrusions, brake metal, louvers or other aluminum so the team can assess color differences early.

Obtain the manufacturer’s current AR-C or other applicable system literature, finish designation, alloy information, panel profiles and warranty. Historical project references are useful for design intent but do not replace current technical submittals.
3. Engineer the build-up
Coordinate panel dimensions, wind and seismic loads, substrate, clips, fasteners, cavity, drainage paths and movement joints. Ask for details at windows, corners, parapets, base conditions and transitions to the Black Iron-painted areas used at The Forge.
4. Verify fire and moisture performance
Review the current tested wall assembly or accepted engineering analysis for the exact insulation, sheathing, air barrier and panel arrangement. Confirm water-management details, pressure-equalization paths and interfaces with adjacent trades. Do not rely on the project’s reported NFPA 285 result if the proposed build-up differs.
5. Approve samples and mockups
Inspect a broad sample set and a full mockup under realistic lighting. Approve the relationship between field panels and accessories in writing, including the acceptable range of anodized variation.

6. Plan fabrication and delivery
Confirm shop drawings, piece marks, sequencing, protection during transport and storage, replacement-panel procedures and inspection points. Current lead times and pricing are not established in the available project sources, so obtain them directly from the supplier for the specific order.
7. Inspect installation
Check substrate readiness, attachment locations, joint alignment, cavity continuity, flashing and transitions before areas are closed. Keep approved samples and mockup photographs on site so the team can distinguish intentional color variation from damage, contamination or an incorrect component.
Maintenance and long-term expectations
Linetec states that its proprietary copper anodize does not require a clear coat or continuing treatment to maintain color stability. That does not eliminate routine façade inspection. Building owners should still follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance, inspect joints and flashings, look for impact damage or construction residue and maintain sealants or adjacent materials where those materials are part of the overall wall—even though the documented panel joints themselves are described as dry.
Cleaning methods should be confirmed for the exact finish. Abrasive pads, strong chemicals or unapproved touch-up coatings can change gloss and color. Keep records of the approved finish, installation date, cleaning products and any replacement panels so future work can be matched to the original appearance range.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling it copper cladding: Describe it accurately as aluminum with a copper-colored anodized finish. That prevents incorrect assumptions about patina, weight and metal compatibility.
- Approving one color chip: Use multiple production-representative panels and a mockup because natural variation was part of The Forge’s design intent.
- Assuming trims will match: Review panels, extrusions and brake metal together; Linetec warns that different aluminum material types color differently.
- Reusing a fire claim without checking the assembly: Verify current documentation for the exact wall layers, attachments and jurisdiction.
- Treating catalog dimensions as engineering limits: Confirm current size, load and substrate guidance with the manufacturer and project engineer.
- Ordering before nomenclature is settled: Reconcile historical Dri-Design references with the current AR-C collection and the finish code shown in the submittal.
What The Forge demonstrates—and what it does not
The Forge demonstrates how a large residential tower can use a copper-colored aluminum rainscreen to achieve a warm metallic identity without specifying solid copper or a patinating surface. Its documented quantities, intentional variation and reported system characteristics provide a useful precedent for design conversations.
It does not establish a universal panel weight, maximum size, maintenance interval, price, lead time or fire rating for every project. Those values depend on the current product, wall build-up, location, loads, code requirements and procurement package. Treat the project as a case study, then re-validate every technical item before construction.
