The Orbita Pendant from Optique Lighting is a modular lighting system built for projects where the fixture’s length, configuration and beam direction may need to be adjusted to suit the space. Its light engines and optics rotate 360 degrees, allowing the installer or designer to choose direct, indirect or intermediate light direction during field setup.
The product article published by Buildings on November 4, 2024, describes four segment lengths—12, 18, 24 and 36 inches—with up to three segments, four color-temperature choices and two finishes. Those details make Orbita worth evaluating for adaptable architectural lighting, but they do not establish price, photometric performance, installation requirements, availability or suitability for a particular project.

Orbita is presented as a pendant with a modular construction rather than a single fixed-length body. The specified segments can be combined into configurations selected for a project’s dimensions and visual requirements. The product description says the design allows customization of lengths and configurations to meet specific project requirements.
That flexibility matters in construction because the lighting plan is often coordinated with ceilings, structure, furniture, signage and mechanical services that change as a project develops. A configurable pendant can give the design team more control than a fixture that is available in only one overall size. It can also make it possible to maintain a consistent fixture family while adapting individual locations to different conditions.

Orbita’s other defining feature is aimability. The light engines and optics are described as rotating through 360 degrees. In practical terms, the light can be directed downward for direct illumination, upward or toward a surface for indirect illumination, or positioned between those extremes for a blended effect. The article describes this selection as something users can make in the field, rather than an adjustment that must be permanently fixed at the design stage.
How the modular length system works
Available segment sizes
| Segment length | What the specification establishes |
|---|---|
| 12 inches | One of the listed Orbita segment lengths |
| 18 inches | One of the listed Orbita segment lengths |
| 24 inches | One of the listed Orbita segment lengths |
| 36 inches | One of the listed Orbita segment lengths |
Up to three segments may be used in a configuration, according to the product article. The published information does not provide a complete ordering matrix showing every permitted combination, a maximum overall length, connector details or the weight of each configuration. Do not assume that every mathematical combination of the four segment sizes is an orderable assembly. Before drawings are issued, ask the manufacturer or lighting supplier for the current configuration schedule and dimensional drawings.

Why segment count affects coordination
Segment count changes more than the visual length. It can affect the fixture’s overall dimensions, suspension points, power or control coordination and the way the pendant sits in relation to nearby architectural elements. Those consequences are project-specific and are not quantified in the 2024 product article.
For a reflected-ceiling plan or a detailed interior elevation, document the intended segment sizes and their order rather than specifying only an overall visual length. Confirm how the sections join, where the canopy or suspension hardware is located, and whether the selected assembly requires a particular ceiling box or structural support. These are coordination questions to resolve with current technical documentation, not assumptions to make from the segment list alone.
Direct, indirect and intermediate light direction
Direct lighting
A direct setting sends the fixture’s light toward the occupied or task area. It may be appropriate when the design goal is to illuminate a table, counter, circulation route or other defined surface. The 360-degree rotation gives the design team a way to orient the light engine and optic toward the intended target during field setup.

Indirect lighting
An indirect setting directs light toward a ceiling or another reflecting surface. The resulting appearance depends on the reflectance, geometry and color of that surface, as well as the fixture’s actual output and distribution. Orbita’s feature description establishes the ability to select an indirect direction; it does not provide illuminance levels, ceiling-wash data or a photometric file.
Intermediate positions
The optic can also be positioned between direct and indirect orientations. This can be useful when a project needs some surface illumination without aiming the entire output straight down, or when the designer wants to balance visual comfort and reflected light. The right angle must be determined from the room geometry and confirmed through the project’s lighting calculations or an on-site mock-up.
Rotation should not be treated as proof that a fixture can be re-aimed indefinitely after handover. The article says the direction can be selected in the field, but it does not define an operating adjustment mechanism, a locking method, maintenance procedure or a post-installation aiming policy. Confirm those details before relying on future re-aiming as part of the design strategy.
Color temperature and finish choices
| Option type | Choices reported for Orbita |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K, 3000K, 3500K and 4200K |
| Finish | Matte black and satin brass |
Choosing a color temperature
The listed color temperatures span warm residential-style light through a cooler appearance commonly used in more neutral commercial environments. The product article does not state color-rendering metrics, dimming behavior, lumen output, tolerance, spectral information or whether every temperature is available in every length and configuration.
Select the color temperature in relation to the project’s other luminaires, finishes and use. A space with several fixture families should be checked for visible color mismatch, especially where pendants and recessed or linear fixtures are seen together. Request the current specification sheet and a sample or mock-up when the exact appearance matters.

Choosing a finish
Matte black and satin brass provide two distinct visual directions: one subdued and graphic, the other warmer and more decorative. The article lists these finishes but does not state coating technology, environmental rating, cleaning instructions, custom-color availability or whether the finish changes lead time. Those points should be confirmed with the supplier before the finish is written into a finish schedule.
Compliance claims and the documents to verify
The Buildings product article reports that the Orbita family is UL listed, Title 24 compliant and RoHS compliant. These are claims reported in that 2024 article, not a substitute for current project documentation.
Compliance can depend on the exact model, driver, control package, installation method and jurisdiction. For a construction submittal, obtain the current listing information, product certification, installation instructions and any California energy-compliance documentation that applies to the selected configuration. Confirm that the documents identify the exact fixture and not merely the broader product family.
- Check the current certification or listing reference for the specified model.
- Confirm whether the proposed driver and control equipment are included in the listed assembly.
- Verify Title 24 requirements with the project’s electrical designer or energy consultant for the applicable California project.
- Request the current RoHS statement if the project’s procurement or owner standards require it.
- Keep the dated documents in the submittal record so later substitutions can be checked against the approved basis of design.
A practical selection process for a building project
- Map the lighting task. Identify whether the pendant is intended to provide direct illumination, reflected light, an intermediate orientation or a combination across different locations. Record the surfaces and zones that must receive light.
- Set the physical envelope. Measure the available ceiling height, clearance to furniture, adjacent fixtures, sprinklers, ductwork and signage. Use those measurements to establish a target configuration, then verify the permissible segment combinations with current manufacturer drawings.
- Choose a segment count and sequence. Specify the 12-, 18-, 24- or 36-inch segments required at each location, with no more than three segments unless current documentation states otherwise. Ask for a dimensioned elevation rather than relying on a catalog photograph.
- Coordinate support and power. Confirm the canopy, suspension, junction-box, structural-support and wiring requirements with the electrical contractor and structural team. The available article does not provide installation instructions, so these details must come from the technical package.
- Select color temperature and finish. Compare the four listed color temperatures and two finishes against the rest of the lighting and interior finish schedule. Verify that the chosen combination is offered for the exact configuration.
- Obtain photometric information. Request the current lumen, wattage, distribution, beam or optic information and photometric files needed for calculations. None of those performance figures is supplied in the product article.
- Review compliance and procurement data. Check current listing documents, energy-code information, price, lead time, distribution and warranty terms before approval. The 2024 article does not establish any of those commercial or project-delivery facts.
- Mock up critical locations. Where the pendant is prominent or the direct/indirect balance is important, test the proposed orientation and finish in the actual room or a representative mock-up. Record the selected aim so installation teams have a clear reference.
Where this system may be a good fit
Orbita’s documented strengths are most relevant where a project needs a pendant family that can change length and light direction from one location to another. For example, a hospitality, workplace or residential common area may use shorter assemblies over compact tables and longer assemblies over larger zones while keeping the same design language. A renovation may also benefit when the final furniture layout or ceiling coordination is not fully settled at the first design milestone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe product may be less suitable when a project decision depends on data that has not yet been supplied, such as a specific lumen package, a tightly controlled beam distribution, a documented acoustic performance or a fixed budget. Those are not negative findings about Orbita; they are decision points that require information beyond the feature description.

How to compare Orbita with another fixture
A fair comparison should evaluate the complete installed solution, not only the ability to rotate an optic. Use the same questions for every candidate:
| Decision axis | Information to collect |
|---|---|
| Length and configuration | Available section sizes, maximum segment count, permitted combinations and finished dimensions |
| Light direction | Range of rotation, locking or aiming method, direct/indirect capability and field-adjustment instructions |
| Photometric performance | Lumens, wattage, distribution, beam information, glare data and current photometric files |
| Color and finish | Color-temperature choices, color-rendering data, finish options and availability by configuration |
| Installation | Mounting, structural support, junction-box, driver, control and maintenance requirements |
| Compliance | Current listing, energy-code documentation and material-compliance statements for the exact model |
| Project delivery | Price, lead time, distribution, warranty and replacement-part support confirmed in writing |
This framework prevents a configurable fixture from being selected on appearance alone. It also makes substitutions easier to review because the team can see which performance or coordination attributes must remain unchanged.
Information the 2024 product article does not establish
The available product description is useful for identifying Orbita’s modular and aiming features, but it is not a complete specification. It does not state current availability, pricing, energy consumption, lumen output, optical distribution, color-rendering performance, dimming protocols, mounting details, installation steps, lead times, distribution channels or warranty terms. It also does not report independent testing, a market statistic or a hands-on evaluation.
Recommended Free Tools
Those omissions matter at different stages. Photometric and electrical data are needed for design calculations; mounting and wiring information are needed for coordination; current certification is needed for approval; and price and lead time are needed for procurement. Obtain each item from current manufacturer or distributor documentation before committing the fixture to a project.
Bottom line for specifiers
Orbita offers a clear feature-level proposition: specify up to three modular segments in four listed lengths, choose among four listed color temperatures and two finishes, then orient the light engine and optic through 360 degrees for direct, indirect or intermediate light. That combination can simplify a design that needs both dimensional flexibility and field-selected light direction.
Use those features as the starting point, not the entire approval basis. Confirm the exact configuration, photometric performance, installation requirements, current compliance documents, cost and delivery schedule for the project and jurisdiction before issuing a final specification.
