SMM said the measure shifted from decline to increase during the reporting period, attributing the reversal mainly to holiday slowdowns at downstream construction sites and reduced procurement.

SMM reported 4.5579 million metric tonnes of construction steel in social inventory as of October 8, 2026. That was 129,400 metric tonnes, or 2.92%, above the previous week. The report described this as a shift from a declining trend to an increase. Why did inventory build up during the holiday?
SMM attributed the increase chiefly to downstream construction sites being semi-stalled over the holiday. With construction progress slower, steel procurement also eased, leaving more material in social inventory during the reporting period. This is SMM’s explanation of the market movement, not an independently established causal finding.

How did the regional pattern differ?
Northwest: destocking continued
SMM said inventory in the northwest continued to decline. It pointed to falling temperatures during the holiday, mediocre provincial transactions, and steel-mill resources continuing to ship to surrounding areas as context for the local destocking.
Central China: a limited overall increase, with a larger buildup in Henan
The report described central China’s overall inventory increase as relatively small. SMM said mills in Hubei faced poor profitability and cut production amid sluggish holiday shipments. Henan, by contrast, saw a larger buildup, which SMM linked to increased arrivals of resources from outside the province.

The update is a dated market snapshot, not a standalone forecast of prices, demand, or project progress. For a useful comparison with a later report, keep the inventory definition consistent and check the reporting date, absolute stock level, week-over-week change, regional distribution, and the activity and procurement conditions described for that period. A single national movement can obscure divergent local patterns, as the northwest and Henan examples show.
