Elder Sandino Román, a member of the South America Northwest Area Presidency, presided and offered the dedicatory prayer. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not announced a completion date or construction schedule.
When did construction begin?
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 10, 2026. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints describes the ceremony as marking the start of the temple’s physical construction and spiritual mission; that is the Church’s characterization of the event.

Where is the temple being built, and what is planned?
The announced site is at Calle San Marcos 117-137 in San Juan Bautista, Maynas, Loreto, Peru. In an August 31, 2026 update, the Church gave the site area as 1.75 acres and the planned temple building area as approximately 20,000 square feet. These are figures for the announced project, not measurements of completed construction.

The Church describes Iquitos as Peru’s 10th temple. That is the project’s announced place in the country’s temple count, rather than a statement about the number of temples operating at the time of construction.
Who took part in the ceremony?
Elder Sandino Román, a member of the South America Northwest Area Presidency, presided over the groundbreaking and offered the dedicatory prayer. The Church’s October 10 report quoted him as saying: “We are especially grateful for the construction of a temple in Iquitos and for the faith of those who have waited and worked for this glorious day to arrive.”

He also prayed: “Please bless the members of Thy Church in Iquitos, and may this construction bring blessings to the community and contribute to the well-being and prosperity of this city.” The event brought together government, interfaith, civic and educational leaders, Church members and other participants, according to the Church report.
Why does the project matter to members in the Amazon region?
The Church presents the temple as bringing sacred ordinances closer to Latter-day Saints in the Amazon region. Its event coverage says Iquitos can be reached by air or river, primarily via the Amazon River, and describes members as having traveled long distances, often by air, to attend a temple. Those details reflect the Church’s account; the report does not provide travel-distance statistics.

At the time of the October 2026 report, the Church listed temples in Lima, Lima Los Olivos, Arequipa and Trujillo as operating in Peru. It also identified temples in Chiclayo, Chorrillos, Cusco, Huancayo and Piura as announced or under construction. Temple statuses can change, so this is a snapshot from the report’s publication period.

The public details establish that the groundbreaking has taken place and give the planned site and approximate building size. The Church reports cited here do not state a contractor, project budget, construction schedule, expected completion date or opening date. No completion timetable can be inferred from the groundbreaking alone.
