Construction date set for proposed parallel route for Woodruff Road

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The proposed Woodruff Road parallel route has a tentative two-stage schedule: clearing, grubbing and demolition are expected to begin in spring 2027, followed by roadway construction in fall 2029, according to an October 16, 2026 report from FOX Carolina. The Greenville-Pickens Area Transportation Study (GPATS) currently describes the project as being well into right-of-way acquisition and anticipates construction in 2027. No reliable opening-to-traffic date has been published.

What the latest schedule means

The spring 2027 date applies to early site work—clearing vegetation, grubbing out roots and topsoil, and demolishing affected structures. FOX Carolina’s report places construction of the parallel route itself in fall 2029. Those dates are tentative, not a guaranteed start or completion commitment.

GPATS’s current Horizon 2050 project page says construction is anticipated in 2027, which is broader and appears to refer to the project phase generally. That wording does not establish when the road will open. An older South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) project FAQ still says construction was expected to run from spring 2026 through spring 2029. Because that page predates the October 2026 update, its schedule should be treated as unrevised historical information rather than the current timetable.

Right-of-way acquisition is already well underway. Until acquisition, utility coordination, environmental work and final approvals are complete, the sequence and dates can change.

Where the parallel route will run

The proposed alternate route would connect Verdae Boulevard with Smith Hines Road at the Woodruff Road intersection in Greenville County. It is intended to carry through traffic away from the most congested portions of Woodruff Road while preserving access to the existing corridor.

Planned roadway cross-section

  • Four travel lanes total: two 12-foot lanes in each direction.
  • A median separating opposing traffic.
  • Curb and gutter drainage features.
  • A five-foot sidewalk on one side.
  • A 10-foot multiuse path on the other side.
  • Limited-access design, with intersection controls that include multiple roundabouts.

SCDOT also plans to signalize the intersection where the existing Woodruff Road meets the new route. The design therefore combines a continuous alternate roadway with controlled connections rather than simply adding lanes to the current road.

Why SCDOT says a parallel route is needed

SCDOT cites high traffic volumes, delays and recurring congestion on Woodruff Road. Engineers studied widening the existing road to seven travel lanes, but the agency’s FAQ says that option would not operate acceptably because projected demand could exceed 70,000 vehicles per day.

What construction could affect

SCDOT identifies potential impacts to wetlands and streams, along with residential and business relocations. Property impacts remain subject to change because right-of-way lines shown in project materials are preliminary. Owners and occupants should rely on direct project notices and finalized acquisition documents for parcel-specific information.

Drivers should expect temporary construction delays as work advances. SCDOT’s FAQ did not anticipate long-term detours, but short-term lane shifts, closures and work-zone restrictions can still occur near bridge, utility and intersection work. The absence of a long-term detour plan is not a promise that every phase will maintain normal traffic.

Cost, funding and project history

SCDOT’s 2020 public-hearing release estimated the preferred alternative at $121 million. The estimate was to be funded through GPATS guide-share allocations administered through SCDOT and the Federal Highway Administration. It is a 2020 planning estimate, not a current construction bid or a guaranteed final cost.

Planning began in 2017. Public input narrowed 17 concepts to five reasonable alternatives. SCDOT selected the preferred design by comparing cost, traffic operations, natural-resource impacts and right-of-way requirements. Those criteria explain why the agency advanced a parallel route instead of the previously studied seven-lane widening concept.

What residents should watch next

  1. Right-of-way notices: Acquisition activity and finalized limits will show which properties and businesses are affected.
  2. Environmental and utility work: Wetland and stream permits, utility relocations and site preparation can influence the sequence.
  3. Spring 2027 site activity: If the tentative schedule holds, clearing, grubbing and demolition would be the first visible work.
  4. Fall 2029 roadway construction: This is the latest reported target for building the parallel route, subject to change.
  5. Opening date: No dependable public date has been established, so motorists should not plan around a specific completion season.

Bottom line on the Woodruff Road bypass

The project is moving forward, but its dates are not firm. The best current expectation is early site work in spring 2027 and roadway construction in fall 2029, while GPATS lists construction as anticipated in 2027. The planned four-lane route would link Verdae Boulevard and Smith Hines Road, cross both I-85 and I-385 on new bridges, and add pedestrian and intersection improvements. Until SCDOT publishes a revised, detailed schedule, those milestones—and any eventual opening date—remain subject to change.
