Women can enter construction through many routes, from on-the-job laborer roles to paid apprenticeships and construction management. The right path depends on the work you want to do, local openings, training requirements, and the conditions you are comfortable with—not on a single “best trade for women.”
Which construction career paths can you choose?
Construction covers building, infrastructure, specialized craft work, and project coordination. Some jobs involve outdoor or physically demanding work; others center on operating equipment, installing a specialty system, or coordinating people and schedules. Duties vary by employer and project.
| Path | Example work | Training consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Building trades | Electrical work, carpentry, plumbing, operating engineering | Ask local apprenticeship sponsors about entry requirements, paid work, and instruction. |
| Heavy construction | Roads, bridges, utilities, and site preparation | Confirm equipment, schedule, and jobsite requirements with the employer or sponsor. |
| Specialty trades | Welding, masonry, tile setting, glazing, and crane operation | Requirements vary by specialty; verify credentials and application criteria locally. |
| Laborer or helper | Handling materials and tools, cleaning work areas or equipment, and supporting crews | Often learned on the job; some employers require safety certification. |
| Construction management | Supervising and coordinating construction work | A distinct career option; the cited BLS wage source does not establish one standard route into management. |
Compare opportunities by the tasks involved, local wages and benefits, training length, whether training includes paid work, physical and outdoor conditions, schedule, required credentials, advancement opportunities, and whether a nearby program is available. No trade should be ranked as inherently suitable for women; individual goals and actual local work conditions matter.
What do construction jobs pay?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports these national median annual wages from May 2025 data. They cover workers across the occupation, not women specifically, and are not starting-pay promises.

| Occupation | U.S. median annual wage | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Carpenters | $60,950 | BLS, May 2025 |
| Construction laborers | $47,430 | BLS, May 2025 |
| Electricians | $61,790 | BLS, May 2025 |
| Operating engineers and other construction equipment operators | $61,800 | BLS, May 2025 |
| Construction managers | $109,160 | BLS, May 2025 |
These figures are national occupation-wide medians; actual earnings can differ with state and metro area, experience, industry, hours, employer, union status, and self-employment. Use current BLS occupational wage data and ask local apprenticeship sponsors or employers about wages and benefits in your area.
Mind the occupation labels when comparing BLS pages: the Occupational Outlook page gives a May 2025 median of $46,680 for construction laborers and helpers together, while the national wage release gives $47,430 for construction laborers alone. Those are different groupings, not interchangeable estimates.

How can you get into construction with no experience?
Start in a laborer or helper role
BLS says construction laborers and helpers typically learn on the job, often by shadowing experienced workers. Formal education is not typically required, though employers may prefer a high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers require safety certification following OSHA guidelines before or after hiring. Ask about the exact role and prerequisites before applying.
Apply for a registered apprenticeship
Registered apprenticeships combine paid work experience with classroom or technical instruction. Sponsors may include unions, trade associations, employers, or other organizations. Apprenticeship.gov reports 480,399 apprentices served in construction in 2025, 28% more than five years earlier; these are overall construction participation figures, not counts of women.

Program lengths and admission rules vary. California’s Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS), says its apprenticeship programs typically last 2–5 years, but that is state-specific guidance, not a universal duration. Check the requirements and schedule with the sponsor where you plan to apply.
Consider a readiness or pre-apprenticeship program
A readiness program may help you prepare for an apprenticeship application or trade work, but offerings, eligibility, and service areas differ. California DAS recommends a practical sequence: research trades, find programs, contact sponsors about requirements and application timing, prepare for any tests or application steps, and apply when intake is open.

What should you ask before choosing a trade or program?
- Work: What tasks will you do day to day, and how much time is spent indoors, outdoors, or operating equipment?
- Training: What prerequisites, tests, credentials, instruction, and training duration apply? Is the work portion paid, and how are wages and benefits structured?
- Conditions: Ask about schedule, travel, seasonal slowdowns, overtime, required PPE, safety instruction, and the physical demands of the actual job. Discuss accommodations with the employer or sponsor as needed.
- Progression: What credentials or experience support advancement, and what roles do graduates commonly move into?
- Availability: When does the next application window open, and are there nearby employers or sponsors accepting candidates?
Conditions are not the same across construction. For example, BLS describes laborer and helper work as potentially physically demanding and often outdoors in varied weather. Most work full time, but schedules can vary; some highway or bridge jobs take place overnight, and seasonal slowdowns occur in some northern climates. BLS also notes protective gear such as gloves and safety glasses for this occupation. Ask about the requirements of the specific role rather than assuming this description applies to every trade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What support is available for women entering construction?
Women are underrepresented in some broad occupational categories, but statistics need careful interpretation. In 2024, 1% of women’s full-time wage-and-salary employment was in the broad “natural resources, construction, and maintenance” occupational group, compared with 16% of men’s, according to BLS. This measure includes more than construction trades; it does not mean women hold 1% of construction jobs.
