Work is underway to replace Bridge 350091, which carries US 29/US 74 (Wilkinson Boulevard) over the Catawba River between Gaston and Mecklenburg counties. NCDOT’s contract schedule sets an intermediate completion milestone of August 1, 2032, and final completion of January 28, 2033; the 2032 date is not the contract’s final completion date.
Which bridge is being replaced?
The project replaces Bridge 350091 on US 29/US 74, also known as Wilkinson Boulevard, over the Catawba River. The bridge links Gaston and Mecklenburg counties. NCDOT identifies the work under contract B-6051, combined with U-6143. The department’s May 19, 2026 letting record describes the project area at the intersections of NC-7 and SR-2083 with US-74.

When is the bridge scheduled to be finished?
NCDOT’s letting record gives two contract dates. The intermediate completion milestone is August 1, 2032; planting, reforestation and permanent vegetation establishment are excluded from that milestone. The contract’s final completion date is January 28, 2033. Readers asking when the replacement is due should distinguish the 2032 milestone from the later final date.
Zachry Construction Corporation announced on October 6, 2026, that construction began in September 2026 and that substantial completion was planned for April 2031. That target differs from the dates in NCDOT’s contract record. The available announcements do not explain whether the contractor’s date concerns a different scope or reflects a schedule change, so the two timelines should not be treated as equivalent. Who won the contract, and what is the reported price?
NCDOT’s 2026 letting record lists Zachry Construction Corporation as the winning bidder, with a bid of $78,019,774.80. The engineer’s estimate was $62.871 million. These are different measures: the first is the winning bid and the second is the agency estimate. Neither figure establishes the eventual final project cost.
What improvements are planned for the bridge?
NCDOT Board of Transportation materials list several aesthetic additions: architectural concrete surface treatment, bridge coating and overlooks at the center of the bridge. NCDOT is to contribute $453,000 toward the additional work; the remaining actual costs are to be shared equally by Gaston and Mecklenburg counties under separate agreements. The department describes its State Transportation Improvement Program as a 10-year state and federally mandated plan that identifies transportation funding and schedules; NCDOT’s STIP overview explains the program.
