New York YIMBY reported on October 8, 2026, citing the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), that completion is expected in fall 2028; that is a projected construction completion, not a confirmed opening date.
What is being built at 299 DeGraw Street?
The project will adapt the former Engine Company 204 firehouse for NPF, a nonprofit music-education organization. The City Record describes the work as renovation and a change of use from a decommissioned FDNY firehouse to a nonprofit music school. The city procurement notice identifies Brooklyn Community Board 6 as the community board for the project.

The building had been decommissioned in 2003, according to the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA). In 2019, DCLA announced city capital funding for its restoration and identified NPF as the intended cultural operator.
What is the construction schedule?
Construction was reported underway on October 8, 2026. New York YIMBY attributed the expected fall 2028 completion to DDC. A Citywide Statement of Needs entry had listed June 30, 2027 as a desired occupancy date for a proposed DCLA facility at the address. That earlier planning date is not confirmation of occupancy, and it differs from the later reported construction-completion expectation.

How will the firehouse be renovated?
Historic exterior and building fabric
Plans described by New York YIMBY call for restoration of the historic brick and terracotta façade and conversion of the ground-floor garage doors into glazed openings. The City Record procurement scope also specifies exterior masonry restoration, replacement windows and doors, and partial underpinning of an existing party wall on the west side.
Interior access and building systems
The reported design includes an accessible open staircase and a new elevator connecting all three floors. The procurement scope calls for new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire-protection, security, information-technology, and audiovisual systems. Together, the work addresses both the building’s change of use and the infrastructure needed for a modern educational and cultural facility.
What spaces and programs are planned?
New York YIMBY describes soundproofed lesson rooms, a recording studio, music library and gallery, an ensemble room, and a courtyard intended for multidisciplinary programming. The report credits MBB Architects with the design and says NYC DDC is developing the project on behalf of DCLA.
DCLA’s 2019 announcement said the renovated facility would support expanded after-school, Saturday, and Summer Strings programs. Its description included strings, piano, DJ, composition, music theory, and voice instruction, as well as performance opportunities and assistance with school placement. DCLA said the placement support was for approximately 200 NPF students each year seeking entry to specialized high schools, conservatories, and colleges; that was a 2019 program description, not a current enrollment figure.

What do the reported project figures mean?
Three figures appear in sources from different years and contexts. They should not be treated as interchangeable: the reported overall project cost is not reconciled with the awarded construction contract in the reviewed sources, and the earlier capital-funding announcement is not an additional amount to add to either figure.
