Construction is underway at the former Beef-a-Roo at 1680 N. Alpine Road in Rockford, where the owners of Tom & Jerry’s and Candy Cloud are preparing to reopen the restaurant as an independent operation. No reopening date has been announced.
What is happening at the Alpine Road location?
The project has moved beyond an agreement and planning: local reporting dated October 1 and October 5, 2026, says construction is underway at the former restaurant near North Alpine and Highcrest roads. The current construction coverage gives the address as 1680 N. Alpine Road. Earlier stories have used 1670, so the newer construction announcement is the best address to use without treating the difference as a confirmed correction.
The work is intended to bring the Rockford restaurant back. The reporting does not identify a contractor, construction schedule, permit status, or inspection timeline.
Who is working to reopen it?
The restaurant is being pursued by the owners of Tom & Jerry’s and Candy Cloud under an independent operating arrangement. A September interview identifies the partners as Robert Grottke of Tom & Jerry’s and Alex Edwards of Candy Cloud. Grottke said they wanted the restaurant to be locally run and decisions to be made locally; that remains the stated approach for the reopening.

When will Beef-a-Roo reopen?
There is no confirmed public reopening date in the October construction reports. A September 16 story discussed a possible end-of-2026 timeframe, but it was a target, not a guaranteed schedule. Construction underway does not establish when the building will be ready to serve customers.
What is known about the menu and the restaurant’s history?
The owners say they have been reconnecting with longtime team members and revisiting recipes, ingredients, and other historical details. They have also invited residents to follow the progress and share memories. These are efforts underway, not confirmation of a final menu or a complete restoration of the former restaurant.

The construction announcement said, “We really want Rockford to feel like it’s part of this next chapter,” and described work as underway to get “a Rockford favorite ready to welcome you back.” Those statements reflect the announcement’s intentions; no specific opening-day offerings or service details have been confirmed.

Multiple Rockford-area Beef-a-Roo locations closed in early July 2026 amid operational and financial difficulties affecting the company. Local reporting said the Freeport restaurant remained open as an independently operated location. The Alpine Road effort is a separate local reopening plan, not confirmation that other closed locations will return.
