Connecting Your Samsung Refrigerator to Wi-Fi: A Complete Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatible Samsung refrigerators connect to your home network through the SmartThings app—not usually through your phone’s ordinary Wi-Fi settings. The general process is to install SmartThings, sign in to a Samsung account, add the refrigerator, place it in pairing mode if prompted, select your home network, and confirm that the appliance appears online.

The exact buttons, menus, supported Wi-Fi bands, and available controls vary by model, country, software, and app version. Use this guide for the common process, but treat your refrigerator’s model-specific manual as the final authority.

Before you begin

First confirm that your refrigerator supports Wi-Fi or SmartThings. Not every Samsung refrigerator is a connected model. Look for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Family Hub touchscreen or network settings.
  • A Wi-Fi symbol or network button on the control panel.
  • A QR code on the refrigerator, packaging, control panel, or manual.
  • Your exact model number on Samsung Support or in the owner’s manual.
  • The refrigerator listed as a supported device in SmartThings.

You will also need:

  • A powered-on refrigerator that is not showing an error.
  • A current version of SmartThings on an Android or iOS phone or tablet.
  • A Samsung account.
  • Your home Wi-Fi name and password.
  • Your phone connected to the intended home network.
  • A reliable wireless signal where the refrigerator is installed.
  • Bluetooth, local-network, location, or nearby-device permissions if SmartThings requests them.

Many Samsung smart refrigerators use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Some will not connect to a 5 GHz-only network, so check your model’s specifications before starting. A cited Samsung refrigerator manual, for example, specifies 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n support; that specification should not automatically be applied to every model.

How to connect a Samsung refrigerator to Wi-Fi

  1. Install or update SmartThings. Open the app and sign in to your Samsung account.
  2. Connect your phone to your home Wi-Fi. Use the network that you want the refrigerator to join.
  3. Open the device-add screen. In SmartThings, tap Devices, then tap Add (+).
  4. Scan the refrigerator’s QR code. Choose Scan QR code if your model provides one.
  5. Use manual selection if necessary. The documented route is commonly Refrigerator → Samsung → Refrigerator → Start. App labels can differ by region and version, so choose the equivalent refrigerator-add option.
  6. Put the refrigerator into pairing mode. Follow the app’s instructions. On some models, holding the Fridge button for at least five seconds displays AP. This is a common method, not a universal command.
  7. Select your home network. Choose the correct Wi-Fi name and enter its password carefully, including capitalization and symbols.
  8. Wait for registration. SmartThings will connect the refrigerator and associate it with your Samsung account. Do not interrupt the process.
  9. Name the appliance. Confirm that the refrigerator’s device card appears under Devices.

Samsung’s current refrigerator setup guidance covers the QR-code and manual routes and notes that some models do not require the AP step. See the Samsung refrigerator-to-SmartThings guide for the documented flow.

If the refrigerator displays “AP”

On supported models, AP generally indicates access-point or pairing mode. Try holding the refrigerator’s Fridge button for five or more seconds, then continue in SmartThings. If nothing happens, stop repeating the combination and check the model manual: Family Hub and other refrigerator generations may use different controls or may enter pairing mode automatically.

Family Hub refrigerator setup

Family Hub models may provide a touchscreen-based process. Depending on the model and software, you may need to open the refrigerator’s network settings, select a wireless network, and enter a PIN shown on the display.

  • EXTERNAL DISPENSER: External dispenser gives you easy access to chilled, filtered water and two types of ice: cubed and crushed ice.

Some older Family Hub setup flows—particularly older iPhone procedures—temporarily ask the phone to join a refrigerator-created Wi-Fi network. That is model- and software-dependent and should not be confused with the refrigerator’s final connection to your home router. Follow the instructions shown on the Family Hub display and in the Samsung Family Hub connection guide.

How to confirm the connection worked

Check all of the following:

  • The refrigerator appears as a card under Devices in SmartThings.
  • The refrigerator’s Wi-Fi indicator shows a connected state or stops blinking.
  • SmartThings displays current appliance status.
  • A supported notification or setting responds.
  • The refrigerator remains online after you close and reopen SmartThings.

Available features depend on the model. Compatible Family Hub refrigerators may allow temperature adjustment through SmartThings, while another model may offer only status, notifications, diagnostics, or selected controls. Samsung’s temperature-control guidance illustrates this model-dependent behavior.

Samsung refrigerator will not connect to Wi-Fi

Symptom First checks
SmartThings cannot find the refrigerator Confirm Wi-Fi compatibility, update SmartThings, allow requested permissions, and retry QR scanning or manual selection. Put the refrigerator into pairing mode if prompted.
Your network is not listed Confirm that a 2.4 GHz network is available, the SSID is not hidden, and the refrigerator is within range.
The password is rejected Re-enter it exactly. Check capitalization, symbols, the selected SSID, and whether the router uses a security mode the refrigerator supports.
Setup stalls Move the phone nearer to the refrigerator, restart the router, avoid guest-network isolation, and retry.
The refrigerator connected and then went offline Check the router, restart SmartThings, update the app and refrigerator firmware, power-cycle the refrigerator according to its manual, then remove and re-add it if needed.
A used refrigerator cannot be registered It may still belong to another Samsung account or SmartThings location. Remove it from the former account if possible, use the model-specific network-registration reset, or contact Samsung.

Check the Wi-Fi band and router settings

Band compatibility is one of the most common causes of failed setup. If the network does not appear or pairing repeatedly fails:

  • WiFi CONNECTIVITY: Wi-Fi connectivity on your fridge isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s essential for safety and energy conservation. You’ll get immediate notifications if the temperature drops due to a power outage or if you accidentally leave the door open.
  • TWIN COOLING PLUS: Independent fridge and freezer controls keep food fresher, longer.
  • ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED: Eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
  • FINGERPRINT-RESISTANT FINISH: Finish that withstands everyday smudges so you spend less time cleaning.
  1. Confirm that the router broadcasts 2.4 GHz.
  2. If 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz share one network name, temporarily separate the bands or disable 5 GHz during setup if your router allows it.
  3. Avoid guest networks that prevent devices from communicating with one another.
  4. Check whether MAC filtering, access controls, parental controls, or enterprise authentication blocks the refrigerator.
  5. Verify that the router’s security mode is supported by your model.
  6. Restart the router and retry the setup.

Do not assume that every Samsung refrigerator supports WPA3, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, captive portals, or enterprise networks. The model manual is required for those details. The Samsung smart-refrigerator manual provides an example of model-specific wireless requirements.

Improve a weak refrigerator Wi-Fi signal

A refrigerator far from the router, behind several walls, in a garage, or near dense appliances may have an unreliable signal. Move the router or improve coverage if practical. Samsung recommends addressing range and coverage when distance is the problem; see its SmartThings troubleshooting guidance.

A mesh node or extender may help, but it is not automatically the answer. A basic extender can create a second network or complicate roaming, and IoT isolation can prevent SmartThings from completing setup. Prefer a properly configured mesh system or one usable 2.4 GHz household network. Do not buy networking equipment until you have ruled out an unsupported refrigerator, wrong password, 5 GHz-only configuration, or guest-network restrictions.

Reconnect after changing the Wi-Fi name or password

Changing the router’s SSID or password can leave the refrigerator with obsolete credentials. Try this sequence:

  1. Open SmartThings and check whether the refrigerator is still listed.
  2. If the device remains reachable, open its network or Wi-Fi settings and update the credentials if that option is available.
  3. If it cannot be reached, remove it from SmartThings and add it again.
  4. Put the refrigerator into pairing mode using the model-specific method.
  5. Connect it to the new network and confirm its device card returns online.

Samsung recommends resetting or deleting and re-adding devices when ordinary recovery steps do not work. A network reset is different from a complete factory reset, so use the refrigerator’s manual for the exact procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recover an offline refrigerator

  1. Confirm that the refrigerator has power and is operating normally.
  2. Check whether its Wi-Fi icon is off or blinking.
  3. Verify that the router has an internet connection.
  4. Force-close and reopen SmartThings.
  5. Update SmartThings and check for refrigerator firmware updates.
  6. Restart the router.
  7. Power-cycle the refrigerator only as directed by its manual. Some Samsung manuals advise disconnecting power for about one minute before reconnecting, but do not unplug during a firmware update.
  8. Remove and re-add the refrigerator if it remains offline.

A blinking Wi-Fi icon can mean that the SmartThings connection is incomplete on some models. The meaning and the button sequence for disabling Wi-Fi are model-specific; consult the relevant manual rather than applying another model’s combination.

What SmartThings can do

On compatible refrigerators, SmartThings may provide:

  • Remote status checks.
  • Door, temperature, or other notifications.
  • Temperature adjustment.
  • Diagnostics and energy information.
  • Selected ice or appliance controls.
  • Additional Family Hub features on supported models.

These capabilities are not guaranteed across the Samsung refrigerator range. Features depend on model, country, service provider, network, phone, app version, and refrigerator software. Wi-Fi is generally needed for connected features, but basic cooling and ordinary refrigerator operation do not automatically require an internet connection; verify exceptions in your manual.

When to contact Samsung

Use Samsung support when a confirmed compatible refrigerator never enters pairing mode, cannot see any supported network, repeatedly goes offline despite a strong compatible signal, fails a firmware update, has a hardware or display problem, or is locked to another owner’s account. Samsung offers support through its support channels and SmartThings resources. Optional Samsung Care+ may include setup and troubleshooting assistance, but it is unnecessary for most simple Wi-Fi pairing problems; review current eligibility and checkout pricing before purchasing at Samsung Care+.
