Choose a mixer for the material and aggregate you need to mix—not just the name on the machine. Concrete mixes may contain coarse aggregate, while dedicated mortar and plaster mixers are rated for fine cementitious materials. Some models are approved for more than one material, but their limits are model-specific: check the manufacturer’s manual and maximum aggregate size before mixing concrete in a mortar mixer.
What is the difference between a concrete mixer and a mortar mixer?
A concrete mixer is intended for concrete, which can include coarse aggregate such as gravel or crushed stone. A mortar mixer is designed for materials such as masonry mortar and, depending on the model, plaster, stucco, grout, or other fine cementitious mixes. Their mixing mechanisms and ratings are not interchangeable by default.
That distinction is a starting point, not a universal rule. Manufacturers specify different uses and limits for individual machines. A label such as “mortar mixer” does not establish that a machine can handle concrete aggregate, and “concrete mixer” alone does not tell you its batch output or suitability for a particular mix.
Can a mortar mixer mix concrete?
Only if its manufacturer rates that exact model for concrete and the concrete’s aggregate is within the stated limit. For example, IMER USA describes its Minuteman for mortar, stucco, grout, or concrete. Its Mix 360 product listing specifies a maximum aggregate size of 3/8 inch. That limit applies to the Mix 360; it should not be assumed for other mortar mixers.

If the manual or product specification does not explicitly permit the material and aggregate size, do not assume the mixer can handle them. Oversized aggregate or an unsuitable mix can exceed the machine’s intended capability. For an unfamiliar or multipurpose model, confirm the rating with the manual or manufacturer before loading it.
Which mixer should you choose?
For concrete with coarse aggregate
Choose a concrete mixer rated for the aggregate and batch you plan to use. If considering a multipurpose machine, verify its concrete rating and maximum aggregate size. This matters especially when the mix contains gravel or other coarse material.

For masonry mortar, plaster, or stucco
A mortar or plaster mixer is the natural choice when its listed applications match your material. Graco lists mortar and plaster mixer applications that include masonry, stucco, EIFS, grout, and self-leveling underlayments. Check the individual machine’s specifications: an application category does not mean every model handles every formulation or volume.
For occasional or mixed-material work
A multipurpose model may be useful if its manufacturer explicitly lists each material you intend to mix. Compare its aggregate limit and rated batch output against your actual work rather than relying on a broad “multipurpose” description. If you only need a machine occasionally, renting may be worth considering; confirm local availability and that the rental model is rated for your material.

Compare capacity and job fit—not just the mixer’s name
Nominal drum size and usable batch output are not necessarily the same. Compare the manufacturer’s stated output with how much mix the job needs, how often you can make batches, and how quickly the material must be placed.

These are manufacturer specifications for the named machines, not standard capacities for their categories or independent evidence that one mixer outperforms another. Before choosing, compare the factors the manufacturer publishes:

- Material and aggregate: Confirm the intended mix and maximum aggregate size.
- Usable batch output: Distinguish batch output from drum capacity, then estimate the number of batches required.
- Power source: Check what the site can supply and the model’s power requirements.
- Transport and setup: Consider portability, access to the mixing area, and where the machine can be positioned.
- Discharge: Check how the mixer empties and whether that method suits the job’s placement workflow.
Safe operation: guarding, electricity, and silica
Keep clear of moving parts
Keep guards in place and hands and tools away from moving parts. OSHA’s 2018 incident report describes a worker who reached into a running mortar mixer and suffered amputation injuries; it is an example of a serious hazard, not a measure of how often such injuries occur. Shut the mixer down using the procedure in its manual before clearing material or performing maintenance.
Manage electrical and splash hazards
OSHA identifies shock and electrocution hazards associated with water near electric mortar-mixer equipment and faulty cords. It also identifies eye-splash and unguarded-moving-part hazards. Inspect electrical equipment before use, keep water away from electrical components, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for operation and shutdown. Wear eye protection appropriate to the task.

Assess silica exposure for the actual work
OSHA’s 2019 interpretation says that small amounts of mortar or concrete mixed in isolation are likely to remain below the action level under foreseeable conditions. It also explains that exposure depends on duration, location, and mixing method: extended bag opening and dumping or large-scale, silo-fed work can reach or exceed the action level. The interpretation is not a blanket exemption for every mixing task. Assess the actual worksite and follow applicable silica requirements.
