Yes—you can compost in December. Cold weather slows decomposition, and a small or partly frozen bin may show little progress until spring, but you can keep collecting and balancing materials while protecting the pile from excess water and exposed food scraps.

What to expect from a December compost pile

Microbes work more slowly as temperatures fall. A larger pile or bin may retain warmth in its center and continue breaking down material, while a small system can cool or freeze more quickly. Melissa Fery of Oregon State University Extension Service puts it plainly: “Composting in the winter is a slower process than when the air temperature is warmer, but it’s definitely possible!” Oregon State Extension’s winter guidance addresses farm manure and bedding, so its pile dimensions and operating targets should not be treated as backyard-bin requirements.

7 tips for composting in December

1. Expect slower progress

Keep adding suitable material even if the pile appears inactive. Decomposition can resume more visibly when conditions warm; there is no need to force a hot-compost process in every home system. UNH Extension explains winter composting and the effects of cold on a home pile.

2. Balance greens with browns

Pair food scraps and other fresh, nitrogen-rich “greens” with dry, carbon-rich “browns” such as leaves. Cover each new layer of scraps with browns to limit exposed food and help avoid a soggy, unpleasant mass after a thaw. Illinois Extension’s winter advice and UConn Extension’s guidance both emphasize managing inputs through winter.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

3. Save leaves and chop bulky additions

Store a supply of dry leaves so you have browns available when kitchen scraps accumulate. Shredding or chopping bulky material increases its exposed surface area and can help it break down more readily. UNH Extension’s winter composting guidance recommends preparing materials for cold-weather use.

4. Keep out excess rain and snow

A pile that is saturated can lose air and become cold and slow. Cover it during wet or snowy weather; Oregon State describes a tarp as one low-cost option. If the material is genuinely dry, add water as needed—aim for moist, not waterlogged. The Oregon State guidance concerns managed farm piles, while its composting and water-quality guidance explains moisture management in an agricultural context.

  • Garden Gloves Included: The gloves that not only protect your hands from injury, but are also waterproof, making them easy to clean; With 4 durable ABS plastic claws for easy digging, planting and other gardening work

5. Turn less unless conditions call for it

Frequent turning can release warmth, so Illinois Extension advises reducing or stopping turning during winter when heat retention matters. But do not follow a rigid no-turn rule: if the pile is wet or smells bad, add dry browns and aerate it to address the conditions. Illinois Extension and Oregon State describe these tradeoffs.

6. Monitor temperature only if it helps

A long-stem compost thermometer can be useful if you actively manage a hot pile and want to track its interior temperature. It is optional for an ordinary backyard bin: a cooler pile can still produce compost, just more slowly. University of Florida IFAS notes that 131°F–140°F may be desirable for destroying weed seeds or plant pathogens, but says maintaining that range can be difficult. Oregon State gives a 130°F–150°F effective range for its managed farm composting context; neither target is a universal home-composting requirement. Oregon State’s winter guide

7. Use finished compost when it is ready

Mature compost is dark and crumbly, smells earthy, and no longer contains recognizable original scraps. Use it in a vegetable garden or flowerbed, or as mulch. If you are saving it for spring, keep it covered. Oregon State Extension, UConn Extension, and UNH Extension describe these uses and signs of finished compost.

Choose a winter approach that fits your setup

Approach Best fit Tradeoff
Add-as-you-go bin or pile Gardeners who want a low-effort routine and can keep browns on hand. Less work, but the material takes longer to finish; progress may be minimal through cold spells.
Actively managed hot pile Gardeners with enough material and space to manage the pile and monitor conditions. Requires more attention and conditions that support heat. Oregon State’s guidance on at least 1 cubic yard, a 30:1 carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and temperatures of 130°F–150°F is specifically for its managed farm manure-and-bedding system, not a general backyard prescription. Source

Winter severity, pile size, and the mix of materials all affect how quickly either approach progresses. Choose based on your available space, supply of greens and browns, and willingness to turn and monitor—not on a promise of a particular winter finish date.
