The ComMarker Omni X is worth considering when UV-specific work—especially internal crystal or glass engraving—is central to your business. It is less compelling as a general-purpose replacement for a fiber laser, CO2 cutter, or inexpensive diode engraver. ComMarker offers enclosed 6 W and 12 W versions with a claimed maximum speed of 10,000 mm/s, autofocus, multiple field lenses, and support for subsurface 3D engraving. Those headline figures are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of everyday production speed or finished-mark resolution.

What the ComMarker Omni X is

The Omni X is an enclosed 355-nm ultraviolet laser engraver. ComMarker currently lists 6 W and 12 W configurations, with standard work areas of 150 × 150 mm and 250 × 250 mm respectively. Optional slide extensions increase those areas to 150 × 400 mm and 250 × 400 mm.

UV lasers use a shorter wavelength and higher photon energy than diode, CO2, and fiber systems. That can make them useful for fine marking on acrylic, plastics, coated metals, electronics, ceramics, stone, glass, crystal, and heat-sensitive products. UV processing can reduce the heat-affected area and charring associated with some other laser types, but it does not make every material automatically safe or suitable.

ComMarker lists wood, leather, acrylic, glass, crystal, ceramic, stone, plastics, coated metals, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, silver, gold, platinum, and titanium among supported materials. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities; performance, contrast, fumes, and repeatability still vary substantially by material and finish. See the official specifications.

Key specifications

Specification Published figure How to interpret it
Laser 355-nm UV Designed for fine, specialty-material processing
Power options 6 W and 12 W Confirm configuration and voltage at checkout
Maximum claimed speed 10,000 mm/s Not the cycle time of every job
Work area 150 × 150 mm or 250 × 250 mm Depends on power and lens
Maximum processing height 235 mm Confirm applicability for the chosen lens and workflow
Spot dimension 0.0019 mm ComMarker’s laboratory specification, not guaranteed visible resolution
Positioning accuracy 0.001 mm XY and Z Manufacturer claims, not independent production measurements
Body and weight 515 × 320 × 655 mm; 32 kg Requires a stable, suitably sized work surface
Input power 480 W maximum Select 110 V or 220 V to match the installation

These figures are listed by ComMarker on its specification page. A small spot, positioning figure, or autofocus system does not by itself determine the final appearance of a mark. Artwork, scan density, lens selection, focus, vibration, material, power, speed, and hatch settings all matter.

Does it produce genuinely fine detail?

The Omni X’s advertised 0.0019 mm spot dimension is best treated as an optical specification rather than a promise that every finished mark will have that resolution. Four different concepts are often confused:

  • Spot size: the approximate optical spot produced by the laser.
  • Positioning accuracy: how precisely the motion system is intended to locate the beam.
  • Image resolution: the detail contained in the artwork and scan lines.
  • Visible mark quality: the contrast, edge sharpness, texture, and consistency achieved on a particular material.

Lens choice creates an important trade-off. A smaller field generally favors concentrated detail, while a larger field favors bigger objects and fewer repositioning steps. The advertised accuracy figures also do not establish how small text remains readable on dark plastic, polished metal, curved glass, or crystal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a business buying the Omni X for fine personalization, test the smallest text, line art, logo, and QR-style pattern you actually sell. Record the lens, material batch, focus, speed, power, frequency, hatch spacing, and number of passes. That test is more useful than selecting a machine based solely on a laboratory spot figure.

How fast is it?

ComMarker claims a maximum working speed of 10,000 mm/s. That is a machine specification, not a universal production rate. Actual job time depends on engraved area, resolution, hatch spacing, number of passes, pulse settings, material response, and whether the work is surface or internal.

For a realistic purchase comparison, measure completed-job time rather than head speed alone. Include object loading, autofocus, fixturing, alignment, test marks, engraving, inspection, and cleanup. Representative tests should include:

  • a small jewelry logo;
  • a 50 × 50 mm crystal image;
  • fine text on acrylic;
  • a surface mark on glass; and
  • a repeated batch of identical blanks.

No independent controlled timing results establish the Omni X’s typical throughput across those jobs. The 12 W model may offer more useful headroom for larger areas, longer sessions, and some cutting tasks, but more power does not automatically create finer detail.

3D internal glass and crystal engraving

This is the Omni X’s most distinctive capability. Surface engraving marks the outside face of an object. Subsurface or internal engraving creates marks beneath the surface of transparent glass or crystal. 3D internal engraving uses depth-aware data, a point cloud, voxel-like design, or another supported representation to place marks at different depths inside the object.

That is not the same as making a raised 3D relief or simply frosting the outside of a glass panel. ComMarker confirms support for 3D internal engraving, but the result depends on the blank’s optical properties, clarity, internal stress, curvature, coatings, geometry, lens, calibration, and focal-depth control.

Do not assume that ordinary soda-lime glass, optical crystal, K9 glass, and a coated ornament will behave identically. Bubbles, inclusions, stress, inconsistent composition, or unsuitable curvature can produce weak contrast, cloudiness, cracking, double images, or an unwanted surface mark.

A practical internal-engraving workflow

  1. Choose the lens and mode. Internal and surface engraving may require different optical setups. Treat lens selection as a core process step.
  2. Secure and measure the object. Use the lifting platform, a suitable fixture, or a rotary system where appropriate. Irregular objects may need a custom jig.
  3. Test the material. Use a sacrificial blank or low-value area before processing a saleable crystal.
  4. Prepare the data. Surface jobs may use raster or vector artwork. Internal work may require a 3D model, depth map, point cloud, or proprietary import format; confirm the current software requirement.
  5. Set focal depth. The energy must be focused beneath the surface, not merely on the exterior.
  6. Run a low-risk test. Check contrast, cracking, cloudiness, surface damage, and alignment.
  7. Tune the job. Adjust speed, power, frequency, hatch, and passes for the specific blank.
  8. Save the production profile. Record the lens, object dimensions, focal depth, settings, software version, and firmware version.

ComMarker’s user manual and operation tutorial should be checked for the current procedure. Do not treat a generic “glass” preset as transferable between different crystal and glass products.

Software and file compatibility

ComMarker lists ComMarker Studio, ComMarker App, and LightBurn as supported software. It also lists PNG, BMP, JPG/JPEG, DXF, PLT, AI, SVG, STL, and OBJ file types.

That does not establish that every file type works in every mode. General surface-marking workflows may differ from internal 3D engraving, and the published specifications do not fully document feature parity among the three software options. Before buying, confirm whether autofocus, internal engraving, depth control, rotary alignment, and the intended 3D file format are available in the software you plan to use.

LightBurn may be attractive for familiar design and surface-marking workflows, but do not assume it provides the complete Omni X internal-engraving workflow without confirming the current software and firmware support. This proprietary-workflow question can matter as much as the laser itself.

Materials: where UV helps and where it does not

Good reasons to consider UV

  • Internal engraving in suitable transparent crystal or glass.
  • Fine personalization on acrylic and plastics.
  • Coated or painted metals where removing or changing the coating is the goal.
  • Jewelry, electronics, small awards, and delicate components.
  • Ceramics, stone, and specialty products requiring controlled marking.
  • Wood, leather, paper, and fabric where lower heat impact is useful.

Use caution with

  • Unknown plastics, which may melt, discolor, or release hazardous fumes.
  • PVC, vinyl, and chlorine-containing materials.
  • Highly reflective bare metals.
  • Glass with coatings, bubbles, internal stress, or inconsistent composition.
  • Food-contact items unless material safety, cleaning, and regulatory requirements are understood.
  • Thick cutting jobs, where a CO2 system may be a more appropriate tool.

ComMarker markets access to more than 1,500 materials, but that is a marketing claim rather than an independently validated materials database. Material testing remains essential.

Can the Omni X cut?

ComMarker publishes maximum cutting claims for multiple-pass work, including:

  • basswood: 8 mm for 6 W and 12 mm for 12 W;
  • acrylic: 6 mm for 6 W and 10 mm for 12 W; and
  • stainless steel: 0.6 mm for 6 W and 1 mm for 12 W.

These are manufacturer-rated maximums, not normal-production recommendations. The Omni X’s strongest justification is precision UV marking and specialty-material processing. A CO2 laser is generally the more natural choice for thick wood, acrylic, and broad nonmetal cutting, while a fiber or MOPA fiber laser is usually better suited to deep metal engraving and metal color work.

6 W versus 12 W

Version Published work area Best fit
6 W 150 × 150 mm; 150 × 400 mm with slide extension Small products, jewelry, electronics, fine-detail work, and lower-volume personalization
12 W 250 × 250 mm; 250 × 400 mm with slide extension Larger products, longer sessions, higher throughput, and more demanding cutting

Choose the 6 W model when your products are small and detail matters more than cutting capacity or field size. Choose 12 W when the 250 × 250 mm area, longer production sessions, or additional cutting capability directly supports your orders. Do not buy the higher-power model merely for theoretical headroom; internal engraving performance must be assessed separately from surface marking and cutting.

Safety, ventilation, and installation

ComMarker markets the Omni X as a Class 1 enclosed system and lists OD 5+ laser-light proofing, a cover or door sensor, safety key, temperature detection, overheat protection, and an integrated laser protection shield. Verify the certification documentation for the exact model and region.

Class 1 enclosure status addresses accessible laser radiation under specified conditions. It does not mean the process is risk-free. Smoke, dust, odors, fire, electrical hazards, and material-specific emissions still require control. The enclosure is not a substitute for suitable extraction or ventilation.

ComMarker’s safety guidance recommends a dry, ventilated environment from 10°C to 28°C with humidity no higher than 70%, and instructs users to ground the machine and follow applicable local and national rules. Read the manufacturer’s safety guidance before installation.

Fiber, MOPA, CO2, and diode lasers

A ComMarker B6 or B6 MOPA is more naturally aligned with deep metal engraving and metal color marking. A CO2 laser is generally better for thick wood, acrylic, fabric, and broad nonmetal cutting. A diode laser can be a better-value choice for occasional wood, leather, paper, and coated-material work. None is a direct equivalent to a UV system for internal transparent-material engraving.

Where the Omni X fits—and where it does not

Buy it when: internal crystal or glass engraving is a meaningful product line; you need enclosed UV processing for delicate or specialty materials; autofocus and a larger desktop work envelope matter; and the UV capability can generate enough business to justify a $3,599-plus system.

Choose 6 W when: your products are small, detail-focused, and lower volume, particularly jewelry, small plaques, electronics, ornaments, or small crystal pieces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose 12 W when: you need the larger field, expect longer sessions, or have enough batch volume to justify the additional cost and capacity.

Look elsewhere when: your priority is deep bare-metal engraving, thick cutting, the lowest-cost craft machine, large-format production, or a completely plug-and-play 3D crystal workflow requiring no calibration or software learning.

Verdict

The ComMarker Omni X is a credible specialty UV engraver, not a universal laser. Its best buying case is the combination of enclosed operation, fine UV marking, autofocus, multiple lens options, and genuine support for internal glass or crystal engraving. That combination can be valuable for awards, gifts, jewelry, electronics, and delicate personalized products.

Its weaknesses are equally important: the headline speed and precision figures are not independent production measurements; suitable glass and crystal require testing; software feature parity is not fully documented; accessories can materially increase the system cost; and the machine is a poor substitute for a fiber laser’s deep metal work or a CO2 laser’s thick nonmetal cutting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Omni X is worth the price when UV-specific work creates the value. If subsurface crystal engraving or delicate multi-material personalization is central to your business, it deserves serious consideration. If your work is mainly wood, thick acrylic, or deep metal, spend the budget on the laser category designed for those jobs instead.
