A combo snow gun is an internal-mix snowmaker: compressed air and pressurized water meet inside the gun, then leave through separate nucleation and bulk-water nozzles. The nucleation spray seeds the larger water spray with ice crystals; whether those droplets freeze depends on nozzle matching, equipment compatibility, and the local wet-bulb temperature—not simply whether the air is below 32°F.
How a combo snow gun makes snow
In the DIY combo design described by Steven Lemos in Make’s snowmaking project, air and water mix inside the gun. Different nozzle types then create two sprays with different jobs:
- Nucleation nozzles break water into fine particles that form an “ice mist” of nuclei.
- Bulk-water nozzles produce the larger spray. As its droplets cross the nucleated mist, they can freeze into ice crystals.
This is one design, not a description of every snow gun. Snow State also describes its combo plan as an internal-mix snowmaker in its Free Home Snowmaker Plans.
Why matching the nozzles matters
The nucleation spray needs to cover the bulk spray. If it does not, the outer part of the bulk spray may reach the ground as water rather than snow. Lemos puts it this way: “The trick to matching your bulk nozzles to your nucleation nozzles is that the nucleation spray must engulf the bulk spray, or else the bulk spray will have wet edges (spraying non-snow, just water).”

A nucleation spray that is much wider than necessary can also waste efficiency. Nozzle selection therefore depends on the sprays’ flow and pattern as well as the compressor and pressure washer feeding them. Snow State says its combo plan includes a nozzle guide; it also notes that suitable nozzles may not be available at a local hardware store.

- Matched spray nozzles and compatible pipe fittings
- A pressure washer and high-pressure water connection
- An air compressor and air connection
- A check valve between the compressor and gun
- A pressure gauge and an adjustable ball valve
The check valve helps prevent water from backing into and flooding the compressor. The exact parts and their ratings depend on the particular design; the source does not establish a universally compatible finished gun or current model recommendations.
Use historical figures as design examples, not shopping specifications
Lemos’s 2012 article gives example operating figures: 40–70 psi air pressure; a compressor capable of 6 cfm at 40 psi; and a pressure washer supplying about 2 gallons per minute at 450 psi. These describe that project, not a universal specification or current manufacturer guidance. Before choosing equipment, confirm its output at the intended operating pressure and check every component’s current rating.

The same article reports running its brass gun at 450–700 psi and warns that higher pressure wears the nozzles, pipe, and pump; exceeding component ratings is at the user’s risk. Those are old, design-specific figures, not current engineering advice. The assembled system must be rated for its actual operating pressure, including its pipe, fittings, hoses, valves, and gauge.
What conditions let it make snow?
Snowmaking depends on wet-bulb temperature, which accounts for humidity as well as air temperature. A dry-bulb reading alone does not establish whether a particular setup will make snow. Lemos’s article gives historical examples of 27°F at 95% humidity and 39°F at 10% humidity. Treat these as examples from that project, not guarantees for every location or snow gun.

Elevation can give droplets more time to freeze before reaching the ground, according to the project. Wind direction matters too: Lemos cautions against firing into the wind because it can contribute to freeze-ups.

Lemos reports an estimate of 2–5 inches per hour at 2 gallons per minute. That is the project author’s figure, not an independently tested or guaranteed output. The article says production varies with water flow and with air and water pressure, so results from one setup should not be assumed for another.

Operating cautions
Follow the manuals and ratings for the equipment in your build. The Make project also gives these specific cautions:
- Close the nucleation ball valve before starting water flow to help prevent water from reaching the compressor.
- Check that the pressure washer contains no ice before turning it on.
- Do not leave water in an exposed hose where it can freeze and split the hose.
- Wear warm clothing and waterproof gloves, and account for loud compressor noise.
Combo versus external-mix snow guns
Snow State’s plan page distinguishes internal-mix combo guns from external-mix designs, in which air and water meet outside the body for nucleation. Its vendor-authored description identifies easier clearing of nozzle clogs as a potential external-mix advantage, while noting possible air-nozzle freeze-up and a need for a heating element in low-flow situations. This is a general description, not a controlled comparison proving that one design performs better in all conditions.
For either design, evaluate the actual compatibility of the nozzles, air supply, water supply, pressure-rated components, and local wet-bulb conditions. The cited sources do not establish current stock, universal compatibility, or independent performance tests.
