The pigment is mixed through the concrete instead of sitting in a separate surface film, so ordinary wear cannot strip color from only the top layer. For an existing slab, a properly prepared stain followed by its compatible sealer is usually the practical long-lived retrofit. A coating can add a stronger stain, abrasion, or chemical barrier, but it remains a surface layer whose performance depends on adhesion, moisture control, ultraviolet exposure, traffic, and maintenance.
There is no defensible universal figure such as “integral color lasts X years and stain lasts Y years.” The concrete itself may serve for decades, while the decorative finish can fade, wear, peel, flake, or require renewal much sooner or later depending on the site and installation.

What “colored concrete,” stain, and coating actually mean
These terms describe different construction methods, not interchangeable products. The right comparison starts with whether the concrete is being placed now or already exists.
Integral color in a new pour
Integral color is a mineral-oxide pigment added to the mixer and thoroughly blended before placement. In the one-course method described by the American Cement Association (ACA) and Portland Cement Association, the color runs through the full depth of the placed slab. It is not a paint film that can delaminate from the surface.

Pigments should be insoluble in water, free of soluble salts and acids, resistant to ultraviolet light, alkalis, and weak acids, and compliant with ASTM C979. The final shade still depends on cement type, aggregate, water content, curing, finishing, and jobsite consistency. A crack, spall, scaled area, repair, or heavily abraded surface can expose a different-looking layer even though pigment remains in the concrete.
Stain on an existing or new slab
Stain changes or deposits color at the surface. Reactive stains can create translucent, mottled variation because they interact with the cementitious surface; penetrating or color-enhancing stains can leave the texture visible while adding color. ACA guidance identifies paints and stains as options for existing slabs and, in some cases, new construction. Stains are the better fit when variation is part of the desired appearance rather than a defect.
As one documented example, Rust-Oleum describes its Concrete Saver Concrete Stain as a chemically reactive product for overlays, profiled concrete, and exterior concrete. The manufacturer says its binder anchors the color and that the result will not peel or flake, while protecting against ultraviolet radiation, water intrusion, aggressive chemicals, abrasion, and corrosion. Those are product claims that depend on the specified preparation and application; they are not a guarantee for every stain in every climate.

Coating or pigmented sealer
A coating is a film or a pigmented surface layer applied after the concrete has hardened. Film-forming acrylic cure-and-seal products are described by Sika as UV-resistant films that protect against dirt, staining, de-icing salts, gas and oil, abrasion, and weathering. Other products use penetrating silane or siloxane chemistry to limit water and chemical absorption without forming the same type of continuous film.
Some “coatings” are breathable penetrating sealers rather than thick films. Rust-Oleum describes a penetrating, color-enhancing sealer intended to protect against water, salt, chemicals, stains, freeze-thaw damage, spalling, and pitting and to make cleaning easier. Read the technical data sheet to determine whether a product forms a film, penetrates, or combines both approaches; the failure risks are different.

Which system lasts longer? Compare the failure you can live with
Longevity is not just the date when color changes. Compare where the color resides, how the finish fails, what the slab is exposed to, and how readily the area can be repaired.
| Criterion | Integral mineral-oxide color | Stain | Coating or pigmented sealer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best construction stage | Fresh concrete; one-course, two-course, or dry-shake methods are new-construction approaches. | Existing sound concrete, overlays, and some new slabs after the surface is ready. | Usually an existing slab or cured new slab that can accept a surface treatment. |
| Where color resides | Distributed through the slab’s concrete matrix. | At or near the surface, with reactive or penetrating interaction depending on product. | In a surface film or near-surface sealer layer. |
| Typical appearance | Consistent base color when batching and finishing are controlled. | Translucent, variegated, or mottled color; texture and substrate variation remain visible. | More uniform coverage is possible, including pigmented finishes that mask some variation. |
| Primary visible failure | Wear, scaling, spalling, cracking, or repairs change the exposed appearance. | Color variation, fading, surface wear, or sealer wear; the concrete itself can still deteriorate. | Fading, abrasion, peeling, flaking, bubbling, or delamination if the film loses adhesion or moisture pressure develops. |
| Barrier performance | Color alone is not a waterproofing or chemical barrier. | Depends on the stain and the compatible sealer specified with it. | Can provide a stronger stain, abrasion, salt, or chemical barrier, especially with a suitable film-forming product. |
| Dependence on surface preparation | Requires correct mix design, pigment dosage, placement, curing, and finishing. | Requires a clean, profiled, absorbent, compatible surface and controlled application. | Requires moisture, vapor, adhesion, cleanliness, profile, and compatibility checks. |
| Repair character | Localized repairs may not match the original batch and finish. | Can often be re-stained or resealed, but patched areas may accept color differently. | Can be recoated when compatible, but failed adhesion or trapped moisture may require removal and extensive preparation. |
For a new driveway, patio, or slab where the question is “which color method is least dependent on a separate film?”, integral pigment has the advantage. For a sound existing slab, preparation quality and product compatibility matter more than the word “stain” or “coating” on the label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy integral color is usually the durable choice for a new slab
Color is not a peelable layer
Because pigment is mixed through the concrete, normal surface abrasion does not remove a discrete colored membrane. A coating can lose adhesion at its weakest interface; integral color has no color-to-concrete interface to delaminate. That is the central reason it generally wins a new-pour durability comparison.
Placement still controls the result
Integral color is not self-correcting. Keep the mix, water addition, placement sequence, finishing method, and curing procedure consistent. Changes in water content or finishing can produce shade differences, and poor curing can alter both color and surface strength. Protect the slab from premature drying, contamination, and uncontrolled traffic as specified for the mix.
Damage to the concrete remains visible
Color through the depth does not prevent cracking, scaling, spalling, abrasion, or chemical attack. A repaired section can look different because the replacement concrete has a different cement, aggregate, moisture history, or pigment dosage. Integral color reduces one failure mode—loss of a surface color film—but it does not make the substrate indestructible.

How stained concrete ages outdoors
Preparation determines penetration and adhesion
Remove curing compounds, grease, dirt, laitance, old sealers, and other contaminants that block the stain. Profiling or mechanical preparation may be required so the product can enter or react with the cement paste. A slab that looks clean can still be too dense, contaminated, or unevenly porous for consistent color.

Variation is a feature and a maintenance issue
Reactive stains reveal differences in cement paste, aggregate exposure, trowel marks, repairs, and porosity. Test the actual slab and keep a control sample before committing to the whole area. Expecting a uniform paint-like field from a reactive stain is a specification error, not a product failure.
Use the specified sealer
Stain is commonly only one part of the system. Westcoat’s acid-stain specification, for example, requires project-specific preparation, cure times, protection, and owner cleaning and maintenance instructions to preserve the system warranty. Follow the exact stain and sealer compatibility requirements rather than substituting a convenient topcoat.
Will a concrete coating peel?
It can. Peeling, flaking, blistering, and delamination are surface-system failures generally associated with inadequate preparation, weak or contaminated concrete, incompatible products, excessive moisture or vapor movement, trapped contaminants, or conditions outside the product’s limits. A coating that performs well on a dry, properly profiled slab may fail on a damp slab or over an old sealer.
Film-forming systems
Film-forming acrylics and similar coatings can provide a continuous barrier against dirt, stains, de-icing salts, oil or gas, abrasion, and weathering. They can also produce a more uniform color than a reactive stain. Their trade-off is a visible, continuous layer: once adhesion is lost, failure can spread or show sharply at the edges of the affected area.

Penetrating sealers
Silane and siloxane products limit water and chemical absorption without creating the same surface film. A breathable penetrating color-enhancing sealer can reduce water, salt, chemical, stain, freeze-thaw, spalling, and pitting damage while making cleaning easier. Because it does not behave like a thick paint film, its appearance and failure mode differ from a film-forming coating.
Checks before coating
- Confirm the slab is within the product’s moisture and vapor limits; do not assume a dry-looking surface is dry enough.
- Identify curing compounds, sealers, oils, efflorescence, weak paste, and other contaminants.
- Verify the required mechanical profile and adhesion procedure.
- Check temperature, humidity, rain, dew, ultraviolet exposure, and cure windows for the installation day.
- Confirm that the primer, color coat, and topcoat are a tested or manufacturer-approved combination.
Choosing by project type
New driveway
Specify a properly proportioned integral mineral-oxide pigment meeting ASTM C979, then place, finish, cure, and protect the concrete according to the mix and project specification. Plan for de-icing salts, tire abrasion, oil, freeze-thaw cycles, and runoff. A compatible sealer may still be useful for stain and salt resistance; integral color does not replace that protection.
New patio or walkway
Integral color is appropriate when you want a consistent base color and do not want the color’s survival to depend on a separate film. If a mottled decorative effect is more important than uniformity, a stain or other surface treatment can be selected after the concrete has reached the required condition, provided the surface is suitable.
Existing sound slab where texture should remain visible
Use a compatible reactive or penetrating stain after cleaning and profiling. Apply the manufacturer’s compatible sealer, observe cure and protection periods, and give the owner the cleaning instructions. Test patches are essential because the final color follows the slab’s porosity and history.
Existing slab needing uniform coverage or a stronger barrier
Consider a coating or pigmented sealer only after moisture, adhesion, vapor, and substrate checks. A film-forming system can hide more variation and provide a stronger barrier, but it has a more consequential adhesion failure mode and normally requires a defined recoating and maintenance plan.

Exterior exposures that shorten finish life
Specify for the actual exposure rather than for the product category alone.
- Ultraviolet light: Sun can alter color and degrade some binders. Use a product documented for the exposure and follow its recoat limits.
- Freeze-thaw and de-icing salts: Water entering pores and repeated freezing can contribute to scaling, spalling, and pitting. Salt-contaminated surfaces need cleaning and a compatible protective system.
- Traffic and abrasion: Driveways, garage entries, commercial walks, and loading areas wear faster than lightly used patios.
- Water and vapor movement: Moisture can carry salts, reduce adhesion, or create pressure beneath a film. This is a substrate condition, not something a decorative color can solve.
- Chemicals and oils: Automotive fluids, cleaners, fertilizers, and industrial chemicals require a compatible resistance rating.
- Cleaning chemistry: Strong solvents, acids, or abrasive methods can attack a sealer or change the appearance even when the concrete remains sound.
Should you seal stained concrete?
Usually, yes—when the stain manufacturer specifies a sealer for the system. Sealing helps control water, salt, chemical, stain, and abrasion exposure and can make routine cleaning easier. The sealer also determines gloss, color enhancement, slip characteristics, and part of the maintenance schedule.
Do not treat “sealed” as a permanent condition. Clean with the recommended products, avoid incompatible chemicals, observe traffic restrictions during cure, and inspect for wear in high-use paths. If the sealer is neglected or attacked by incompatible cleaners, its protective performance can decline even though the stain remains visible.

Installation sequence for a durable finish
For integral color
- Choose a mineral-oxide pigment that meets ASTM C979 and confirm the intended color with a physical sample.
- Set the mix proportions, pigment dosage, water control, aggregate, placement sequence, and finishing method before the pour.
- Batch and mix thoroughly so pigment is distributed consistently through the concrete.
- Place, finish, cure, and protect the slab according to the project specification; do not add uncontrolled water at the surface.
- Apply any compatible protective sealer only after the concrete and product conditions meet the specified requirements.
- Provide the owner with cleaning, salt, chemical, and traffic guidance appropriate to the exposure.
For stain and sealer on an existing slab
- Inspect for cracks, weak concrete, moisture, vapor movement, old sealers, curing compounds, oil, and contamination.
- Repair defects and remove contaminants using the methods permitted by the stain and sealer manufacturer.
- Profile and clean the surface so it has the required absorbency and texture.
- Apply a test area, document the color and variation, and obtain approval before full application.
- Apply the stain at the specified coverage, dwell, neutralization or cleanup conditions, and cure time.
- Apply only the compatible sealer, at the specified number of coats and coverage rate.
- Protect the surface from rain, traffic, dust, and chemicals until the system has cured.
- Give the owner the product-specific cleaning and resealing instructions.
For a coating
- Measure or otherwise verify moisture and vapor conditions required by the technical data sheet.
- Remove incompatible coatings and contaminants and create the specified mechanical profile.
- Repair weak, cracked, or deteriorated concrete before coating.
- Confirm primer, color coat, and topcoat compatibility and environmental limits.
- Install each layer at its specified thickness, recoat window, and cure condition.
- Prevent water, traffic, chemicals, and abrasion until the full system is ready for service.
- Set an inspection and recoating plan based on traffic and exposure rather than waiting for widespread peeling.
Maintenance, repair, and life-cycle decisions
Maintenance burden
Integral color has no decorative film to renew, but the concrete still benefits from cleaning, prompt removal of oil and salts, crack management, and protection against scaling. Stained and coated systems add inspection of the sealer or film, cleaning with compatible chemistry, and periodic renewal when specified.
Repairability
A stain can often be refreshed or resealed, but a patch may accept color differently from the surrounding slab. A coating can sometimes be recoated without removing everything, provided the existing layer is sound and compatible. If moisture or adhesion failure is the cause, recoating over it merely hides the problem temporarily; removal and substrate correction may be necessary.
Cost without false precision
No reliable installed-price or universal replacement interval is established for all three methods because labor, access, substrate condition, product system, climate, and traffic vary. Compare the complete life-cycle scope: surface preparation, repairs, primer, stain or pigment, sealer, protection during cure, cleaning, inspections, resealing, and possible removal of failed films. A lower initial price is not lower cost if inadequate preparation causes an early failure.
What the concrete’s service life does—and does not—tell you
The American Cement Association reported an average 30–50 year service life for concrete pavements in 2026. That statistic describes the pavement substrate, not a promise that a decorative stain, paint, or sealer will retain its original appearance for 30–50 years. Decorative finishes experience different stresses and may need maintenance or renewal while the slab remains structurally serviceable.
Authoritative and manufacturer information does not establish a controlled, generalizable head-to-head number of years by which integral color outlasts stain or coating. The useful decision is therefore comparative: put color through the slab for a new pour, use a tested stain-and-sealer system for a suitable existing slab, and choose a coating when its barrier and appearance benefits justify the preparation and adhesion risks.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Is the slab new? Favor ASTM C979-compatible integral pigment when a consistent base color and maximum resistance to loss of a surface color layer are priorities.
- Is the slab existing and sound? A compatible stain plus sealer is usually the least disruptive way to add color while retaining visible texture.
- Do you need uniform coverage or higher chemical and abrasion resistance? Evaluate a coating or pigmented sealer, but complete moisture, vapor, adhesion, and profile checks first.
- Do you want mottled variation? A reactive stain is more suitable than a uniform paint-like coating.
- Will the surface see sun, salts, freeze-thaw, traffic, or chemicals? Select the system and maintenance plan for those exposures and follow the exact technical data sheet.
- Is a contractor promising a fixed number of years? Ask which product, preparation, climate, traffic level, maintenance schedule, and warranty conditions support that number; do not transfer one brand’s interval to another system.
