Colfax’s first center-running bus lanes began operating on September 27, 2026, between Broadway and Colorado Boulevard. Routes 15 and 15L started using them, but this was an early phase—not the completed East Colfax BRT system. The full project is planned to span 8.5 miles to I-225, with full BRT service expected after construction ends at the end of 2027.
That distinction matters when describing what changed: new bus lanes and station platforms were in service on one segment, while the larger corridor remained under construction. Any account of walking, driving or riding the route should specify its segment and date, and separate firsthand observations from the project’s published plans and local reporting.

What opened on Colfax—and what did not
RTD said Routes 15 and 15L began using the center-running bus-only lanes from Broadway to Colorado Boulevard on September 27, 2026. The Denver Gazette reported that this first section opened with dedicated bus lanes and station platforms in the center of the road. The buses were existing routes using new infrastructure; the opening was not the launch of the complete planned BRT service. (RTD update; The Denver Gazette)
The distinction is easy to miss when the change is described simply as “Colfax BRT.” RTD describes the larger East Colfax project as an 8.5-mile corridor between Broadway and I-225. The initial bus-lane operation covered only Broadway to Colorado Boulevard. RTD said full BRT service would begin after construction was complete, expected at the end of 2027. These are the agency’s stated plans and timeline, not a guarantee that the schedule cannot change. (RTD project update)

What a walk, drive and bus ride can—and cannot—show
Looking at the same stretch in different ways can reveal different parts of the change: a walk lets you assess station access and crossings, a drive shows how the new lane arrangement works for other traffic, and a bus ride shows the route from the passenger’s perspective. But an observation is not a corridor-wide performance result. The available opening coverage does not establish before-and-after travel times, ridership, safety outcomes or business revenue. Avoid treating a single trip, or the opening of one segment, as proof of those outcomes.
On foot
The new stations were reported to have elevated platforms, security cameras, an emergency phone and interior bike racks. Those features describe what was reported at opening; they do not by themselves establish how comfortable, accessible or secure a station feels in use. To make a firsthand account useful, identify the station or segment and visit date, and describe observed details such as the approach to the platform, crossing conditions and access to nearby storefronts. Axios also reported that nearly 200 new trees were planned. That is a reported plan, not a verified count of trees planted or surviving. (Axios Denver)

The road now includes a center-running bus-only segment from Broadway to Colorado Boulevard. A driver’s account should stay specific about where and when it was made, and distinguish what was directly observed—such as a turn, crossing or interaction with a bus—from assumptions about how the design affects congestion or safety overall. The sources available for the opening do not supply a before-and-after traffic-time comparison.

On the bus
Routes 15 and 15L were the services using the new lanes at the September 2026 opening. A ride on either route can document conditions on the segment traveled, but it should not be described as the eventual full BRT service. The rest of the project corridor and planned service remained unfinished at that point.

Denver’s project expectations document said business access would be maintained and that RTD would maintain Routes 15 and 15L and their stops during construction. Those were published commitments; they do not prove that every business had uninterrupted access or that every rider experienced unchanged service. (City and County of Denver project expectations)

As the first segment opened, Axios Denver reported that storefronts had endured nearly two years of upheaval. David Bentley, general manager of Argonaut Wine & Liquor and a Colfax Business Improvement District board member, said businesses had “showed real resilience.” The construction commitment and the reported experience are different kinds of evidence: one states what the project said should happen, while the other describes the strain reported by businesses. How to report the change without overstating it
- Name the segment: distinguish Broadway-to-Colorado Boulevard, where the first lanes opened, from the full Broadway-to-I-225 project.
- Date the observation: operating conditions and project status can change as construction continues.
- Separate observation from outcome: describe what happened on your trip, but do not infer systemwide travel-time, safety or business effects without comparable data.
- Keep plans distinct from completed work: the nearly 200 trees were reported as planned, not confirmed as planted.
