Both cold frames and row covers can extend the vegetable-growing season, but they suit different gardens and routines. A cold frame is a rigid, hinged-roof shelter you can open and close; row cover is breathable fabric that lies over plants or spans a crop row. Neither is a universal winner: choose by the area and crop you need to protect, expected cold, available light, and how readily you can vent or remove the cover.
How cold frames and row covers work
Cold frames
A cold frame creates a defined protected space with side walls and a hinged glass or plastic roof. The roof can be opened on warm days and closed on cool nights. Oregon State University Extension recommends a southern exposure to maximize sunlight in its Central Oregon vegetable-growing guide. Its rigid, enclosed shape is useful when you want a sheltered bed that can be managed by opening and closing the top.

Row covers
Floating row cover is breathable spun-polyester fabric, available in different thicknesses. It can be placed directly over plants or supported above a row, making it a flexible way to protect a crop without building a rigid enclosure. OSU Extension says these covers can raise air temperature by up to 6°F depending on thickness in its Central Oregon guide; that is a source-specific figure, not a guaranteed result in every garden.

Protection, light, and cold limits
Row-cover weight trades greater cold protection for less light transmission. OSU Extension gives the following figures in its guide to winter vegetable production west of the Cascades:
#1 Best Overall
- [Extend the Growing Season]: Protect emerging seedlings from chilly spring or fall temperatures with the cold frame greenhouse, allowing you to prolong the growing season. Hence, you can enjoy increased harvests and healthier plants as you extend crop rotation well beyond traditional limits.
- [Premium Light Protection]: Featuring crystal-clear panels, the mini hot house delivers excellent insulation for sensitive sprouts. It blocks excessive sunlight, letting in ample rays for robust growth while keeping your garden protected.
- [Adjustable Roof for Effortless Access]: The easily adjustable roof hold securely by sturdy bolts, which grants hassle-free access to your plants for regular care and maintenance. The versatile design also promotes optimal airflow and sunlight exposures.
- [Natural Fir Construction]: With solid fir wood, the greenhouse combines eco-friendly durability with attractive grain, offering excellent stability and natural charm. Its warp-resistant build provides reliable, long-term support to your garden and stands out as an elegant addition to your outdoor space.
- [Wide Range of Application]: Weighing just 6.5 lbs, the 37” x 25” x 16”(L x W x H) portable greenhouse is easy to move to any indoor and outdoor spots, whether it’s your balcony, patio, yard, porch, or even a sun room.
| Row-cover type | Weight | Protection | Light transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium-weight | 0.50–0.55 ounces per square yard | Up to 4°F | 85% |
| Heavyweight | 0.90–2.0 ounces per square yard | 4–8°F | 30%–50% |
These are OSU Extension material figures, not a promise that a specific crop will remain unharmed at a particular outdoor temperature. Thicker fabric provides more temperature protection but transmits less light. For either method, the crop, its variety, local weather, and how the protection is installed affect the outcome.
OSU Extension says frost cloth can protect down to 26°F for light frosts, not deep freezes, in its tomato and tomatillo guide. Do not treat fabric as a substitute for protection against severe cold. A floating cover can also stick to a crop if freezing temperatures follow precipitation, as OSU notes in its PDF guide to winter vegetable production west of the Cascades.
Rank #2
- [Extend the Growing Season]: The protective covering of the wood garden greenhouse will tender plants from late-season chills and keep unwanted guests at bay. Hence, it will ensure an extended cultivation time and robust, healthy plant development.
- [Customizable Roof Ventilation]: Designed with dual easy-to-adjust roof vents, the cold frame greenhouse lets you fine-tune ventilation and adjust the humidity for your plants. Additionally, you can effortlessly open or close the top to reach inside for pruning, watering, and harvesting tasks.
- [Fir Wood Craftsmanship]: Made from high-quality natural fir, the portable raised flower planter protection showcases remarkable strength and stable shape retention. A water-based finish further enhances its service life, all while preserving the attractive, original wood texture.
- [Superior Light Management]: Featuring transparent panels, the compact greenhouse provides effective insulation and softly diffused light, making it perfect for nurturing young sprouts and encouraging lush, mature plant growth.

Despite its compact footprint, it provides ample room for cultivating an array of vegetables, flowers, or fruits.
Which option fits your garden?
| Consideration | Cold frame | Row cover |
|---|---|---|
| Shape and area | A rigid, defined sheltered space with side walls and a hinged roof. | Flexible fabric that can cover plants or a crop row. |
| Daily management | Open the hinged roof on warm days and close it on cool nights. | Secure, vent, or remove the fabric as conditions and crop needs require. |
| Cold-performance evidence | OSU sources reviewed do not give an equivalent numeric cold-frame performance figure. | OSU reports protection figures by fabric weight; actual results are not guaranteed. |
| Light trade-off | Depends on the roof material and setup; the cited sources do not provide a comparable transmission figure. | OSU reports 85% light transmission for medium-weight and 30%–50% for heavyweight fabric. |
Pick a cold frame if you want a fixed sheltered bed with a roof you can open and close. Consider row cover if flexible fabric better fits the crop row or changing layout, and select its weight with the light-versus-protection trade-off in mind. A head-to-head trial or comparative cost analysis is not available in the cited OSU guidance, so the evidence does not establish one method as generally warmer, cheaper, or more effective.
Manage ventilation and choose crops carefully
Protection can become a heat problem when the weather turns sunny and warm. OSU Extension’s educator’s guide to vegetable gardening advises removing row covers, cloches, or similar protection when temperatures warm to 85°F. Treat that as source-specific guidance rather than a universal cutoff: crop and setup conditions matter. For cold frames, the hinged roof allows you to open the enclosure as warmth builds.

Crop hardiness matters as much as the structure. OSU Extension’s 2025 winter-vegetable guidance describes semi-hardy crops as tolerating light frost at 28–32°F, but that category is not a guarantee for every variety or growing condition. The same article quotes Jim Myers, Baggett-Frazier Endowed Chair of Vegetable Breeding and Genetics in Oregon State University’s Department of Horticulture: “Winter gardening is a risky business,” as general winter-crop advice rather than a conclusion about either covering method. For local planting choices, consult OSU’s 2025 guide to cold-hardy vegetables for a spring harvest and its Central Oregon climate guide; recommendations developed for Central Oregon or west of the Cascades should not automatically be applied elsewhere.
