Ball State’s official planning language puts “STUDENTS FIRST” and “THE CARDINAL EXPERIENCE” at the center of its campus vision, while its housing rules restrict entry to construction areas to workers and other authorized people. Those statements show how the university frames planning and site access; they do not establish that every project has been assessed against student outcomes or that disruption is eliminated. The Architecture Building renovation is one documented example of work taking place alongside campus life.
What “students first” means in Ball State’s campus planning
Ball State’s 2021 Campus Plan Update uses “STUDENTS FIRST” and “THE CARDINAL EXPERIENCE” as planning concepts. They describe the university’s stated priorities for campus planning, but the plan language alone does not demonstrate how each construction project is evaluated or what effects it has on students.

That distinction matters: a student-centered planning principle is not the same as a project-specific promise about access, noise, schedule, or learning. The available university sources offer examples of planning language, site-access expectations, and construction-related learning, but not a comprehensive policy or campus-wide measurement of student impact. How students and guests are expected to handle construction areas
Ball State’s housing policy says construction sites are limited to workers and other authorized personnel. Students and guests are expected to follow construction information and zoning rather than enter work areas. This establishes an access rule, not a complete account of pedestrian detours, accessible routes, or project-by-project arrangements. The Architecture Building renovation: modernizing systems while retaining character
A Ball State Magazine report published September 30, 2026, describes a renovation of the Architecture Building. The work includes replacing the south-facing glass façade and upgrading mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, with the stated aim of preserving the building’s architectural character. The university reported that completion was expected by the start of Spring 2027; that is a forward-looking target, not a guaranteed date. Read the renovation report.
The project also connects campus construction to Ball State’s construction-management graduates. F.A. Wilhelm Construction was hired for the work. Alumni Melisa Magallanes serves as a project engineer, and Dylan Roach is the project manager. Roach described the balance between preserving the building and updating its systems: “We’re maintaining the building’s existing feel while modernizing what’s behind the scenes.”

Construction-related learning is different from access to a jobsite
Ball State program stories describe students designing furniture and sensory objects for a children’s therapy facility, as well as taking part in construction-themed outreach. These activities connect design and construction education with practical projects and community engagement. They should not be confused with permission to enter restricted campus construction sites or evidence that students take part in the Architecture Building renovation. The university sources document a student-first planning vocabulary, construction-site access expectations, a specific building renovation, and construction-related educational activities. They do not quantify how construction affects Ball State students overall or establish campus-wide figures for disruption, noise, satisfaction, or access impacts. A separate report on students’ third-place finishes in residential and commercial categories at the 2026 New Builders Competition records an event result, not a measure of student experience.
