That price described the company’s planned Kickstarter offer in January 2024. Coast Runner now lists the compact desktop CNC mill at $3,000 paid in full or a $300 deposit, with its next shipping cycle listed as Q4 2026. Buyers should also confirm tooling, software, shipping, warranty, refund, and state-eligibility details before paying.
What happened to the $2,400 price?
The $2,400 figure came from Coast Runner’s CES 2024 launch pitch. On January 12, 2024, TechCrunch reported that the company planned to launch the CR-1 on Kickstarter the following month at approximately $2,400, with an expected retail price near $3,000.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That was an intended crowdfunding price, not a permanent retail price. Coast Runner’s current official CR-1 page lists the machine at $3,000, or allows customers to reserve one with a $300 deposit. It does not present $2,400 as the current full-purchase price.

The CR-1 moved beyond its original announcement, but its route to market was disrupted. In a December 2024 federal complaint, Coast Runner said Kickstarter terminated its campaign and that an Indiegogo campaign was also terminated on March 1, 2024. Those details are allegations made by Coast Runner in its lawsuit, not independent findings that should be treated as settled fact.

CR-1 specifications
| Specification | Listed detail |
|---|---|
| Machine type | Compact three-axis desktop CNC mill |
| Work envelope | 89 × 242 × 79 mm, approximately 3.5 × 9.5 × 3.1 inches |
| Overall dimensions | 270 × 425 × 380 mm, approximately 10.6 × 16.7 × 15 inches |
| Weight | 42 lb, or approximately 19 kg |
| Spindle | 1,500–8,000 rpm, according to the MAKE review |
| Probe | Built-in conductive probe; MAKE also described self-calibration |
| Software | Coast Runner’s CRWrite software, with CAM Assist integration promoted by the company |
| Claimed materials | Aluminum, brass, steel, stainless steel, tool steel, titanium and plastics |
The work envelope is the most important specification for many buyers. This is a small-part prototyping machine, not a substitute for a full-size vertical machining center or a general-purpose shop mill. A part must fit inside a volume only about 9.5 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 3.1 inches tall before workholding and tool-access considerations.
What can the CR-1 realistically make?
Coast Runner positions the machine for small metal parts, prototypes, fixtures, brackets, educational projects, one-off components and small-batch work. The company has also claimed that it can machine difficult materials including titanium.
That claim should be read as a material-capability claim, not a promise of equal performance across every metal. Practical results depend on cutter choice, feeds and speeds, depth of cut, rigidity, workholding, cooling or chip management and operator experience. A machine that can cut titanium is not automatically an economical titanium-production machine, and the available evidence does not establish production rates, surface finish, tool life or repeatability for every material.
Coast Runner also uses language around industrial precision and thousandth-inch accuracy. Those are manufacturer claims unless supported by independent measurements. They should not be treated as verified production specifications.
Beginner-friendly software, but not beginner-free machining
Coast Runner’s main differentiation is intended to be the complete experience rather than the hardware alone. CRWrite is designed to simplify running premade and custom G-code, while the company has promoted guided operation, educational content, community files and a design-and-milling bounty-board concept.

That may lower the software barrier, but CNC milling remains substantially more demanding than 3D printing. The operator must secure the stock, select suitable tools, create or verify toolpaths, set work and tool offsets, probe correctly and understand how the cutter will move through the actual material. Incorrect assumptions can break a tool, damage the workpiece or crash the machine.
Coast Runner’s operator manual explicitly treats fixturing, probing, machine rigidity, cutting tools, toolpath creation and G-code as core CNC fundamentals. Chips, sharp tools, noise and metal dust also require an appropriate workspace and safety controls.
What does the CR-1 really cost?
The current headline price is $3,000, but that is not necessarily the complete cost of ownership.
| Item | Displayed price or status |
|---|---|
| CR-1 deposit | $300 |
| CR-1 paid in full | $3,000 |
| Aluminum Clamp Starter Kit | $159 |
| CloudNC CAM Assist license | $499 |
| 5/32-inch end mill | $23.99 |
| Several listed ER11 collets | Approximately $34.99–$37.99 |
These accessory prices were displayed in Coast Runner’s indexed pages and may change. The machine may also require or benefit from additional cutters, collets, workholding, stock material, software, shipping, taxes, safety equipment and chip-containment equipment.
The MAKE review described a $2,500 Kickstarter price that excluded tooling and extra material. That is a useful warning: the launch price was never the same thing as a ready-to-machine setup.
Before ordering, ask Coast Runner to confirm exactly what the selected package includes: enclosure or chip shield, spindle and controller, collets, cutting tools, workholding, probe, software access, power requirements, starter stock, shipping, warranty and technical support. The company’s product page indicates that buyers may be contacted to finalize details such as material packages, so the final configuration may differ from the headline listing.

Availability and the $300 deposit
Coast Runner currently lists the next shipping cycle as Q4 2026. Prospective buyers should treat that as an estimate and ask for the specific delivery terms attached to their order.
The available product information confirms the $300 deposit but does not establish a complete refund policy. Before paying, get written answers to these questions:
- Is the deposit refundable, and under what conditions?
- Is it credited against the $3,000 purchase price?
- What happens if the Q4 2026 shipping estimate slips?
- Are shipping, taxes and configuration charges extra?
- What happens if the buyer cannot legally receive the machine in their state?
- What warranty applies to reservation units?
- What happens if the company cannot deliver?
California sales restriction
Coast Runner’s contact page says the CNC mill is currently unavailable for sale in California. That should be treated as the company’s current sales policy, not as general legal advice. Availability can change, and buyers should confirm eligibility directly before placing a deposit.
The company has also faced litigation involving allegations about the machine’s relationship to firearm manufacturing. Coast Runner’s federal complaint describes its disputes with Kickstarter and Indiegogo, but allegations in that filing do not establish a final legal conclusion. The company’s sales restriction, any court rulings and the broader legal controversy should be considered separate questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “open source” means for the CR-1
Coast Runner’s license page says its design files and models are released under CC0 1.0, permitting copying, modification, distribution and commercial use.
That does not mean every part of the CR-1 is under one open-source license. Incorporated hardware and software may have separate terms, including the GPL license associated with Grbl. Open design files also do not guarantee that every component will be easy to manufacture, repair or replace, nor do they replace the company’s warranty, support or software ecosystem.

How it compares with alternatives
The CR-1’s appeal is its combination of a very small footprint, relatively low weight, claimed hard-metal capability and guided software. Alternatives make different trade-offs:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Makera Carvera or Carvera Air: A more automation-oriented desktop CNC ecosystem; current model availability and pricing should be checked directly.
- Bantam Tools Desktop CNC Milling Machine: A maker- and education-oriented option with an established workflow; verify current stock and pricing.
- Tormach 440: A more conventional benchtop CNC platform for buyers who prioritize machine-shop capability over a minimal footprint.
- Langmuir Systems MR-1: A heavier-duty, less desktop-oriented option for larger or more demanding work.
- CNC-converted benchtop mill: Potentially attractive to technically capable users, but it shifts much of the mechanical, electrical, software and troubleshooting work onto the buyer.
When comparing any of these machines, look beyond the advertised price. Compare work envelope, rigidity, spindle performance, tool-change method, software and post-processor compatibility, support, availability, noise, chips, coolant requirements and the full cost of tooling and workholding. Historical 2024 coverage placed the Makera Carvera around $6,000 and Bantam Tools machines around $7,000, but those figures should not be treated as current prices.
Who should consider the CR-1?
The CR-1 could make sense for a hobby machinist, educator, maker or small prototyping operation that values a compact machine and is willing to wait for a future shipping cycle. It is potentially useful for small aluminum and steel parts, fixtures, brackets and learning subtractive manufacturing.
It is a poor fit for anyone who needs immediate delivery, regularly machines large parts, expects automatic tool changes, wants turnkey production, requires a mature industrial service network or assumes the $3,000 price includes everything needed to start cutting metal.
The company’s design-file licensing may also appeal to technically confident owners who value modification and experimentation. But open design files do not eliminate the practical importance of support, replacement parts, warranty coverage and software access.

Bottom line
Coast Runner’s CR-1 is not currently a $2,400 CNC mill available for immediate purchase. The $2,400 number belonged to the planned 2024 Kickstarter launch, while the current official offer is $3,000 paid in full or a $300 deposit, with the next shipping cycle listed for Q4 2026.
The machine remains interesting as a compact, metal-capable desktop mill with guided software and a small footprint. Its limited work envelope, future delivery estimate, extra ownership costs, manual machining demands, California restriction and unresolved deposit details mean buyers should verify the complete order terms before committing.
