Use cutter-maker data and CAM guidance as conditional starting points—not as universal settings—and adjust only when the cut and machine support the change.
What “feeds and speeds” means on a CNC router
Feed rate is how fast the cutter travels through the work, usually expressed in distance per minute. Spindle speed is how fast it rotates, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Chip load is the amount of material removed by each cutting edge in one revolution.
For a cutter with multiple flutes, a basic relationship is:
Feed rate = chip load × number of flutes × spindle RPM

This formula connects the variables; it does not supply a safe setting by itself. The inputs must use compatible units. For example, if chip load is given in inches per tooth and the result is wanted in inches per minute, the flute count and RPM are multiplied to produce that feed-rate unit. A different unit system requires chip load and feed rate in matching metric units.
CNCCookbook explains this relationship and provides feeds-and-speeds calculator information at its CNC router bits guide. A calculator can help apply the formula, but its result is only as applicable as the inputs and recommendations behind it.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
How to choose a useful starting point
- Identify the exact cutter. Check its geometry, diameter, flute count and maker’s recommended operating information. Start with the cutter manufacturer’s guidance for that tool rather than treating a generic router-bit chart as interchangeable.
- Match the recommendation to the material and operation. Roughing and finishing can call for different engagement and cut-depth choices. Confirm that the source applies to the material and cut you intend to make.
- Check what your machine can control. A lightweight hobby router and a rigid industrial machine are not equivalent. Consider machine rigidity and the spindle’s available speed control before using a recommendation developed for different equipment; CNCCookbook notes this distinction in its guidance at its CNC router bits guide.
- Set feed, RPM and toolpath as a connected choice. Use the cutter maker’s figures and the CAM software’s engagement and cut-depth guidance. Do not raise feed simply because a particular toolpath is described as high-speed machining.
- Evaluate the cut and adjust cautiously. A chart is a starting point, not a guarantee against cutter breakage. If the cut produces chatter or rapid wear, review the whole setup—including tool deflection, engagement and machine rigidity—rather than changing RPM alone.
Why router-bit charts are not universal
A table’s RPM or feed recommendation applies in context: cutter design, material, machine, operation and the assumptions of the table all matter. CNCCookbook says router guidance may give an RPM or a range and may include chip-load detail; it also cautions that using a chart does not guarantee against tool breakage. See CNCCookbook’s router-bit guidance.
Carbide 3D’s 2023 table states, “Feeds & Speeds tables always refer to speed in rpm (revolutions per minute).” That document is a specific reference, not a universal prescription for every router or cutter: Carbide 3D feeds and speeds.

For manual speed control, an RPM number does not automatically correspond to the same dial position on every router. Carbide 3D’s table gives this model-specific mapping for the Makita RT0701C:
| Makita RT0701C dial | RPM listed by Carbide 3D |
|---|---|
| 1 | 10,000 |
| 2 | 12,000 |
| 3 | 17,000 |
| 4 | 22,000 |
| 5 | 27,000 |
| 6 | 30,000 |
These values are the table’s mapping for that router model; do not apply them to other routers. Check the current documentation for your machine and cutter.

How cutter geometry changes the choice
Router bits differ in how their cutting edges engage the material and where they direct chips. The sources discuss straight-flute, downcut and compression cutters; they do not establish one geometry as best for every material or cut. Compare the maker’s guidance for the exact cutter and the intended operation before choosing.
- Straight-flute: A distinct geometry to assess against the job and manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Downcut: Another geometry with different cutting-edge orientation; suitability depends on the material and cut.
- Compression: A separate cutter style that should likewise be matched to the operation and maker’s guidance.
Flute count also matters because each flute contributes to chip formation. With otherwise equal inputs, changing the number of flutes changes the feed rate implied by the chip-load formula. Do not transfer a feed recommendation from a cutter with a different flute count without checking whether the underlying assumptions still fit.

How toolpaths affect cutter engagement
A toolpath determines how the cutter moves through the stock, which changes how it engages material. Roughing and finishing are different roles, so their engagement and cut-depth choices should be guided by the CAM software and the cutter maker rather than assumed to share one setting.
Adaptive clearing and trochoidal milling
Adaptive clearing and trochoidal milling are high-speed machining approaches discussed in connection with feeds and speeds. Their names do not make an aggressive feed safe by themselves. Follow the CAM software’s recommended engagement and cut-depth parameters for the specific strategy, then confirm that the cutter and machine are suitable.
When a cut chatters or a cutter wears quickly
Feed and spindle speed are important, but they are not the only causes to examine. Tool deflection can contribute to wear and chatter. Review cutter suitability, engagement, toolpath, machine rigidity and the guidance used to select the settings; CNCCookbook discusses tool deflection and its relationship to wear and chatter at its tool-deflection guide.
A feed-and-speed chart cannot replace a full setup check or guarantee that a tool will not break. The sources used here do not establish comprehensive safety or dust-management instructions, so consult appropriate authoritative guidance for those requirements before operating a CNC router.
