For CNC-routed cabinet panels, choose joinery by the geometry you can machine, the thickness and material of your stock, and how the carcass will be assembled or serviced. A blind dado uses a short edge tenon in a matching face mortise; a full dado is a groove that receives an extended mating panel; a butt joint simply brings an edge against a face and needs a mechanical fastener. Surface-machined connectors such as Lamello Cabineo offer another workflow, including options designed to avoid edge drilling.
How the three basic panel joints differ
The Cabinet Joinery manual from eCabinet Systems describes these cabinet-joint terms and identifies blind dados as suitable for CNC-router machining. The manual is an older terminology and construction reference, not a current toolpath or tolerance specification.
Butt joint
One panel edge meets the face of another panel. The geometry is straightforward, but the joint needs a mechanical fastener such as screws or nails; the manual does not describe it as a self-registering connection.
Blind dado
A short tenon is machined on the edge of one panel, and a matching mortise is cut into the mating panel’s face. The manual calls the result “both strong and easy to assemble.” That is the manual’s characterization, not the result of a controlled comparison with other joints, materials, or machine setups. Full dado
A groove runs across the full edge and length of the receiving panel, and the mating panel is lengthened to fit into it. Unlike a blind dado’s short edge feature, this joint uses a groove across the full edge. Confirm the exact geometry and clearance in the current CAM and machine documentation.
When a surface-machined connector fits
A proprietary connector can make sense when the production workflow favors machining connector features on the panel surface rather than drilling into an edge. Lamello describes Cabineo 8 as a surface-machined cabinet connector that requires no edge drilling. Its product page says the short 8 mm screw enables center-panel joints from 16 mm stock and corner connections from 10 mm stock. Lamello presents Cabineo X as a surface-machined connector and shelf support for shelves and cabinets. The manufacturer lists 16 mm as the minimum material thickness for center-wall machining. Before choosing, check whether the furniture must come apart, which faces and edges the CNC can reach, and whether the material and thickness fit the exact joint or connector specification. The cited product pages do not establish a universal strength or ease-of-assembly ranking across these methods.

Keep connector specifications and strength claims product-specific
Lamello’s Cabineo 12 page publishes the following strength values and minimum thicknesses. These are manufacturer specifications for Cabineo 12, not independent test findings and not values for Cabineo 8, Cabineo X, dados, or butt joints. The page does not state a publication year.

Do not use these numbers to rank Cabineo 12 against a dado, or to infer performance of another Cabineo model. A meaningful comparison would need matching test conditions, substrates, joint geometry, and installation.

Plan cutter geometry and CNC operations before production
Connector profiles can require dedicated cutter geometry. Leitz describes cutters for Lamello connector grooves, with options by material and application; its range includes solid-tungsten-carbide and PCD tools, and its Lamello cutter uses compression geometry for panel machining. These are descriptions of that tool range, not a universal tooling prescription. For any joint, verify the workholding, tool access, fit, and tolerances in the machine and CAM documentation for the specific setup. The Cabinet Joinery manual’s older descriptions can clarify terminology, but should not substitute for current implementation guidance.

A separate example: manual dowel joinery
Festool’s wooden-panel guide illustrates a manual DOMINO dowel method rather than a CNC connector specification. In its example with 19 mm stock and 6 × 40 mm DOMINO dowels, the guide routes a 25 mm-deep hole on the edge and a 15 mm-deep hole on the face.
