Clocks: How They Keep Time and How to Choose One

Clocks keep time by counting regular cycles. Learn how pendulum, quartz and atomic mechanisms work—and why many household “atomic” clocks are radio-controlled quartz models.

A clock keeps time by counting a repeating event. Its timing mechanism produces regular cycles; a counter turns those cycles into seconds, minutes and hours, which a display shows as hands or numerals. The display style does not tell you how the clock measures time.

How does a clock work?

As the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) explains, a clock combines a mechanism that oscillates at a steady beat with a device that counts those beats and displays the time. A pendulum swings, a quartz crystal vibrates, and an atomic clock uses a frequency associated with transitions between atomic energy states. In each case, the clock relies on a recurring event that can be counted.

How common clock mechanisms keep time

Mechanism What repeats How the clock turns it into time
Pendulum The pendulum swings back and forth. Gears count the swings. NIST describes a pendulum adjusted so each half-swing takes one second.
Quartz An electrical circuit makes a cut quartz crystal vibrate. Electronics count the crystal’s cycles and divide them down to advance the seconds display.
Atomic Atoms provide a reference frequency linked to a transition between energy states. Electronics interrogate the atoms and use the resulting frequency as a time reference. This is the basis of precision time standards, not a description of most household clocks sold as “atomic.”

Why a quartz clock counts so many vibrations

In NIST’s example, a quartz crystal vibrates at 32,768 hertz, or 32,768 cycles per second. The circuit divides that frequency by 32,768 to produce one-second ticks. That figure describes NIST’s example, not every quartz clock.

NIST also gives an illustrative calculation: if a 32,768-hertz crystal’s frequency were off by 0.1 hertz, the resulting time error would be about 0.26 seconds per day. This is a conditional example, not a product test or a general accuracy rating for household clocks. A clock’s actual performance depends on its particular mechanism and conditions.

What an atomic clock has to do with the second

The International System of Units defines the second using exactly 9,192,631,770 cycles of radiation associated with a specified transition in cesium-133. NIST explains that this definition was adopted in 1967. It defines the unit of time; it does not mean that every clock, or every device showing the time, contains cesium.

National laboratories operate precision clocks and use measurements from them to maintain time scales. NIST identifies cesium fountain clocks as primary frequency standards that contribute to calibrating UTC and UTC(NIST). The time displayed on a phone or computer can come through a distribution chain linked to atomic clocks without the device measuring an atomic transition itself.

What “atomic” means on a household clock

NIST distinguishes a true atomic clock, which has an atomic oscillator inside, from many consumer products marketed as atomic clocks. Household wall clocks, desk clocks, travel alarms and wristwatches described as atomic are often radio-controlled quartz clocks: a local quartz mechanism keeps time, while a received broadcast signal can correct the display.

Correction depends on successful reception and the clock’s setup. A signal may not reach every location or work equally well in every placement. NIST’s WWVB guidance covers reception troubleshooting; for daylight-saving changes and other model-specific behavior, follow the clock’s manual rather than assuming every model acts alike.

Choosing a clock for home or work

Start with where the clock will go and what you need to see or do. Wall, desk and travel-alarm clocks serve different placements; the right choice depends on visibility, power, alarms and whether automatic time correction is useful.

  • Display: Choose hands or numerals based on viewing distance, legibility and preference. Digital numerals do not, by themselves, make a clock more accurate.
  • Power and upkeep: Quartz clocks need a battery or another electrical supply. Mechanical pendulum clocks use a pendulum and gears; check a specific model’s winding and maintenance requirements before buying.
  • Synchronization: A radio-controlled clock can correct its time when it receives the signal, but reception is not guaranteed in every building or placement.
  • Accuracy claims: Separate the clock’s timekeeping mechanism from any signal-based correction. Look for a product-specific specification and its conditions; the NIST quartz example above is not a universal household-clock guarantee.

There is no reliable way to infer the mechanism from the display alone: analog hands and digital numerals describe how time is shown, not how it is measured.
