Climate-Based Migration in Biodiversity Corridors: 45 Design Tactics Explained

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Climate-based migration in this project means the natural movement of species into areas that become suitable as climate conditions change—not people physically relocating wildlife. Landscape architect Marybeth Campeau’s award-winning North Carolina State University project shows how corridor design can make that movement more possible by diversifying habitat, improving local connections and reducing human-created barriers.

The proposal is a planning and design framework, not a completed restoration program. Its 45 tactics are organized into 12 approaches and illustrated across five land types in North Carolina’s Bladen Lakes landscape. No measured biodiversity outcomes or field implementation results are reported.

What the project is—and what “migration” means here

Design Tactics for Climate-Based Migration in Biodiversity Corridors is a landscape architecture student project by Marybeth Campeau, Associate ASLA, developed at North Carolina State University with faculty advisor Madalyn Baldwin. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) gave it a 2023 Student Honor Award in Analysis & Planning. North Carolina’s ASLA chapter and NC State’s College of Design also identify the author, advisor, study location and award context.

The study area is the Bladen Lakes Area in North Carolina. The ASLA project narrative describes the landscape as approximately 55 miles long and 19 miles wide and identifies it as the largest resilient and connected landscape in North Carolina’s Coastal Plain. That designation is part of the project’s description; the available material does not provide a separate validation of it.

In ordinary conversation, “migration” can suggest a seasonal journey or a managed relocation. In this project it has an ecological meaning: species gradually shift their ranges as temperature, moisture and other habitat conditions change. A corridor is therefore not a transport route built for people. It is a connected set of habitats and movement opportunities through which plants, animals and other organisms may disperse, find refuge and establish populations.

The project asks a practical design question: if climate change alters where suitable conditions occur, which landscapes are most likely to let species move to those places? Its answer is to prioritize areas that can support movement while remaining viable habitat, rather than treating isolated protected sites as sufficient on their own.

Why corridor design matters under a changing climate

Campeau frames the future climate of the Bladen Lakes region as hotter and wetter, with greater pressure from invasive species, pests and wildfire. Those conditions are the project’s contextual framing, not a new projection or a site-monitoring result reported in the award material.

A habitat patch can remain healthy today yet become unsuitable for some species later. If surrounding land is fragmented by roads, intensive development, engineered drainage or other barriers, organisms may be unable to reach a cooler, wetter, drier or otherwise more suitable site. A corridor strategy treats the spaces between protected areas as part of the adaptation problem.

The project’s central conservation claim is that planning should favor landscapes with qualities that make them likely paths for climate-related species movement. In practice, that means looking beyond a single reserve boundary and asking how the whole landscape functions: how varied its habitats are, how closely useful patches are linked, and how much resistance human land use creates.

The three-part design logic

The 45 tactics are organized around three connected objectives. They are useful as a review lens for a proposed project, but the award documentation does not compare them in a controlled trial or establish that one objective is sufficient by itself.

1. Increase landscape diversity

More than one habitat condition can give species options as climate conditions shift. A diverse landscape may include different vegetation structures, wet and dry areas, edge conditions and successional stages. Diversity in this sense is not simply adding ornamental variety; it means maintaining a range of ecological conditions that can serve different species and life stages.

2. Increase local connectedness

Connectedness concerns the distance and quality between habitat patches. Small links, stepping-stone sites and continuous habitat can make movement easier than a landscape of isolated islands. The project applies this idea at both regional and site scales, so a local intervention is considered in relation to the larger network rather than as a stand-alone feature.

3. Decrease human-created resistance

Anthropogenic resistance is the difficulty that roads, buildings, intensive agriculture, hardened shorelines, fences, lighting, pollutants or other human changes can impose on movement. Reducing resistance may involve removing a barrier, changing a management practice or designing a crossing or edge that is safer and more permeable. The source does not claim that every barrier can or should be removed; the appropriate response depends on the land type, species and local management context.

How the project works at two scales

Regional framework

At the landscape scale, the project identifies a resilient-and-connected framework for the Bladen Lakes area. This scale helps decision-makers see where broad habitat continuity, large intact areas and priority links should guide conservation and development decisions.

Site tactics

At the site scale, the framework becomes a set of design examples tailored to actual land conditions. The same regional objective can require a different intervention on a farm, in a developed parcel or in a remnant patch between larger habitats. This regional-to-site sequence is why the project is better understood as a process than as a standard detail or a fixed corridor drawing.

Land type What it represents Questions a design team should ask
Managed Land actively maintained for a defined ecological, forestry or conservation purpose. Can maintenance support more habitat conditions and movement, and can management timing reduce disturbance?
Agricultural Working fields, pasture and associated farm infrastructure. Where can field edges, drainage areas or less-intensive zones provide links without ignoring production needs?
Developed Built areas and the hard surfaces, utilities and circulation systems that accompany them. Which barriers can be softened, crossed or reconfigured while maintaining safety and access?
Interstitial Small or residual spaces between larger parcels or land uses. Can overlooked remnants, rights-of-way or edges function as stepping stones instead of isolated leftovers?
Priority connection parcels Sites whose location makes them especially important for linking larger habitat areas. Should protection, acquisition, restoration or coordinated management receive priority here?

The categories can overlap on a real site. A managed wetland may sit inside an agricultural matrix; an interstitial strip may be publicly owned but bordered by development. Classification should therefore support discussion, not replace site observation and local knowledge.

A practical workflow for applying the framework

  1. Define the movement problem. Identify which climate-related change matters for the planning area and which ecological functions need to remain possible. Do not assume one corridor serves every species.
  2. Map the existing network. Record larger habitat areas, smaller patches, waterways, likely refuges and gaps. Include roads, buildings, intensive land uses and other potential sources of resistance.
  3. Locate priority connections. Look for places where a modest intervention could link otherwise separated areas. Give special attention to narrow gaps and parcels that connect several routes.
  4. Assign land-type lenses. Consider whether each opportunity is managed, agricultural, developed, interstitial or a priority connection parcel. If more than one applies, document the competing objectives.
  5. Choose tactics against the three objectives. For each candidate action, state whether it increases habitat diversity, improves local connectedness, reduces resistance, or combines those functions.
  6. Adapt the design to operations. Set out who will manage vegetation, water, access, lighting, mowing, invasive-species control and safety features. The project stresses joint management; a corridor without an accountable maintenance arrangement is only a concept.
  7. Coordinate across property lines. Engage landowners, agencies, community groups, designers and operators early. A connection that stops at a parcel boundary is not a functioning network.
  8. Monitor and revise. Establish species-appropriate indicators before construction or restoration begins. The award material does not supply a monitoring protocol or outcome data, so each local project must define its own measures and time frame.

How to compare proposed tactics without overstating the evidence

The project does not report a comparative experiment, species-by-species performance study or completed implementation. A fair comparison is therefore a structured design review, not a ranking of proven winners.

Review axis Evidence to seek in a proposal Decision caution
Habitat diversity Different habitat structures or moisture conditions, seasonal resources and refuge opportunities. More types are not automatically better if they are too small, poorly managed or unsuitable for the target species.
Local connectedness Shorter gaps, stepping stones, continuous vegetation or safe crossings between useful patches. Connectivity for one organism may not help another with different scale, behavior or habitat requirements.
Reduced resistance Barrier removal, safer crossings, less disruptive lighting or land-management changes. A reduction in one barrier can create another problem, such as safety risk, invasive spread or maintenance burden.
Land-type fit A tactic that matches the site’s ownership, production, built form and ecological conditions. A tactic copied from another parcel may fail when governance, hydrology or operations differ.
Joint management Named responsibilities, funding, access agreements and an adaptive maintenance plan. Design drawings alone do not establish long-term ecological performance.

What this means for construction and site delivery

For a construction-oriented team, the framework is most useful during feasibility, site planning and coordination—not as a substitute for code compliance, engineering or ecological permitting. Early plans can reserve connection parcels, protect existing habitat during staging and identify where grading, drainage, lighting or fencing would create avoidable resistance.

Construction documents can also make ecological intent buildable by locating limits of disturbance, sequencing work around sensitive periods identified by qualified specialists, specifying soil and vegetation protection, and assigning post-construction maintenance. Those are implementation considerations derived from the project’s emphasis on locally designed and jointly managed tactics; the student project does not prescribe a standard specification or construction detail.

On developed sites, the most valuable move may be coordination with adjacent owners so that a planting strip, wet area or crossing continues beyond the project boundary. On agricultural land, a successful design must respect production and access requirements. On interstitial land, clear ownership and maintenance responsibilities are often as important as the physical intervention.

Conditions for transferring the approach to another place

Campeau presents transferability as conditional. The process must be locally designed, collaborative, responsive and jointly managed. A team working outside the Bladen Lakes landscape should therefore begin with local climate exposure, land ownership, hydrology, target species and existing conservation priorities rather than importing the five categories as a finished plan.

  • Local design: use site surveys and local ecological knowledge to identify what constitutes habitat and resistance in that place.
  • Collaboration: involve landowners, public agencies, conservation organizations, designers, builders and residents whose decisions affect continuity.
  • Responsiveness: allow tactics to change as climate conditions, land use and monitoring results change.
  • Joint management: secure long-term agreements for maintenance, invasive-species control, access and funding.

This approach can inform a regional plan, a campus, a subdivision edge or a restoration project, but the source does not establish that it is a one-size-fits-all blueprint.

Important limits and common misreadings

  • It is not assisted relocation. The project addresses conditions that allow species to move on their own; it does not propose people transporting organisms to new habitats.
  • Connectivity is not a guarantee of survival. A link can fail if food, shelter, climate conditions, disease pressure or population size remain inadequate.
  • There is no universal corridor. Different species move at different speeds, distances and times, and may require conflicting habitat conditions.
  • The tactics are not measured outcomes. The award and project narrative establish a recognized student planning project, not verified biodiversity gains from built work.
  • The regional claim has a defined source. The description of the Bladen Lakes landscape as North Carolina’s largest resilient and connected landscape comes from the ASLA project narrative and is not independently substantiated in the available material.

What the award recognition does—and does not—establish

The 2023 ASLA Student Honor Award in Analysis & Planning recognizes the quality and professional relevance of the student work. The jury described it as “a good look at a model that can be deployed,” and Campeau’s statement says, “Conservation efforts must prioritize areas with qualities that make them the most likely paths for climate-related species movement.” These quotations describe the project’s argument and jury assessment. They are not field-performance claims.

The strongest defensible takeaway is narrower and more useful: corridor planning can be organized around habitat diversity, local connectedness and reduced human resistance, then adapted to specific land types through collaboration and shared management. Any built project still needs local ecological assessment, regulatory review and monitoring to determine whether those design decisions work.
