Clearway Energy Group says it has closed financing and begun construction on 210 megawatts (MW) of battery energy storage at the Honeycomb Energy Center in southern Utah. Announced October 9, 2026, the expansion consists of three facilities in Beaver and Iron counties, supported by long-term contracts with PacifiCorp. Clearway says the batteries are intended to help balance electricity supply and demand on Utah’s grid.
What Clearway is building
The new phase adds 210 MW of battery power capacity across three facilities. The projects are Escalante BESS II LLC, Escalante BESS III LLC, and Granite Mountain BESS West LLC, as identified in a related SEC filing. Clearway names Rosendin as its construction partner and says each new installation will be adjacent to an operating Clearway solar site that is also under contract with PacifiCorp.

MW measures how quickly a system can deliver or absorb power; megawatt-hours (MWh) measure stored energy. Clearway says the completed Honeycomb portfolio will comprise seven systems capable of storing and deploying 2,120 MWh. That portfolio-wide energy figure is not the storage capacity of the three new facilities alone: the announcement does not state their individual or combined MWh capacity, battery chemistry, duration, or commissioning schedule.
How the expansion fits into Honeycomb
The expansion follows four Honeycomb storage sites that Clearway says came online earlier in 2026. With the three additional systems, the company’s stated total becomes seven. Clearway says long-term PacifiCorp contracts support the new capacity, and describes the project’s role as helping balance supply and demand as electricity needs grow. The announcement does not disclose contract duration, dispatch terms, or facility-level operating specifications.

Financing and ownership are separate figures
Clearway describes the energy center as an approximately $400 million project financed through a consortium comprising Key Bank (CLA), US Bank, NordLB, and Co Bank. It also says Clearway Energy, Inc. entered an agreement to invest when the projects reach commercial operations.
A separate SEC filing concerns an ownership purchase, not the full construction cost. It reports that on October 1, 2026, Honeycomb 2 Purchaser LLC, a Clearway Energy, Inc. subsidiary, agreed to acquire interests in Honeycomb 2 TargetCo from a Clearway Energy Group affiliate. TargetCo is to become the indirect owner of the three project companies. The filing sets a base purchase price of approximately $119 million, subject to adjustments, and says the transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2027 if closing conditions are met. It does not say that the purchase has closed or establish that Q4 2027 is the project’s completion date.

Projected jobs and community contributions
Clearway projects at least 150 construction jobs from the three facilities. It also projects $37 million in additional tax revenue during operations, which would bring total tax contributions from the Honeycomb projects to more than $95 million. The company further projects $60,000 in additional annual donations to Utah schools and community organizations, for $100,000 annually across the seven sites. These are company projections, not reported realized results.
What is known about timing
Clearway announced construction had begun on October 9, 2026, but did not provide a construction completion date or commercial-operation date for the new facilities. The SEC filing’s expected Q4 2027 closing refers only to the ownership transaction; it should not be read as a construction milestone.
