The City of Perth’s FOGO service changes collection frequency and bin use for eligible properties: food scraps and garden waste go in a green-lidded bin collected weekly, while general waste and recycling are collected on alternating fortnights. The initial rollout took place in April–May 2026, but it does not cover every City of Perth household. Check your address with the City before changing how you sort or put out bins.

What is changing under the City of Perth FOGO service?

FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics. For properties on the service, the lime-green-lidded bin accepts food scraps as well as garden waste and approved compostable liners. It is collected every week. The red-lidded general-waste bin and yellow-lidded recycling bin are collected on alternating fortnights, so each is collected every two weeks on its scheduled cycle.

The service is not simply a universal reduction in bin size or collection frequency. It changes which materials go in each bin and how often each stream is collected. The City lists a standard 140 L general-waste bin for the FOGO service, but its current guidance does not establish a single before-and-after bin-volume comparison that applies to every household. City of Perth: Give FOGO a go

Which Perth households are included?

The initial FOGO rollout occurred across April–May 2026 for houses and smaller residential buildings with up to five units in East Perth, West Perth, Northbridge, Nedlands and Crawley. Residents should confirm whether their specific property was included; location alone is not enough to assume a service change or collection day.

Property or service status Service described by the City
Eligible houses and multi-unit dwellings with up to five units included in the initial rollout FOGO service: weekly green-lidded organics collection, with red-lidded general waste and yellow-lidded recycling on alternating fortnights.
Multi-unit dwellings with more than five units where garden waste is generated Three-bin Garden Organics service.
Multi-unit dwellings with more than five units where garden waste is not generated Two-bin general-waste and recycling service.

These service distinctions are set out on the City’s waste collection information page. Contact the City if you are unsure which service applies to your building.

What goes in each bin?

Green-lidded FOGO bin

Put food scraps and garden organics in the FOGO bin. The City accepts compostable liners that bear the AS 4736 seedling logo; a generic “compostable” label alone is not the specified test. Check the City’s item-by-item sorting guide for materials not covered by these basics.

Yellow-lidded recycling bin

Use the yellow-lidded bin for accepted recyclable items. Not every item that looks recyclable belongs there, so check the City guide when in doubt rather than putting uncertain materials in the bin.

Red-lidded general-waste bin

Use the red-lidded bin for items that cannot go in either FOGO or recycling. The City’s guide gives current item-specific directions for sorting.

The City’s practical rule is: “If it’s food or garden organics, it belongs here.” See What goes in the FOGO bin? for accepted materials and sorting details.

What should residents do before changing their routine?

  1. Confirm your address is on FOGO. Check the City’s FOGO information page or contact the City. Do not assume your property has transitioned based only on its suburb or building type.
  2. Check your collection calendar. Collection days are address-specific, and the FOGO schedule separates weekly organics collection from alternating fortnightly general-waste and recycling collections.
  3. Sort by material, not by bin size. Put food and garden organics in the green-lidded bin, accepted recyclables in yellow, and items belonging in neither stream in red.
  4. Use the specified liners. Eligible residents receive a kitchen caddy and two rolls of compostable liners. If you need more, choose liners bearing the AS 4736 seedling logo.
  5. Ask about special circumstances. The City advises residents who may need alternative arrangements to contact it. An alternative is not automatic; the City determines eligibility and arrangements.

Why is the City introducing FOGO?

The City says combining food scraps and garden waste produces compost that can enrich soil in parks and gardens, while helping keep organic material out of landfill. This is the program’s stated purpose, not a quantified environmental result for each household. The City says the service is supported by the State Government’s Better Bins Plus programme.
