The City of Canning offers eligible private-property owners $200 a year and one free independent arborist inspection for a significant tree that is approved for its register. The payment is not a grant for pruning or other tree work. To qualify for the incentive, the property must be zoned R2.5 or above, and the tree must meet the City’s size and other eligibility conditions.
What the incentive provides
Under the City’s revised Recognition and Protection of Significant Trees policy, an approved tree on eligible private land can attract an annual $200 payment and one free professional arborist inspection. The inspection is intended to provide an assessment and maintenance recommendations; the City does not cover the cost of carrying out that work. The City’s 8 August 2025 announcement describes the payment and inspection, while its Significant Tree Register page identifies the arborist as independent.
Does a tree qualify?
The City’s published criteria require the tree to be on private property zoned R2.5 or above. It must be alive, not listed on a recognised State or local weed list, and meet at least one of these size thresholds:
- At least 8 metres tall.
- A canopy spread of at least 6 metres.
- A trunk circumference of at least 1.5 metres, measured 1.4 metres above ground.
Meeting these conditions does not automatically trigger payment. The tree must be nominated, assessed against Policy ET545 and approved for inclusion in the Significant Tree Register.

Rural and Rural Residential properties
Trees on Rural and Rural Residential properties can still be nominated for the register, but those properties are excluded from the payment and arborist report. The City says planning requirements in those areas already require tree retention. Check the register page for the City’s current eligibility details.
How to nominate a tree
- Read the City’s FAQ and Important Information for Landowners on the Significant Tree Register page.
- Complete the City’s nomination form. If you are nominating a tree on private land that you do not own, obtain the landowner’s signature.
- The City assesses the nomination under Policy ET545. A recommendation for qualifying trees is presented to Council, whose approval adds the tree to the register and makes it eligible for the incentive.

What register listing means for tree protection
The Significant Tree Register operates under Local Planning Scheme No. 42, providing listed trees with greater planning protection. It is not an unconditional guarantee that a tree can never be removed. Your Local Examiner reported that removing a listed tree requires a development application and that removal may be requested for reasons including poor health, safety concerns or a development proposal, subject to Council approval. Those details are reported by Your Local Examiner on 7 August 2025; consult the City about the rules that apply to a specific property or proposal.
Payment details the City has not specified
The City’s published pages state the annual amount but do not say when payments are made, how long payments continue after listing, whether owners must renew each year, or how payment administration works. Contact the Greening Team for current arrangements rather than assuming these details.

Why the City is offering the incentive
The City says significant trees contribute to urban canopy, biodiversity, shade and community wellbeing. Its register recognises trees for scientific, historical, social, aesthetic and spiritual significance. Your Local Examiner reported that the City’s 2025–26 budget included the annual payment and attributed a forecast of 34 hectares of canopy loss by 2039 to Councillor Ben Kunze; that forecast is the councillor’s reported estimate, not a figure independently verified in the City material cited here.
