The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a $3 million commitment toward construction of the National Juneteenth Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, on October 7, 2026. The planned museum is a 50,000-square-foot project in the city’s Historic Southside, with an opening projected for 2029.
What the $3 million commitment supports
The church said its commitment will support construction of the National Juneteenth Museum. The announcement coincided with a community event honoring civil rights activist Opal Lee on her 100th birthday. The museum is planned for Fort Worth’s Historic Southside.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ announcement also describes a planned genealogy center, powered by FamilySearch, where visitors could discover and preserve family histories. The center is part of the museum plan; no opening date for it has been announced.
Project size, fundraising and schedule
The project figures reported as of October 2026 describe different things: an estimated overall cost, an amount still to raise, a conditional city pledge and the church’s newly announced commitment. They should not be read as proof that all of the money has been received.

The Associated Press reported the planned museum at 50,000 square feet and gave 2029 as its projected opening year. That is a forecast, not a confirmed completion date. Historic Fort Worth reported that the Southside Community Center was demolished on October 7, 2026, clearing the site. Demolition marks site preparation; it does not establish that vertical construction had begun.

The donation announcement is a funding commitment, while the city’s earlier contribution was conditional and the remaining fundraising figure was reported by the museum’s CEO. Those distinctions matter when assessing how much funding is secured. Likewise, clearing the site is a construction milestone, but it is not the same as starting building work or completing the museum.
