Corrosion-resistant service and insulated doors are project-specified commercial rolling doors for water-treatment plants, chemical facilities, coastal sites and other aggressive environments. The service model is identified as ESD10CR (or CESD10CR in Clopay materials); the insulated model is ESD20CR (or CESD20CR). Select between them based on thermal requirements, exposure, opening size, windload, operating frequency and the exact chemical and washdown conditions—not on the corrosion-resistant label alone.
What these doors are
These products are overhead rolling door systems, not interchangeable retail door slabs. A complete installation normally includes the curtain, guides, headplate, shaft, bearings, endlocks or windlocks, operator, controls and project-specific mounting details. Manufacturers provide technical specifications, drawings, submittal assistance, dealer support and quotation channels because the final door is engineered around the opening and site conditions.

Cookson and Cornell identify the service configuration as ESD10CR and the insulated configuration as ESD20CR. Clopay uses the related names CESD10CR and CESD20CR. The model suffixes identify a family; they do not by themselves establish that a particular door is suitable for every chemical, temperature, pressure-wash routine or coastal exposure.
Service versus insulated construction
| Decision point | Service door | Insulated door |
|---|---|---|
| Cookson/Cornell model | ESD10CR | ESD20CR |
| Clopay-related model | CESD10CR | CESD20CR |
| Primary purpose | Corrosion-resistant closure where thermal performance is not the main requirement | Corrosion-resistant closure with an insulated curtain for greater separation between interior and exterior conditions |
| Typical applications | Water-treatment rooms, chemical storage and other harsh areas needing frequent access or basic enclosure | Similar corrosive environments where temperature control, condensation reduction or energy separation also matters |
| Published windload reference | Current pages: 40 PSF static configuration; a July 2025 feature sheet lists up to 50 PSF | Current pages: 40 PSF static configuration; the July 2025 feature sheet lists up to 60 PSF |
| What still must be engineered | Opening dimensions, exposure, operator, mounting, windload and finish | All service-door items plus confirmation of insulation and thermal details for the specified opening |
Choose the service version when the project primarily needs a durable corrosion-resistant barrier and does not require an insulated curtain. Choose the insulated version when the opening separates conditioned and unconditioned spaces, condensation is a concern, or the owner’s energy and temperature-control requirements justify the added construction. The insulated designation is not a substitute for a building-envelope calculation.

Materials and corrosion-protection features
The curtain and guides are offered in 304 stainless steel or a clear anodized finish. 316 stainless steel with a No. 4 finish is also available. The correct choice depends on the actual contaminants and cleaning regime. Stainless grade, finish, fastener material, crevice details and drainage all affect service life; specifying one upgraded component does not make the entire assembly immune to attack.
Cookson lists these corrosion-related components as standard on the applicable configuration:
- Corrosion-resistant fasteners.
- A stainless-steel headplate.
- Zinc-coated bearings.
- A ZRG-coated shaft.
- Stamped stainless-steel endlocks and windlocks.
- A NEMA 4X operator enclosure.
NEMA 4X protection addresses the enclosure’s environmental protection; it does not certify compatibility with every chemical vapor, immersion condition or cleaning agent. Confirm the operator, controls, junction boxes, conduit entries and field hardware as a complete electrical system.
Published size, duty and life figures
| Published figure | Meaning and qualification |
|---|---|
| 15 ft wide by 15 ft high | Maximum stated standard construction on the Cookson product information, checked in 2026; confirm the current submittal for the exact configuration. |
| 20 cycles per day | Published operating allowance for standard construction, not a guarantee that every opening, operator or control package will meet a particular traffic schedule. |
| 50,000 cycles | Stated lifetime figure; treat it as a manufacturer-published design-life reference and verify assumptions in the project documentation. |
| 40 PSF static windload | Shown on current Cookson and Cornell product pages, checked in 2026, for a stated configuration. |
| Up to 50 PSF service / 60 PSF insulated | Shown on a July 2025 Cookson/CornellCookson feature sheet; these values conflict with the current product-page figure and require model-specific confirmation. |
Do not use the size, cycle or life figures as automatic approval for a larger, faster or more frequently used door. The final limit can change with curtain selection, opening geometry, guides, operator, wind exposure and other options.
Resolve the windload discrepancy before ordering
There are two published windload presentations. Current Cookson and Cornell product pages state a 40 PSF static windload configuration. A July 2025 feature sheet states up to 50 PSF for service doors and up to 60 PSF for insulated doors. These figures should not be blended into a single rating or treated as interchangeable.

For permitting and structural design, give the door supplier the project’s governing wind speed, risk category, exposure, building height, opening dimensions and required design pressure. Request the current model-specific specification and manufacturer-approved submittal showing the exact curtain, guides, anchorage and operator. The submittal—not a generic web-page maximum—should control the engineer’s calculation and the approved purchase order.
Where the doors fit—and where the label is not enough
Manufacturers position this family for water-treatment plants, chemical-storage facilities and other harsh corrosive environments. A dated feature sheet also names chemical processing and coastal or marine settings. Those examples establish intended use categories, not universal chemical compatibility.
Before selecting a finish or stainless grade, document:
- The chemicals present, including concentration, temperature and whether exposure is vapor, splash, immersion or aerosol.
- Cleaning and washdown chemicals, pressure and frequency.
- Salt spray, standing water, humidity and drainage conditions.
- Whether dissimilar metals will contact one another.
- Required interior temperature, condensation control and air-pressure separation.
- Expected daily cycles, emergency operation and access-control requirements.
Ask the manufacturer to review that exposure description in writing. A corrosion-resistant specification cannot establish compatibility with an unlisted chemical, concentration or sanitation process.
How to specify the right door
- Define the opening. Record clear width and height, jamb depth, headroom, sill conditions, adjacent equipment and the available side room for guides and operators. Compare those dimensions with the stated 15-by-15-foot standard-construction limit and obtain engineering for anything outside it.
- Choose the thermal configuration. Use ESD10CR/CESD10CR for service construction when insulation is not required. Use ESD20CR/CESD20CR when the opening also needs an insulated curtain. Have the mechanical or envelope designer state the required thermal and condensation performance.
- Describe the exposure. Provide the complete chemical, washdown, humidity, salt and temperature profile. Do not simply write “corrosive environment” on the purchase order.
- Select curtain and guide materials. Evaluate 304 stainless, 316 stainless with No. 4 finish and clear anodized options against the exposure. Verify that fasteners, shafts, bearings, endlocks, windlocks and mounting steel are included in the corrosion review.
- Establish windload. Give the supplier the project design pressure and request the current approved rating. Resolve whether the 40 PSF web-page configuration or a higher documented configuration applies to the exact model.
- Check duty. Compare the expected cycles per day with the published 20-cycle allowance and confirm operator sizing, controls and emergency-release requirements.
- Obtain the submittal. Require a dimensioned drawing, material and finish schedule, operator enclosure rating, anchorage information, windload data, electrical requirements, installation instructions and maintenance requirements.
- Coordinate trades. Align structural supports, electrical power, controls, access control, drainage, ventilation and any fire or life-safety interfaces before fabrication.
Installation and commissioning checks
Installation quality determines whether the specified materials deliver their expected service life. The installer should use the approved drawing rather than field-fitting a standard door.

- Confirm the opening is plumb, square and within the manufacturer’s tolerances before setting guides.
- Use only the fasteners, shims, brackets, sealants and protective treatments identified in the approved submittal.
- Prevent field welding, grinding dust and carbon-steel contamination from contacting stainless components.
- Seal and orient electrical entries so the NEMA 4X enclosure’s protection is not defeated by conduit or cable installation.
- Verify curtain travel, guide engagement, endlock or windlock operation, bottom-bar contact and limit settings without forcing the curtain.
- Test normal opening, closing, stop, obstruction response, emergency release and power-loss behavior.
- Record serial numbers, material grades, finishes, operator settings and commissioning results for the maintenance file.
Maintenance in a corrosive facility
Corrosion resistance reduces risk; it does not eliminate maintenance. Establish an inspection interval based on exposure and traffic, then document findings.
- Rinse and clean deposits using the manufacturer-approved method; avoid cleaners that attack the selected finish or create chloride contamination.
- Inspect curtain joints, guides, endlocks, windlocks, shaft coating, bearings, fasteners and mounting steel for staining, pitting, looseness or galvanic contact.
- Check the operator enclosure, conduit hubs, gaskets and control stations for damaged seals or water entry.
- Look for rubbing, binding, unusual noise, uneven travel or increased closing force before a component fails.
- Replace parts with model-approved materials. Do not assume generic stainless hardware, bearings or fasteners have the required geometry, grade or coating.
- After a chemical spill, abnormal washdown or storm event, inspect immediately rather than waiting for the normal service interval.
How to compare this system with another commercial door
A meaningful comparison uses the same opening, exposure and design criteria for every candidate. Use this checklist instead of comparing product names alone:
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Construction | Is the curtain service or insulated, and what thermal performance is documented? |
| Materials and finish | Are the curtain and guides 304 stainless, 316 stainless with No. 4 finish, clear anodized or another documented material? What are the fasteners, shaft, bearings and endlocks? |
| Opening range | Does the approved configuration fit the clear width, height, headroom and side-room constraints? |
| Duty | What cycles per day, operating speed and stated life apply to the exact operator and curtain? |
| Windload | What static or dynamic pressure is documented for the project opening, and who provides the anchorage design? |
| Environmental protection | What enclosure ratings and corrosion controls cover the operator, controls, conduit and field connections? |
| Documentation | Are current drawings, specifications, installation instructions, parts information and maintenance guidance available before purchase? |
Price, sourcing and project documentation
No published retail price is established for these doors. They are normally purchased through a manufacturer or authorized commercial-door dealer as a project quotation. The quote will depend on the opening, service or insulated configuration, selected materials and finishes, windload requirement, operator and options. That factor list is a practical inference from the configurable system, not a published price schedule.
Request a line-item quotation that identifies the model, dimensions, curtain and guide materials, finish, operator, controls, windload basis, installation scope, freight, lead time, warranty and exclusions. Keep the approved submittal with the contract documents so a later replacement is ordered to the same specification rather than substituted by appearance.

Using “stainless” as the entire specification
Stainless grade and finish must be stated for each exposed component. Ask how shafts, bearings, fasteners, endlocks, windlocks and mounting hardware are protected.

Choosing the higher windload number without proof
The 40 PSF current-page statement and the 2025 sheet’s 50/60 PSF figures are not one universal rating. Require the current model-specific submittal.
Assuming insulated means suitable for every temperature problem
An insulated curtain may help separate conditions, but the project still needs an envelope and condensation review for the actual temperatures, humidity and pressure differential.
Exceeding the published duty or size
A larger opening or more than 20 cycles per day may require a different configuration, operator or door type. Obtain written engineering rather than extrapolating from the standard figures.
Installing generic replacement parts
Geometry, grade, coating and electrical ratings are model-specific. Match replacement parts to the approved model and manufacturer documentation.
Practical decision rule
Start with the exposure and design pressure, then choose the construction. Specify ESD10CR/CESD10CR when corrosion protection and reliable closure are the primary needs. Specify ESD20CR/CESD20CR when those needs are joined by a documented insulation or condensation-control requirement. In either case, finalize the decision only after the supplier confirms materials, dimensions, duty, windload, operator protection and chemical compatibility for the actual project.
