Passenger service on Chennai Metro Phase II’s Corridor 4 began on 12 October 2026, using Alstom Metropolis driverless trainsets, according to Alstom. The milestone applies to Corridor 4—not the full Phase II network. The initial contract covers 36 three-car trains, while a separate 2025 order covers another 32 trains.
What opened, and where?
Alstom announced that revenue passenger service commenced on 12 October 2026 on Corridor 4, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The company describes the route as 26 km long, connecting Poonamallee Bypass with Light House through 28 stations: 18 elevated and 10 underground. This is a Corridor 4 service milestone, not the opening of all Phase II corridors.

Alstom says the initial Corridor 4 contract was awarded in 2023 and valued at €124 million. Its 12 October 2026 announcement reports that all 36 trainsets had been manufactured, but also says the 36th and final set was due for delivery by the end of October 2026. Manufacturing completion and passenger service are reported outcomes; the final delivery date was still a schedule in that announcement. Alstom’s service announcement.

The initial supply consists of 36 three-car Metropolis trainsets, or 108 cars in total. Alstom says the trains were developed at its rolling-stock and digital-solutions engineering centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and manufactured at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh. It describes the fleet as configured for driverless operation up to 80 km/h.

In an earlier project announcement, Alstom described the automation architecture as Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Automatic Train Protection (ATP) for Unattended Train Operation (UTO), Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4). These are supplier descriptions of the system; the cited announcements do not provide independent performance testing. Alstom’s 2024 first-trainset announcement.
Alstom says each initial three-car set can accommodate up to 1,000 passengers. Its listed features include regenerative braking, air conditioning, dedicated areas for women and passengers with disabilities, perch seats, real-time passenger information displays, CCTV and emergency evacuation doors. The company says the exterior front mask draws on Bharatanatyam mudras and that interior platform-screen patterns reference Tamil Nadu kolam art.

How the initial supply differs from the additional order
The 36 trains serving Corridor 4 are not the same contract scope as Alstom’s additional 2025 order for 32 three-car trains, or 96 cars. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) describes 138 three-car trains as planned for Phase II overall, so neither Alstom order alone represents the complete Phase II rolling-stock plan.

The buyer-side CMRL contract release dated 5 June 2025 gives the additional contract price as ₹1,538.35 crore and includes design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, personnel training and 15 years of comprehensive maintenance. Alstom’s supplier announcement dated 5 June 2025 values that order at €135 million and describes Phase II as approximately 119 km across three corridors and inter-corridor sections. Those are separately reported contract values; they are not an exchange-rate comparison. The 119-km figure describes the wider project, while the 26-km figure above is Corridor 4.

Capacity figures also differ between the two contract announcements. Alstom’s 2025 release says the three-car sets in the additional 96-car order can carry approximately 900 passengers; its 2026 Corridor 4 release says up to 1,000 passengers for each initial set. The cited releases do not explain whether the difference reflects configuration or a different reporting basis, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
What the speed figures mean
CMRL’s rolling-stock overview gives Phase II trains a design speed of 90 km/h and an operational speed of 80 km/h. Alstom’s 2024 announcement similarly labels 90 km/h as a safe speed and 80 km/h as the operational speed. These are attributed project specifications; the 90 km/h design or safe figure is not a claim that trains routinely travel at that speed in passenger service.

What is known about the launch—and what is not
Alstom’s managing director for India, Olivier Loison, said in the company’s 12 October 2026 release: “The commencement of passenger service on Chennai Metro Phase II is a proud moment for Alstom and a testament to our enduring partnership with CMRL.” This is the supplier’s executive perspective on the launch.
