A cell-phone charger left plugged into a wall outlet reportedly exploded and started a bedroom fire in Cianorte, northwestern Paraná, on May 14, 2024. No phone was connected when it happened. Two people were inside the home, but no injuries were reported.
What happened in Cianorte
According to the firefighters’ account reported by TNOnline, the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in Cianorte. A charger plugged into an outlet reportedly exploded and ignited materials in a bedroom. The ceiling or lining, bed and part of the furniture were damaged before firefighters controlled the flames.

Residents tried to contain the fire but called the fire department when they could not extinguish it. Two people were in the house, and the report says nobody was hurt. Video coverage from Bom Dia Paraná also identifies Cianorte as the location.

The available report does not describe a phone battery exploding. It says the charger was plugged into the outlet, but no cellphone was attached when the event occurred. “Cellphone exploded” is therefore an inaccurate description of this particular fire.

The charger was reported as the suspected source, not as a conclusively proven technical cause. No public forensic report identified the failure mechanism, manufacturer, certification status or condition of the outlet. The evidence does not establish whether the problem involved an internal short circuit, a defective component, physical damage, a power surge, the household wiring or another fault.
How a charger can ignite nearby materials
A wall adapter converts mains electricity to the lower-voltage power used by a phone. If components fail, insulation breaks down or a cable is damaged, excessive heat or an internal short circuit can occur. Heat can ignite plastic, bedding, upholstery or other combustible material close to the adapter.

The Paraná Fire Department says poor-quality or uncertified chargers and cables may overheat, short-circuit and, in extreme cases, explode. That general warning does not prove that the Cianorte unit was counterfeit or uncertified. A charger found near the point where flames began also does not, by itself, establish a manufacturing defect; investigators must distinguish the fire’s origin from its precise technical cause.

- Frayed, crushed, cracked or heat-discolored cables and plugs.
- Loose outlets, improvised adapters, overloaded power strips or “benjamins.”
- Liquid exposure, dust or damaged insulation.
- Charging on a bed, sofa, pillow or other surface that traps heat and burns easily.
- Products with no identifiable manufacturer, Brazilian certification information, invoice or warranty.

- Choose chargers and cables with the required Anatel approval or certification for the Brazilian market.
- Do not leave a phone charging while you leave the house.
- Keep charging equipment on a firm, open surface—not a bed, sofa or under a pillow.
- Unplug the adapter after use, especially where children or animals can reach or bite the cable.
- Stop using a battery or device that becomes unusually hot or appears swollen.
- When charging in a vehicle, start the engine before connecting the phone to avoid the voltage variation that can occur during startup.
- Avoid overloaded outlets and improvised electrical connections.
A charger may feel warm during normal operation. Treat it as a warning sign if it becomes too hot to touch comfortably, smells of burning, buzzes or crackles, shows melted or discolored plastic, charges intermittently, or fits loosely in the outlet. The adapter and USB cable are separate components: a sound adapter does not make a frayed or poorly made cable safe.
What to do if a charger smokes or catches fire
- Move away and keep other people out of the room.
- If it can be done without approaching flames or live electrical equipment, switch off the circuit at the breaker.
- Do not touch the charger with bare hands and do not throw water on energized electrical equipment.
- Leave the building if smoke or fire is spreading.
- Call 193, Brazil’s fire-emergency number, and give the address, describe the fire or explosion and report any injured person. The number is free, according to Paraná’s public-security service.
- Do not re-enter until authorities declare the property safe.
How to assess or replace a suspect charger
Do not keep using an adapter or cable that is hot, cracked, melted, buzzing, discolored or mechanically loose. Replace it with a unit whose manufacturer and electrical ratings are traceable, whose Brazilian certification can be verified where required, and whose seller provides an invoice and warranty. Confirm that its voltage and current specifications match the phone or other device.

The Paraná Institute of Weights and Measures (IPEM-PR) has documented unsafe chargers and unsuitable conductive materials in seized products. A magnet-based check mentioned in that older enforcement material is only a warning indication, not a certification test or substitute for professional inspection. Dispose of a failed charger through a local electronic-waste collection program rather than putting it back into service.

The Bottom Line
The Cianorte fire involved a charger left plugged into an outlet, not a phone that was actively charging. A charger can become a fire source even without a connected handset, but the available reports do not identify the precise cause. Use certified, undamaged equipment, keep it on a clear surface and call 193 for an electrical fire.
