Chamberlain’s New Garage-Door Technology May Block Some Aftermarket Controllers

Chamberlain’s myQ cloud restriction and newer opener protocols are separate compatibility problems. Here is how to identify the issue and choose an official or local-control solution.

Short answer: Chamberlain has restricted unauthorized third-party access to its myQ cloud platform, and newer Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers may also be incompatible with some local aftermarket controllers. These are separate issues. The evidence does not support saying that every aftermarket device or every new Chamberlain opener is blocked.

Two different compatibility problems

Reports that Chamberlain is blocking aftermarket garage-door controllers combine two changes:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. A cloud-access restriction announced on October 25, 2023. Chamberlain said it blocked unauthorized apps and services from using myQ. The company said these integrations represented 0.2% of myQ users but generated more than half of system traffic, and that authorized partners would remain available. Read Chamberlain’s announcement.
  2. A newer hardware and communication compatibility problem. Users and controller developers commonly refer to newer products as using “Security+ 3.0.” Some report that existing third-party controllers cannot emulate or communicate with these openers. However, Chamberlain’s publicly available material does not establish the exact protocol design, rollout date, encryption method, or universal scope.

The first issue concerns software connecting to myQ through the internet. The second concerns whether a particular controller can communicate with a particular opener. An opener can be affected by one, both, or neither.

What Chamberlain actually blocked

Chamberlain’s 2023 statement targeted unauthorized myQ app and API usage. That is not the same as physically disabling every third-party controller.

2 for LiftMaster Chamberlain Craftsman Garage Door Opener Remote
  • Broad Compatibility: Works on LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman garage door openers manufactured from 1993 to current; Compatible for 3 different frequencies of security rolling code, it’s the easy option for adding an extra remote to multi-car families or for replacing lost or broken remotes
  • Safe & Reliable: It features latest Security+2.0 rolling code technology that significantly reduces radio wave interference and rolling code protects against intruders by generating a new security code every time the remote control is used on your garage door opener
  • Long Distance Remote: CreaCity garage door opener remote works within 120 feet from the garage door opener for “no waiting” roll-in access
  • Multichannel: 3 button design allows control of up to 3 garage door openers or gate operators at once, which eliminating the trouble of carrying multiple remote
  • Comes in a pack of two: We prepared two garage door opener remotes for you so that you can still get "no waiting" roll-in access even if you lose one; You can also give one of the remotes to your family, when you take away the remote from home and your family is going to enter the garage, another remote will give them a hand

It helps to separate four control paths:

  • myQ cloud integrations: apps or services that communicate through a myQ account or API;
  • authorized partners: integrations Chamberlain continues to support, although availability can vary by product, region, account, and partner;
  • local aftermarket hardware: controllers using radio signals, wall-control wiring, a paired remote, relays, or another local interface;
  • official accessories: Chamberlain and LiftMaster remotes, keypads, wall controls, Smart Garage products, and connected openers.

If Home Assistant, Homebridge, or another unofficial app stopped working while the original remote, wall control, and myQ app still work, the likely cause is the cloud-access decision—not necessarily a change to the opener’s radio hardware.

What “Security+ 3.0” means—and what is still uncertain

Chamberlain and LiftMaster have used several generations of control technology, including Security+ and Security+ 2.0. Community reports and developer discussions describe newer openers as using “Security+ 3.0,” but that label should be treated cautiously unless it appears in documentation for the exact product.

The available evidence does not establish that:

  • every 2026 Chamberlain or LiftMaster opener uses the same protocol;
  • all products with a particular learn-button color use identical hardware;
  • every aftermarket controller is incompatible;
  • Chamberlain has published a complete public technical specification for the newer system.

In practice, the opener model and the controller’s supported interface matter more than the brand name alone. A controller that works with one Security+ 2.0 opener may not work with a newer model, while a device designed around a compatible paired remote or wired interface may have different results.

Community discussion about newer protocol compatibility can be found in the Home Assistant community, but user reports are not a substitute for model-specific manufacturer documentation.

Who is most likely to be affected?

Existing owners with older openers

Many older openers may continue to work with their original remotes, wall controls, official myQ accessories, and some aftermarket devices. Compatibility depends on the exact model, manufacture date, safety-sensor arrangement, learn-button behavior, and controller interface.

Chamberlain’s compatibility guidance says most opener brands manufactured after 1993 may be candidates for myQ when they have suitable safety sensors, but it also lists exceptions. Check the official compatibility tool and myQ setup guidance.

Home Assistant and unofficial-integration users

This group was directly exposed to the 2023 cloud restriction. The opener may continue operating normally even though an unofficial integration can no longer sign in, retrieve status, or send commands.

Buyers of newer Chamberlain or LiftMaster openers

A controller that worked with an older opener may fail to pair with a new one. Do not assume that a new opener is more compatible simply because it has Wi-Fi or a myQ label. Verify the exact opener and controller models before installation or purchase.

Owners of other opener brands

A third-party controller may work with Genie, Linear, Overhead Door, or another brand even when it cannot work with a newer Chamberlain or LiftMaster model. Brand-level compatibility claims are not enough.

myQ compatibility is not aftermarket compatibility

An opener listed as compatible with myQ can connect to Chamberlain’s ecosystem. That does not certify compatibility with Home Assistant, ratgdo, Meross, iSmartGate, a generic relay, a Z-Wave or Zigbee module, or a local-only automation system.

The reverse can also be true: a local controller may operate an opener without using myQ at all. Always check whether the controller uses:

  • the myQ cloud;
  • a local wired wall-control interface;
  • a radio signal;
  • a paired spare remote;
  • a dry-contact relay;
  • an independent door-position sensor.

Chamberlain also lists some Security+ 2.0 models as not myQ-compatible. Therefore, “Security+ 2.0 compatible” and “myQ compatible” are related but interchangeable terms. See the company’s official accessory compatibility list.

How to diagnose your opener

1. Record the exact hardware

Photograph or write down the opener model number, brand, approximate age, learn-button color, myQ or Wi-Fi labels, controller model, and included remote. The learn-button color can help with initial identification, but it is not sufficient by itself.

2. Identify which control path failed

  • Does the original handheld remote work?
  • Does the wall control work?
  • Does the myQ app work?
  • Did only Home Assistant or another unofficial app stop working?
  • Does the aftermarket device fail during pairing, after a firmware update, or only when using the cloud?
  • Can it open the door but not report whether the door is closed?

If the original controls work but an unofficial app does not, suspect cloud access. If the remote works but a local controller will not pair, suspect an interface or protocol mismatch. If nothing works, investigate power, wiring, sensors, and the opener itself before assuming a protocol change.

3. Check official and vendor compatibility lists

Use Chamberlain’s compatibility page and myQ setup tool, then check the aftermarket manufacturer’s list by exact opener model. Ask whether the device supports newer models, requires a spare remote, needs wired terminals, reports door position, supports local operation, or depends on a cloud account.

Options that may still work

Use the official myQ route

This is the manufacturer-supported path for users who want phone control, notifications, sharing, official accessories, and supported partner integrations. It requires a compatible opener or Smart Garage product and depends on Chamberlain’s account and cloud services.

Chamberlain’s setup flow directs customers toward a connected opener or a compatible Smart Garage product. Its current product information also directs buyers to professional LiftMaster installation or Chamberlain retail products: connected opener information.

Add an official Smart Garage accessory

Owners of compatible existing openers may be able to use Smart Garage Control, Smart Garage Hub, or another listed accessory instead of replacing the opener. This remains a myQ-based solution, not a way to avoid cloud dependence.

Use a local aftermarket controller

A local controller can be attractive for Home Assistant users who want custom automations and less reliance on cloud services. But compatibility must be confirmed for the exact opener. Pay particular attention to door-position reporting, local operation, installation method, firmware support, and whether the device uses a paired remote or proprietary interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace the opener

Replacement may make sense when the existing unit is unsafe, unreliable, obsolete, or incompatible with both official and aftermarket options. It is the most expensive path and does not guarantee an open ecosystem. A newer Chamberlain opener may introduce the same compatibility concern that prompted the replacement.

Safety warnings

Do not remove or defeat photoelectric safety sensors, short terminals without understanding the opener’s interface, or install logic-board modifications without appropriate technical knowledge. A controller that can command movement but cannot reliably determine door position is unsuitable for many automatic-closing routines.

Use an independent contact sensor where appropriate, but remember that a sensor provides status only; it does not by itself create a safe door-control system. Any automation that closes a garage door should account for obstruction detection, sensor failure, visibility, and occupants or vehicles in the door’s path.

Common mistakes

  • Calling the 2023 API shutdown a new radio protocol: the announcement concerned unauthorized software access to myQ.
  • Claiming all third-party hardware is blocked: the evidence does not support that blanket statement.
  • Assuming every new opener is incompatible: compatibility remains model-specific.
  • Treating “universal” as a guarantee: it may refer only to conventional wall-button terminals, not encrypted or proprietary systems.
  • Assuming Chamberlain’s motive: the company cited traffic and service-abuse concerns. Claims that the change was made to force subscriptions or product purchases are interpretations, not established facts.

Before you buy anything

  1. Identify the opener’s exact model and production details.
  2. Determine whether the failure is cloud, radio, wiring, Wi-Fi, pairing, or sensor-related.
  3. Check Chamberlain’s official compatibility tool.
  4. Check the controller maker’s exact model list.
  5. Confirm how the device operates and reports door position.
  6. Verify that safety sensors and obstruction protection remain intact.
  7. Choose replacement only after comparing official cloud dependence with local-control requirements.

The Bottom Line

Chamberlain clearly restricted unauthorized myQ software integrations in 2023. Newer opener hardware may also be incompatible with some aftermarket controllers, but that issue is separate and its scope is not yet established for every model. Identify the exact opener, determine which control path failed, and verify controller compatibility before buying or replacing equipment.
