There is no single file size, sharpening angle, or depth-gauge setting that fits every chainsaw chain. Identify the chain’s model and markings first, then use its manufacturer’s chart or a gauge made for that chain. The saw brand and bar length alone are not enough to establish the correct sharpening geometry.
Identify the chain before choosing a file
Start with the chain itself. Look for its model or identifying markings, and check the chain manufacturer’s chart or the saw’s owner’s manual. The chain’s pitch is useful, but it may not settle the question: chain families with the same nominal pitch can call for different filing geometry. A general pitch-to-file chart is therefore a starting point, not proof that a file or gauge suits your particular chain.

Do not choose a file by the saw’s make, bar length, or a product listing that says only “fits most chains.” When the chain has been replaced, the replacement chain’s own identification matters. If the markings are unclear, identify the chain before buying tools or filing; otherwise, you risk selecting a round file or guide that does not match the cutters.

Round-file sizes: use the chain maker’s chart
The following diameters are the recommendations in STIHL’s sharpening brochure. They are not a universal cross-brand specification. In particular, the brochure distinguishes Picco chain variants from other chains with a similar pitch designation.

| Chain pitch or family marking | STIHL brochure round-file diameter |
|---|---|
| 1/4-inch pitch | 4.0 mm |
| .325-inch pitch | 4.8 mm |
| 3/8-inch pitch | 5.2 mm |
| .404-inch pitch | 5.5 mm |
| 3/8-inch Picco | 4.0 mm |
| 1/4-inch Picco | 3.2 mm |
Use these figures only when they correspond to the chain covered by the STIHL recommendation. The brochure’s publication year is not established here, so the figures should be checked against the current instructions for the chain being serviced. Husqvarna also publishes a chart tying file diameters to individual chain families; that is another reason not to infer a file size from pitch alone.
How to check a proposed file or kit
- Match the chain model or family, not just the saw or bar.
- Confirm the included round-file diameter against the chain maker’s guidance.
- Check that a filing guide or gauge is intended for that exact chain geometry.
- If you are buying a kit, verify whether it includes the needed depth-gauge guide and flat file as well as the round file.
Some manufacturer kits include a handle, combination guide, two round files, and one flat file, with variants for named chains. The contents and compatibility are product-specific; check the listing rather than assuming that every kit contains the same tools.
Sharpening angle: follow the exact chain specification
The top-plate angle is not a universal setting. Husqvarna’s chain-specific chart gives top-plate recommendations ranging from 15° to 35°, alongside different side-plate and file-down angles for different chain types. Its educational guide gives a 25°–35° filing-angle range for the chains discussed in that guide. That broad range is not a substitute for the exact chain’s specification.

These angles describe different parts of the cutter and should not be treated as interchangeable. When a chart specifies more than one angle, use the named values for the named parts; do not apply a top-plate number to the side plate or assume that a general filing-angle range describes every filing dimension.
A filing gauge helps hold the intended geometry, but only if the gauge itself matches the chain. Husqvarna recommends gauge use to maintain the angle and depth consistently. Experienced operators may file freehand, but that approach depends on maintaining the specified angles and consistent cutters without a guide. A gauge is the more controlled choice when consistency matters or when the operator is still learning the chain’s geometry.
What the depth gauge does
The depth gauge is the projection ahead of a cutter. Its height relative to the cutter tip limits how deeply the cutter enters the wood, so the difference between the two affects the tooth’s bite. It is not a second cutting edge to lower as far as possible: its setting is part of the chain’s designed cutting geometry.

As the cutter is sharpened and its cutting edge is filed back, the depth-gauge relationship changes. The setting therefore needs periodic checking and restoration to the recommendation for that chain. Use the proper chain-specific gauge and follow its instructions; a generic visual estimate does not establish the correct clearance.
Published depth-gauge values are not universal
Husqvarna’s recommendations table shows 0.025 inch (0.65 mm) for many, but not all, of its listed chain rows. It lists 0.030 inch (0.75 mm) for H64/H64S. These are values from that manufacturer’s table, not default settings for every chain. Confirm the exact row for the chain before using either figure.
Husqvarna’s US how-to suggests filing the depth gauges about every third or fifth time the cutters are filed under normal wear. This is an interval recommendation in that how-to, not a fixed rule for every chain or every working condition. Its educational guide also highlights checking the gauges after heavy filing, such as after striking stone or gravel. Check the chain’s instructions and the actual condition of the cutters rather than relying on a count alone.

A controlled filing sequence
Manufacturer instructions give the safest basis for the sequence, because the required file, gauge, and geometry depend on the chain. The steps below combine the setup and filing practices described by STIHL and Husqvarna; the owner’s manual and the instructions for the specific chain and tool take precedence where they differ.
- Confirm the chain and tools. Identify the chain model or markings and verify the round-file diameter, filing gauge, and depth-gauge guide against the chain maker’s guidance.
- Stabilize the work. Secure the saw and bar so they do not move during filing, lock the chain as directed by the saw’s instructions, and wear protective gloves. Maintain suitable chain tension before filing.
- Set the guide to the specified geometry. Fit the chain-compatible filing gauge and align it as its instructions describe. STIHL’s brochure specifies holding the file at 90° to the guide bar; follow the relevant guide and chain instructions rather than transferring that instruction to a different tool setup.
- File the cutters evenly. Husqvarna’s instructions use an even pushing stroke and file every second tooth before turning the saw to work on the other side. STIHL says the file sharpens on the forward stroke and should be lifted off the cutter on the backstroke. Keep the cutters consistent instead of concentrating on one tooth.
- Check the depth gauges when due. Use the gauge matched to the chain and restore the setting only to the chain’s specified level. Do not lower them by eye or by a guessed amount.
- Inspect the result before returning to work. Look for consistency among the cutters and check for damage that calls for replacement rather than further filing. Follow the saw and chain manuals for any additional inspection or operating steps.
Filing too high can blunt a chain; filing too deep can create a hook, which Husqvarna says increases strain and vibration. Even strokes and a correctly matched guide help avoid turning a sharpening job into a change in cutter geometry.
When to file depth gauges—and when to stop
Depth gauges are checked as part of maintaining the cutting geometry, not automatically lowered after every cutter stroke. The interval guidance above offers a practical reference for normal wear, while heavy filing or contact with stone or gravel is a reason to inspect them rather than wait for a routine count. If the chain’s own instructions set a different interval or method, follow those instructions.

Do not continue filing a damaged or excessively worn chain merely to make the cutters look uniform. Husqvarna’s 2019 educational filing guide says to replace a chain if the longest portion of the cutting tooth is worn below 4 mm, or if cracks are present. That threshold belongs to that guide; it should not be represented as a universal limit for every chain design. Check the relevant chain instructions when deciding whether a chain remains serviceable.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by pitch alone: Use the model or family chart as well, because chains with the same nominal pitch can have different filing geometry.
- Using a general angle range as an exact setting: The 25°–35° range in Husqvarna’s educational guide applies to the chains it discusses. Use the exact chain’s chart for its top-plate, side-plate, and file-down angles.
- Fitting a guide that is merely close: A guide can hold the wrong geometry just as consistently as the right geometry. Check chain compatibility before use.
- Filing depth gauges by guesswork: Too much depth-gauge setting increases kickback risk, according to Husqvarna. Use the chain-specific gauge and setting.
- Using uneven strokes or inconsistent cutter lengths: Secure the work and file evenly. Husqvarna’s method works every second tooth before turning the saw to file the opposite side.
- Filing a chain with cracks or excessive wear: Check for damage and apply the chain maker’s replacement criteria instead of continuing to sharpen.
Choosing between freehand filing and a gauge
Freehand filing is an option for an experienced operator who can consistently hold the chain’s prescribed angles and maintain similar cutter lengths. A filing gauge provides a physical reference for the angle and can support more repeatable work. Neither method makes the chain’s specifications optional: the file diameter, angle, and depth-gauge setting still have to match the exact chain.
When comparing tools, prioritize compatibility over a broad “universal” claim. Confirm the named chain types supported, the round-file diameter included, whether a depth-gauge guide and flat file are supplied, and whether the guide supports the chain’s required angle. A tool that fits a different chain family is not made suitable by sharing a pitch marking.

Practical answer at a glance
Identify the chain first; then match the round file, filing angle, and depth-gauge tool to its manufacturer’s specifications. STIHL’s brochure provides useful pitch-based examples, while Husqvarna’s charts show why model-specific checks matter. Treat the chain’s own instructions as decisive, use a compatible gauge to keep the work consistent, and replace a chain when its damage or wear meets the applicable replacement criteria.
