Centre Pompidou Francilien – fabrique de l’art is a new hybrid museum-reserve and cultural venue in Massy, Essonne. Designed principally by PCA-STREAM (Philippe Chiambaretta Architecte), with the project record also crediting PCA / Prellwitz Chilinski Associates, it combines storage, conservation, research and scientific expertise for the Musée national d’art moderne with exhibitions, education, events and public routes through the life of artworks.
The official programme currently points to free discovery weekends in October and November 2026, a first major exhibition planned for March 2027, and full opening in spring 2027. These are published plans and should be checked before travel.

What Centre Pompidou Francilien is
The project is being built in Massy, south of Paris, as both a professional collection facility and a public cultural institution. Centre Pompidou describes the concept as “a hybrid project: a professional site of conservation, research, and technical and scientific expertise, as well as a cultural site, offering the public new ways to access modern art and contemporary creation.”

Its primary operator is Centre Pompidou, whose Musée national d’art moderne collection contains about 150,000 works. The reserve programme also names the Musée national Picasso-Paris as an institutional partner. The scale answers a practical pressure: the collection grows through three acquisition committees each year, while the institution makes more than 6,000 loans annually.

PCA-STREAM, the practice led by Philippe Chiambaretta, is the lead design practice identified for the project. The project record also credits PCA / Prellwitz Chilinski Associates. PCA-STREAM is additionally identified for landscape architecture. Environmental sustainability is credited to ETAMINE and acoustics to Studio FA.
Two architectural faces, one compact building
The controlled-light “vault”
One side is conceived as a sealed, vault-like monolith. Its workshops admit carefully controlled natural light so conservators can work with paintings, sculptures and other collection objects under stable conditions. The robust envelope and limited openings support the environmental control required for long-term storage, examination and restoration.

- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
The park-facing public side
The opposite face opens toward the Parc de la Blanchette and its lake. A café-bookshop terrace, planted steps, timber walkways, exhibition circulation and a belvedere create a route through the building and into the landscape. Lakeside steps and planted outdoor areas are intended to support artistic events as well as everyday public use.
The plan follows the site’s north–south orientation and establishes an ecological corridor linking the park, the lake and the Massy-Opéra district. The wooded boundary is protected. This landscape strategy gives the public side a distinctly suburban, park-based setting rather than the hard urban plaza associated with Centre Pompidou Beaubourg.

How it relates to Centre Pompidou Beaubourg
The Massy project is not a replica of the Paris building. It borrows spatial ideas associated with Beaubourg—a public promenade, a planted stair and an elevated viewing route—but relocates them to a park-and-lake landscape. Beaubourg’s urban piazza becomes a sequence of planted terraces, timber paths and a belvedere overlooking Parc de la Blanchette.
The difference is also operational. Fabrique de l’Art places collection reserves, conservation workshops and scientific expertise at the centre of the institution, then wraps public access around that working infrastructure. Its adaptable grid and compact, materially efficient envelope are designed for long-term collection logistics, while the public side makes those activities legible through exhibitions, workshops and encounters.
Why the project matters for museum construction
Fabrique de l’Art treats a reserve centre as civic infrastructure rather than hidden back-of-house space. Its design has to reconcile stable environmental conditions, heavy collection movement, adaptable workrooms and public safety with an inviting landscape. The “two faces” resolve that tension: a controlled vault for conservation and an open, event-ready edge for visitors.
That combination is significant for a collection with frequent acquisitions and thousands of annual loans. The building’s flexible 9 m grid, thermal-mass façade, timber components, planted surfaces and planned solar generation are not decorative additions; they are part of an operating model intended to keep the facility useful as collections, techniques and public expectations evolve.
“The Centre Pompidou Francilien – fabrique de l’art opens a new chapter in the history of Centre Pompidou, offering a fresh cultural experience in the Île-de-France region!”
