The available evidence is primarily India-focused and describes a sector tendency, not a forecast for every company or country.
What the Q2 cement outlook actually says
The constructive part of the outlook is volume. India-focused commentary points to a recovery after monsoon-related disruption, with sector demand estimates clustered around 7–8%. Equirus Securities estimated FY26 cement-demand growth of 7–8% in its 2025 sector work. A later Tower Talks sector summary, published in 2026, also described Q2 demand growth of 7–8% year over year.

That range should be read as an India-sector indicator. The title does not specify a country, issuer or fiscal-year convention, and the cited material does not establish that the same growth rate applies to markets outside India or to every cement producer.

Monsoon conditions can delay construction, road work and other outdoor projects. When weather disruption eases, deferred work can return to sites and lift dispatches. Infrastructure and public-works activity can provide an additional source of demand, although the cited material does not quantify the contribution from any individual project or government programme.

A 7–8% industry growth rate would still leave outcomes uneven. Regional rainfall, local construction approvals, real-estate launches, freight availability and a company’s distribution footprint can make an individual producer grow faster or slower than the sector.
Why margins remain vulnerable
Input inflation is concentrated in three areas identified by the cited sector summary: gypsum, petcoke and domestic coal. The same 2026 summary put petcoke above US$170 per tonne. Fuel and raw-material costs matter disproportionately because they affect the cost of clinker production, grinding and transport before a tonne of cement reaches a customer.
Higher volumes do not automatically repair profitability. A plant can ship more cement while earning less per tonne if fuel and raw-material inflation rises faster than realised prices. The margin outcome therefore depends on the timing and size of price increases, energy efficiency, the mix of products and the distance cement travels to market.

The potential cost-efficiency offset
Equirus Securities identified a targeted cost-improvement opportunity of Rs.150–200 per tonne in its 2025 analysis. That is an opportunity, not a guaranteed saving: capturing it requires operational changes such as fuel substitution, process efficiency, procurement discipline or logistics improvements. The cited estimate does not say that every producer can achieve the full amount or specify a completion date.
Can cement prices offset coal and petcoke inflation?
There is evidence of attempted pass-through. The Tower Talks summary reported September price increases of roughly Rs.25–30 per bag in South India and Rs.10–12 per bag in other regions. Those increases create room to defend margins, but they do not prove that the full cost increase has been recovered.
Pass-through depends on whether dealers and end users accept the higher price, how long the increase holds, and whether competitors match it. A price move can also differ by state, product grade, customer type and freight zone. If petcoke remains above US$170 per tonne while prices soften after an initial hike, the benefit to operating margin can disappear quickly.

| Factor | What is established | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Demand | India-focused estimates of 7–8% growth for FY26 and Q2 year over year | Whether that rate applies to every region, issuer or fiscal calendar |
| Petcoke | More than US$170 per tonne in the 2026 sector summary | Contract terms, timing of purchases and the amount passed into each company’s cost base |
| Price increases | About Rs.25–30 per bag in South India and Rs.10–12 elsewhere in September | How much of the increase sticks and how customers respond |
| Efficiency | Equirus cited Rs.150–200 per tonne as a targeted improvement opportunity | Actual delivery, investment required and timing by producer |
What company results add to the sector picture
Company examples should not be treated as proof that the whole industry will produce the same result. They show how volume, pricing and cost control can diverge between issuers.
| Issuer and source | Volume or earnings signal | Cost or margin evidence | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| UltraTech Cement; The Economic Times coverage from 2023–2026 | Q2 net profit rose 7.6% year over year to Rs.1,300 crore | Not stated in the cited item | A reported profit increase, but not a sector-wide margin forecast |
| Shree Cement; The Economic Times preview from 2023–2026 coverage | About 10% expected volume growth | Variable cost per tonne expected to decline 6% year over year | An analyst preview with expectations, not a reported result for every producer |
For any issuer, the most useful comparison is not volume alone. Check whether growth exceeds the industry estimate, whether realised price per bag or tonne is rising, how exposed the company is to fuel and raw-material inflation, and whether renewable or alternative energy and logistics efficiency reduce delivered cost. The cited material does not provide a complete, like-for-like data set for those measures across companies, so missing cells should not be filled with assumptions.
Which cement stocks could benefit if infrastructure demand improves?
Producers with strong regional distribution, spare capacity near growing markets and lower energy intensity would generally be better positioned to convert higher dispatches into profit. However, the available figures do not establish a definitive ranking of cement stocks. Investors should separate a sector thesis from an issuer-specific decision and examine the latest filing for:

- Volume growth compared with the 7–8% India-sector reference point.
- Realised price per bag or tonne after discounts and freight.
- Petcoke, coal, gypsum and other raw-material costs per tonne.
- The share of renewable or alternative energy and the efficiency of captive power.
- Rail, coastal and road logistics costs, including lead distance to customers.
- EBITDA or operating-margin movement after price increases.
- Net debt and the capital required to add capacity or improve efficiency.
A producer that grows volume but loses price discipline may underperform one with slower shipments and better cost control. Conversely, a company with temporary cost pressure may recover faster if its price increases hold and its efficiency programme delivers.

- Confirm the geography and quarter. Establish whether the reported Q2 is an Indian fiscal quarter and avoid applying an India estimate to another market.
- Track dispatches and utilisation together. Rising volume with falling utilisation can indicate that capacity additions, rather than underlying demand, are driving growth.
- Compare price and cost per tonne. A headline price increase is useful only if it exceeds the increase in fuel, gypsum, coal, freight and other variable costs.
- Look for evidence that the September hikes held. Check subsequent dealer prices, discounts and regional commentary rather than assuming the announced increase became permanent.
- Test the efficiency claim. Compare actual cost per tonne with the prior period and with the Rs.150–200 per tonne opportunity cited by Equirus; do not count an opportunity as a saving until it appears in results.
- Read company disclosures separately from media previews. The UltraTech and Shree Cement figures cited by The Economic Times have different status: one is a reported Q2 profit result, while the other is an expectation in a preview.
Three possible margin paths
Constructive case
Post-monsoon demand reaches the 7–8% India-sector range, September price increases hold, and fuel inflation moderates or is offset by efficiency. Volumes and margin can then improve together.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Base case
Demand improves, but petcoke, coal and gypsum remain expensive. Producers ship more cement while margins recover only modestly because price increases cover part, not all, of the cost burden.

- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete

Downside case
Weather or construction delays persist, competitive discounting reverses the price increases, and petcoke stays above the cited US$170-per-tonne level. Lower volume would then remove operating leverage just as variable costs rise.
Implications for construction buyers
Contractors and project owners should treat Q2 cement pricing as a live procurement risk rather than rely on a single quotation. Record the quoted grade, bag size, freight terms, validity period and escalation clause. For projects with substantial future pours, staged purchases or a contract mechanism tied to documented input-cost changes can reduce exposure to a sudden regional increase. Those are project-management choices, not a guarantee that prices will rise or fall.
Bottom line
The Q2 setup is cautiously constructive for cement volumes but less reassuring for margins. India-focused evidence points to 7–8% demand growth and some post-monsoon recovery, while petcoke above US$170 per tonne and inflation in gypsum and domestic coal threaten to outpace pricing. The decisive indicators will be whether the September price increases persist, whether each producer delivers measurable cost savings, and whether its volume growth exceeds the industry trend.
